You make it sound like it’s just as easy for the Irish to swanny off into another part of the world as it is for people to mosey onto this island. Whoever said it above that immigrants are the backbone is true to a point, because the government certainly wouldn’t come near it. All too afraid of appearing like they’re racist and afraid of saying no to their overlords in the E.U., to implement a stricter border policy.

It’s weakness like that is trickling down into society and apparently you’ve been suckling on the teet of that same fear. If you’re more concerned about others calling you names than you are about the safety and LIVES of women and children in your home and community, you are a broken individual. Something is not working correctly.

Everything in the public sector that the state collects taxes to pay for comes under the heading “welfare state”. That means the schools, childcare, ECCE, third level education, libraries roads, footpaths, policing, justice system, prisons all public amenities etc. Are you sayin that you want to privatise all of those things? You don’t seem to understand how our system works. We have a neoliberal system (neoliberalism is right wing, that is a fact). According to this doctrine when unemployment reaches 4% (or thereabouts) the banks have to put interest rates up to create unemployment so that wages won’t rise. Low wages rise in a tight labour market and neoliberalism is designed to prevent that happening by ensuring that there are always at least 4% of the population unemployed at all times. It’s called Nairu, the Non Accelerating Inflation Rate of Unemployment and it is the essence of right wing economics. Left wing parties and the union movement actually have full employment policies because they want low paid worker’s wages to rise. Right wing economics will not allow wages to rise because they are afraid of a wage-price inflation spiral. The reason there are people sitting on the dole for long periods has nothing to do with left wing economics. The long term unemployed play a functional role in neoliberalism. If they were to let all the people on the dole go homeless and starve then low paid workers wages would rise because the labour market would be tight. There is no conceivable way you can blame the left for that, NAIRU goes against all left wing economic theory. Neoliberalism is also the reason that the welfare state gets used to supplement employers for the wages they should be paying with HAP and other social transfers. It keeps wages down, it keeps the labour market competitive, employers like it, big corporations like it, the Unions hate it. Attacks on the welfare state typically come from a more extreme brand of neoliberals than the ones we have had here, the ones who hate the administrative state. They theorise that eliminating the welfare state makes it possible for employers to control the worker without the interference of pesky elected officials. At its most extreme they call it the “night watchman state”, human rights would be abolished and all individuals would have rights as articles of property. The state would stripped down to solely ensuring property rights and everything else would be privatised, every inch of land and water. Is that what you want?
