The 9 at 9 Nine things you should know this morning…

EVERY MORNING TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you need to know as you start your day.

1. #MORTGAGE RELIEF: The feasibility of offering mortgage relief to struggling homeowners has been played down by the government after a weekend of discussion. Last week, economist Morgan Kelly said that a €6 billion bailout for householders in mortgage arrears could solve most of the country’s current economic problems.

2. #LIBYA: Opposition forces are in control of large parts of Tripoli today, as the battle for the last remaining strongholds of Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi resumes. Overnight, rebels fighting for control of Libya for the last six months moved into the capital, greeted by locals ecstatically welcoming their arrival

3. #SEX WORKERS: An organisation that works with women involved in prostitution has reported an increase in the number of women working in the sex industry – with an increase of 4 per cent on last year, RTÉ reports. Ruhama is also reporting a significant increase in women working in street prostitution.

4. #CAO OFFERS: Thousands of applicants to colleges and further education institutions in Ireland will find out if they got their preferred choice of course this morning with demand for Science and IT courses said to have risen. In total 47,821 applicants are getting a third-level offer today.

5. #ROAD DEATHS: More than 150 children who were killed in road accidents between 1997 and 2009 were not wearing seatbelts or the appropriate car seat at the time, according to a report from the Road Safety Authority.

6. #TURKEY: A man accused of the double-murder of two women from Newry at the Turkish city of Izmat last week is to appear in court today, the Irish Examiner reports. Questions have been raised about whether the suspect, Recep Cetin, is older than 17.

7. #MIDDLE EAST: Israel’s Defence Forces say that southern Israel was attacked overnight, following a Hamas official saying that a truce had been agreed. A ceasefire had been brokered between Israel and militant Palestinian groups in Gaza after a weekend of intense fighting.

8. #NORWAY: A national memorial service is being held in Norway today to mark the one-month anniversary of the attacks by rightwing extremist Anders Behring Breivik, in which 77 people died. Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg urged the country’s citizens to be vigilant about intolerance, saying “together we are an unbreakable chain of care, democracy and safety”, reports the Guardian.

9. #LOVE AND MARRIAGE: Women are more likely to gain weight after being married while men are more likely to pack the pounds following divorce, according to new research to be presented at the American Sociological Association. Lead researcher Dmitry Tumin of Ohio State University said: “Divorces for men and, to some extent, marriages for women promote weight gains that may be large enough to pose a health risk.”

Mad business on the M50, record breaking profits from working peoples daily hardship. Roads already jamm packed but sure, increase freight, no problem, we’ll just whip the ‘early riser’ a bit more… disgusting, nearly as bad as state owned VHi putting it’s prices up… They really make it difficult to like them
