VIDEO: Man jumps to rescue passenger from subway tracks

Holding out for a hero.

BBC / YouTube

A MAN WHO fell onto the subway tracks in Philadelphia got a lucky escape after a fellow passenger jumped to help him.

The video of the incident was released by transport officials.

It shows how other passengers recoiled in shock after the man fell while walking along the edge of the platform.

Within seconds, the Good Samaritan had jumped down to pull him to safety.

Philadelphia CBS said the transport officials described the man as heroic, but warned of the dangers of getting onto the tracks.

It looks to me like the man that fell was walking while looking at his phone and didn’t realise how close to the edge of the platform he was. Some shock for him to get! But also highlights the dangers of walking and looking down while using your phone.

Seems like the man who fell was very disoriented before he fell. At top of screen a wavers out of picture b4 wavering back in again. Then he simply misses his footing.

Wouldn’t be surprised if he was suffering from virtigo or similar at the time.

Thank God he was ok. Bad fall and could have been a LOT worse.

Sometimes it’s important to sacrifice yourself for and make the tough decisions to help others even when other people may think it’s not the right thing to do. Man had a lucky escape.

Kinda hard to know how you’d react when taken by surprise, although it does appear a little odd that so many people just stand around in the seconds after the initial event as they’re trying to get back onto the platform and offer no assistance. I’d like to think most people, if they didn’t go onto the track, would at least offer to help them off it.
Fair play to that lad though, he barely gave it a seconds thought before turning back and jumping down onto the track to help that bloke. That’s brave.

The only other ones that directly witnesses the fall were all women and children.–hardly capable of lifting the man, but one did run for the agents booth to halt service.

Love the way most people just turned and moved back as far away as they could but this guy and one other had the courage and respect for life to help another human being despite placing themselves in imminent mortal danger!

I hope they get free travel for a year at least for their bravery.

I don’t think it’s that simple. The thoughts of on oncoming train would kick in self preservation mode in the vast majority of people which is a natural response. It would be difficult to go against that hardwiring for a stranger, so fair play to the people who do.

Jesus Christ people. He fell 4 feet and if not helped should have been able get up and lift himself onto platform. Why are we celebrating ameaturism. The guy who helped looked afterwards as if he had climbed everest with his large breaths and stretches. Our race are definately regressing.

Might have pushed him to safety! Hardly have pulled him if both of them were at track level.

They should put up barriers to stop people falling onto the tracks.
