This is what your living room would look like while wearing Microsoft's HoloLens

Want a virtual dog? No problem.

Chris Burns / YouTube

WISH YOU HAD a bigger screen to watch films on? Or maybe some more photos of your loved ones hanging on the walls of your house? Want a dog, but you don’t have the time to look after one?

Microsoft’s latest foray into the emerging world of augmented reality tech could tackle all of these problems.

At a talk at the recent Build 2015, audience members were able to see a glimpse of what it’s like to use the company’s HoloLens device without putting on a pair.

While a Microsoft employee sauntered around the stage, a special camera was hooked up to show what he was seeing through the glasses.

This included a virtual dog…

… a virtual calendar…

… a scalable video player that could be attached to the wall.

While Facebook’s Oculus Rift has been mainly geared towards gaming, with few practical users in the home demonstrated, Microsoft’s latest offering (or at least, the latest device its showing-off that might never be sold to the public in its current form) has sparked more of a consumer interest – Quartz notes how users who watch the video can almost see the appeal in owning a Hololens.

However, the video above gives audience members a somewhat accurate but misleading idea of what its like to wear and use a Hololens. Critics have complained of a narrow ‘letterbox’ through with you can see the holograms, as Cade Metz from Wired explains:

When you wear the device—as opposed to viewing the holograms via a movie camera equipped with very different hardware—your “field of view” is significantly smaller. You only see holograms in a slim area in front of your eyes—an area that spans about 35 to 40 degrees horizontally, according to [one analyst].

@Alan b..: So we should just make everything legal because people will do it anyway, I’m going to drive my car at 200kph down the M4 because I am curious, therefore it should be legal.

That’s the point of decriminalization, to encourage treatment and minimise the consumer base, since 40 years of aggressive policing has had little or no effect, other than congesting our court and prison systems with nonviolent offenders

Alan b.. alcohol is legal and marketed, and is much more harmful and dangerous than the most popular recreational drug, so what about alcohol? If it is widely available to the population, why not other mind altering substances? Side note; most people’s introduction to chemical party drugs like speed, ecstasy and mdma will be when they are drunk and succeptible, many will admit that they wouldn’t have tried drugs if they hadn’t been drunk when offered.

The counter that “we should just make everything legal” if we argue for drug legality, is a nice soundbite but so devoid of logic it is ridiculous.
The whole purpose of drug prohibition is one of harm reduction which has failed miserably. We now need to look at this policy and revise it to minimise harms from drugs the most obvious start to this is to accept that taking mind altering substances is part of the human condition so we need to regulate all drugs and educate potential users of their harms and benefits.

“Peakin said these statistics can be taken with a pinch of salt and says the increased detection rate is due to an increase in demand for drugs”.

I’d imagine there is no increase in demand for drugs. It will always be massive, but there is an increase demand for getting drugs that you can trust. I used to buy ecstasy & LSD online, on the Silk Road website that got shut down by the FBI. On it, you could read reviews of the product left by other customers, and some people went to the trouble of getting lab tests done so you’d know the quality of the drugs. It is actually safer than buying them on the street. That, in my opinion, is the reason for the increase in people buying drugs online; good drugs, at a lower price, delivered to your door. It actually makes drug taking way safer, but they’re not going to tell us that.

Spot on. It’s basic economics at work. There is increased demand for cheaper, higher quality, lab-tested drugs sourced online, which circumvents the violent criminal system. It’s classic market disruption and a demonstration of how high demand will *always* ensure innovation in supply. Drug laws are fairly static, drug entrepreneurs are dynamic innovators – it’s no match.

The disturbing aspect is that the pictures shown with the cannabis stash were from Revenue and not the Gardai. Revenue can’t tax it so it should be a criminal matter to the Gardai. It shows you the real reason why these drugs are illegal.

Love the way stats can be tweaked to suit the narrative. Yes there has been an increase in seizures but there has also been an increase in users of cannabis in Ireland. As such it is still estimated that 80% to 90% of drugs still get through the system.
