10 men jailed for life for shooting Malala in the head

The 17-year-old was the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

A COURT IN Pakistan has sentenced 10 men to life imprisonment for attempting to kill Nobel-prize winning teenage activist Malala Yousafzai in 2012.

Pakistani Taliban militants boarded the teenager’s school bus and shot her in the head in October 2012 for her outspoken views on girls’ education, in an attack that also wounded two of her friends and shocked the world.

Nobel Peace Prize

Malala, now 17, survived and in October last year became the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in history for her courageous and determined fight for all children to have the right to go to school.

“Ten attackers who were involved in the attack on Malala Yousafzai have been sentenced to life imprisonment,” a court official told AFP.

The news was confirmed by a lawyer present at the hearing in the northwestern town of Mingora, as well as a security official.

Life prison sentences in Pakistan are 25 years, and the convicts may appeal in a higher court.

The man suspected of actually firing the gun at Malala, named by officials as Ataullah Khan, is believed to be on the run in Afghanistan, along with Pakistani Taliban chief Mullah Fazlullah, who ordered the attack.

Pakistan’s military announced the arrest of the 10 suspects in September 2014 as part of an operation that involved the army, police and intelligence agencies.

The army spokesman Asim Bajwa said the group had a hitlist of 22 targets in addition to Malala, all ordered by Fazlullah.

Continuing activism

Malala first rose to prominence in 2009, aged just 11, with a blog for the BBC Urdu service chronicling life under Taliban rule in Swat.

Under the Islamist militants’ bloody rule, opponents were murdered, people were publicly flogged for supposed breaches of sharia law, women were banned from going to markets — and girls were stopped from going to school.

In her autobiography published in 2013, Malala described receiving death threats in the months before the attack.

“At night I would wait until everyone was asleep,” she wrote. “Then I’d check every single door and window.”

Malala was flown to Britain for medical treatment following her attack, and the Taliban have vowed to kill her if she ever returns to her homeland.

But she has continued her activism, championing the cause of the 219 Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped a year ago by Boko Haram militants, raising money for destroyed schools in Gaza, and calling for universal education at the UN General Assembly.

How about they stop crippling us with taxes, charges, contributions and levies? That would reduce my stress levels substantially.

So Greg what taxes and Levies does the EU impose? Seeing as you can’t answer and all the red thinners can’t either I will tell you. Exactly none. All our taxes are imposed by the Irish Government which we elect. Ignore the facts if you want but these are the facts. There are some in the EU who want to impose taxes directly but so far the members have said no. There are some who want to impose a common tax base for corporations but so far the members say no. So how many taxes and levies does the EU impose? Zero, none, nothing, nada.

Absolute sh!te. Why are we paying taxes out of our arses now? The taxes might have been implemented by our government but it was because we have to pay for the bailout given to us by the EU.

The general population really starting to bother me. No the EU do not impose taxes on us. In fact it was EU money that created a boom that increased greatly the standard of living in Ireland that allowed us to create a motorway network along with more. Stop with ignorance and wake up.

I work for a reasonably well paid big multinational with benefits etc, and wish the kip would close, horrendous working environment ,just can’t afford to leave and management know they have people over a barrel. The days off and deaths sweet embrace is all I have to look forward to and the EU directive can’t wait.

that’s the price they make you pay, just like the demand they place on our state to let them away without paying their dues. We are just the victims of their economic colonisation.

Amend the tachogragh regulations & make them uniform across the EU & make it law that truck drivers that are fined on the side of the road have first & foremost free legal representation before any sanction is imposed. The stress levels will reduce greatly as will the abilities of police forces around Europe to impose illegal fines.

Now now Dave…we can’t have that! Our employers should put all profits into furnishing employess with fluffy beds and soft comfy pillows so they can nap 3 times a day…and the work day should only be 4 hours long…and the work week should only be 3 days…and you should be able to choose which 3 days and which 4 hours you will work. Then, when that employer is no longer profitable and shuts it’s doors, we can all whinge about how the fat cats screwed us again!
