Eircode

We've (finally) been told when Ireland’s new postcodes get delivered

Eircode has been in the pipeline for quite a while now.

EXPECT TO KNOW what your new digits are in about eight weeks time.

The company in charge of the new system say they’ll be posting a unique Eircode to 2.2 million households in the last two weeks of June.

The rollout is a number of months later than scheduled with the original plan hoping to have the codes in place by the Spring of this year.

The delay in rolling out the system was partly due to data protection concerns.

Legislation to go ahead with Eircode was finally agreed by the Department of Communications in February.

Each address in the state, including each flat in a block and each house in a townland, will have its own code. Businesses will also have their own code although a recent survey suggested that business owners weren’t too keen on the plan.

Each code will consist of seven digits – a three-digit ‘routing key’, and 4-digit ‘unique identifier’.

PastedImage-45486 Eircode Eircode

The final four digits will be completely random and the identifiers of two neighbours will bear no relation to each other.

It’s led to criticisms that the random nature of the codes could mean that one incorrect digit could lead to emergency services being sent in the complete wrong direction.

The routing key of neighbouring addresses will be similar with households in Dublin 18, for example, each beginning with D18.

What is the point of clamping a car in a wheelchair spot? Surely this means it obstructs the spot longer. Just tow the ahole away….

I routinely challenge people who do this illegally. I invariably get verbally abused. Excuses range from “I was just in the bank” to “F-off”. The best was the time that I screamed and shouted at by someone who called me all the names under the sun, while 2 shop security guards stood between him and my car in case he tried to damage it. At least 5 people stopped to watch. People are rarely apologetic though. It’s actually a penalty-point offence. People who do it don’t care. I continue challenge them because those in wheelchairs can’t get out of their cars to do so.

That’s like saying we have many motorways because “most of the time” they’re empty too. The point is that they should be free when needed – NOT that someone in need should have to be queue up for one until a lazy **** has vacated it.

I never park in disabled spots. But the above person does have a point. Tesco in celbridge has about 20 disabled spots. At any give time there might
Be one or two people using their spots.
Put in 5 just in case. 20 is overkill. And with credit to shoppers, they are normally always empty

Twenty spaces, out of a total of how many?

Presumably there are at least 2,000 spaces at “Tesco Celbridge Superstore”, since there’s a requirement in Ireland that at least 1% of spaces should be for disabled users.

The actual number is usually dictated by the planning permission granted by the council. In the UK and USA this is 2-4%.

The number of disabled spaces provided at Tesco’s Superstore in Celbridge should not shrink just because the shop is huge, the car park is large, and you resent having to walk across it. I get that you do, but it’s no reason to curtail a disabled person’s access. All the more reason to have extra spaces in fact. If you want their parking space, go home with their disability! Simples.

@ Antanov …….Same at Tesco in Coonagh (Limerick) there are enough disabled spots for all the disabled people in munster, I wonder how the calculated the spaces, perhaps they went to the Social and asked how many people were on Disability!!!!!!. I have been to the Coonagh store many times and only ever saw three disabled stickered cars, there are probably 50 spaces!

@Taxi Bill: Read my comment above on how they’re calculated, and quit your begrudgery. Being disabled is a much greater inconvenience in life than having to walk across a car park at a busy supermarket. How many times have you had to leave a supermarket because there were no spaces? A lot fewer than any of the disabled person has to, I’m quite certain!

Firstly I am a marathon runner. So I don’t resent having to walk across a car park.
Secondly I don’t agree that the tesco car park is huge.
Thirdly, yes they have to set a standard
On how many disabled spaces are available, but using a percentage allocation is a bit silly. Just an easy
Way of doing it for them.
As I said I never use these spaces and anyone that does without the permit should be summonsed. As they we don’t enforce penalty points in this country. At the end of the day there are 20 unused spaces sitting there in tesco celbridge which is just wasteful. I just think some common sense should be applied. That’s all.

    @ohainhirghin;

    1. Of course you don’t agree that the car park is huge at that Tesco; you’re a marathon runner! Now put yourself in the position of someone without the use of their limb(s) and then give that car park a try.

    2. According to the last Census, 11.6% of County Kildare residents reported having a disability – in Celbridge it’s much higher at 36% ! (link below). On that basis, “20″ seems quite reasonable.

    3. Spaces are painted to cater for the busiest times as well as the quiet times. Report back to me at Christmas as to how busy that car park is and as to the occupancy rate of the disabled spaces.

    4. Believe it or not, disabled people don’t exist merely to inconvenience and pub up with stick from marathon running-shoppers like you, so get down off your high horse!

@ winding_down, the guards cannot issue tickets or fines in privately owed carparks eg: tesco carparks, however the owners of the carpark can hire a private clapping company as long as they have adequate and clear signage stating clamping in progress for cars parked in disabled parking spots where no permit is visible.

If the law was changed to include private carparks and on the spot fines imposed you would probably find less lazy morons abusing these allocated spots.

@Molly: I agree with you, and I know about the private parking situation.

Nevertheless, the flagrant abuse of disabled spaces occurs just as much on the street as it does at the supermarket. I noticed it once so routinely abused on a street in Dublin 4 that I called the Council to ask them to re-paint it. When they (quickly) did, but that didn’t stop the abuse, I went to the local Garda Station to register a complaint. I was thanked by a sympathetic Garda and told that foot patrols would pay more attention to these law breakers in the future.

A week later I witnessed a woman emerge from a nearby store with her daughter, both licking ice-creams, to find an irritated Garda issuing a ticket to her windscreen. Why? Because she was illegally parked in that same disabled bay while she shopped for an ice-cream cone. Did she accept this grievance lying down? No, she did not! But good for the Garda. He ignored her protestations and punished her regardless.

Able bodied people who park in disabled spaces are the most frustrating symptom of how ignorant and self obsessed some people are in what’s left of this society. Our latest method of response is to park across the back of the offending no blue sticker car and do what we need to do – it’s fun to arrive back pushing your child’s wheelchair to confront the idiot who is now trapped in the space they should have had the decency to leave for you when you get back from a leisurely shop.

I know of at least 2 such people. One a young fellow who only disability is his obesity which is self inflicted if you ask me. The other is a person who got one 20 years ago when she hurt her back and legs in a car accident but never actually gave it up. When it come up for renewal she always get it. I don’t know how but aparently it’s handy to have as you don’t have to pay for parked. Cases like this pair of chancers undermine the whole creditibility of the genuine cases.

I find that difficult to believe. I used to work in residential care with adults with learning disabilities, many of whom had associated physical disabilities. I had to apply for a disabled parking badge on behalf of one of my clients and we had to jump through hoops to get it (and rightly so).
We needed a letter from the G.P. confirming his disabled status and we had to go to the local Garda station to have him witnessed signing the application and the back of his photos needed for the badge.
Anyway, someone who does manage to get a badge through fraudulent terms does not reduce the disabilities of someone who genuinely needs one.

But if you park in a disabled spot your car should be lifted, simple as but four kids and two buggies is not a disability ! It’s a choice !

Ok, fair enough but I have parked in T1 and T2 at Dublin airport on a number of occasions and when its busy there are always huge numbers of wheelchair spots available on every level of the parking. Just saying?

Thanks for your comment. Just what is there in my comment that makes me “inconsiderate”? I was making a comment on the total number of spaces that appear to be free on a regular basis. I just wonder did you misread my comments as though I parked in a wheelchair, something I have never done. I think that perhaps on the evidence of need, that spaces should be provided. Has anyone ever seen all wheelchair spaces in Dublin airport all taken?

Jayzus Dave do I have to explain it to you?
Just because you can do something and get away with it and there appears to be no immediate victim doesn’t excuse the fact that it’s wrong! You are taking something that isn’t yours simply because doing the right thing I.e. finding your own parking space is too inconvenient.
You’re basically looking at the situation and only considering your own needs. That’s being selfish
You’re assuming that no handicapped person is going to need that space
That’s a very convenient and self serving way of thinking
Then acting from that selfish and self serving viewpoint you proceed to deprive a parking space to someone who is actually entitled to it and may need it desperately due to being incapacitated
    That’s being an inconsiderate dick.
The only reason you can’t see that this is what you’re being is because you’ve been doing this so long it seems normal.
You may be a wonderful husband and father and help the poor but on this point you’re patently not aware of how selfish you’re being.
Just on this point though, you could be a great guy otherwise
    Hope that helps

Talk about the wrong end of the stick! Your ability to comprehend basic english is truly amazing! You state…”You are taking something that isn’t yours” Just a point ….I am not nor have not taken anything! To consider whether or not too many spaces are being provided is simply a question. It should be asked and if they are all required then fine. However if , as I feel , too many have been provided (in this case of Dublin airport) then it also affects the other users as well. I was unable to get a space within 250m of the lifts with my 94 year old father. He does find walking a bit difficult but does not qualify for a wheelchair sticker for the car. Questioning and discussing situations is good for all the community. I doubt that any person in a wheelchair would want special treatment in situations where it verges on overkill.

Clamping a car in a disabled spot only delays the space being vacated, a big fine is what is needed. It’s the same with most of our traffic laws, too little enforcement. People can drive and park whatever way they like because they get away with it.

There are too many disabled spaces relative to drivers with a permit. I also don’t understand why people don’t have to pay to use these in an otherwise paid parking area?

As a disabled driver I have to say a huge ‘well done’……I seen young men in a sports cars taking a disabled spot while I was indicating that I was turning in……they thought it was hystericial…..I have chronic Rhumatoid Disease and have great difficulty walking. It makes me so angry when able bodied people use these spaces…..clamp the b……s…..everyone of them!

Gardai parked over 2 disabled parking spaces outside Letterkenny General Hospital and were not clamped. Picture sent to local newspaper and TD and nothing was even mentioned about it.

I was informed on another forum that Gardai no longer carry parking tickets, apparently they would have to carry the printing machine and a camera as well and the whole shebang would be too cumbersome. That’s a fair enough point but surely if a Garda can testify before a court that you or anybody else was a protester or demonstrator at a violent event and have his word accepted without question, then he can testify as to whose car he saw.
In my local town it is impossible to rely on getting a disabled spot, people will park in them even if there is a free spot ten yards away, these cars are almost invariably in the high budget bracket, people who have regard only
for the importance of self. I have personally seen Gardai walk past these cars, even when they are occupied, without casting a glance, bus stops draw similar attention.
What hope is there that people will observe the law when the so called upholders of the law, take that attitude.

You should see it in Dundalk , you could catch plenty of bad parkers at any super market , there is a center up here and on any given day all special need parking spaces are taken up by people that don’t need them and also by staff

There’s also another part of this issue. People who actually have a disabled card but the disabled person is not in the car.
I’ve seen it so many times. You see all the disabled spaces taken up in a supermarket carpark, but in the shop itself there are no disabled people to be seen.

Disabled people are not always obvious, qualification for a disabled parking badge also covers mental disability or limited mobility due to damage to vital organs such as heart, lungs etc.

I would never park in a disabled space, however I wish there were parking spaces available (even if its at the furthermost point from the entrance) for those that need more room to get in and out of their cars. Ever tried getting in and out of a two door sports car when someone parks too close to it. I now park with the handbrake off, in order that I can push my car forward to clear the car parked too close beside it.
