US TECH EXECUTIVE David Goldberg, the husband of Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg, apparently died after falling on a treadmill and striking his head at a hotel in Mexico.
Goldberg, 47, was the chief executive of online polling firm SurveyMonkey and husband of Facebook’s chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg. He died suddenly on Friday, according to his brother, who did not give a cause of death.
Officials have confirmed he died in hospital after an accident while he was working out during a family trip to a Pacific coast resort in Punta Mita in Mexico.
“His relatives have indicated that he went to work out, and that they became concerned when he did not come back,” an official at the state prosecutor’s office said.
“They went looking for him and found him in a pool of blood next to a treadmill, apparently after he fell and struck his head at the hotel gym,” the official said, declining to be named.
Goldberg sustained “severe head trauma and haemorrhaging,” and died at a medical centre in Nuevo Vallarta, the official added.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that Goldberg was “an amazing person.”
“I am glad I got to know him. My thoughts and prayers are with Sheryl and her family,” Zuckerberg wrote in a posting.
Aside from her work at tech firms, Sandberg is the author of “Lean In,” a best-selling memoir presented as a modern feminist manifesto that urges women to work to succeed in juggling their careers and family life.
President Barack Obama remembered Goldberg as what he called a leader who always tried to empower others.
“He was generous and kind with everybody, and cared less about the limelight than making sure that the people he worked with and loved succeeded in whatever they did,” Obama tweeted.

Having said that in an observation …
Isn’t it somewhat ironic that technology killed him. The road, the traditional way, may have been a safer option – if we ignore pre-destination !
…and that’s why I never go near treadmills…
I thought all gyms had to have an instructor nearby at all times , don’t know if it would have made a difference had he got help straight away, sad for his family though r.i.p.
Even the best gyms the instructors are shared between 10 or so people, unless you’ve personally signed up for your own special programme and their actual knowledge varies wildly.
Always get a full head to toe checkup from the GP before starting into any workouts or gym programme no matter how young you are, I’ve seen people of 17-18 who look relatively fit keel over in the gym, you never know you may have some kind of pre-existing heart condition you’re totally unaware of, that a fitness instructor would not spot. He might spot diaphoresis and breathing problems but that will be seconds before an MI, whereas the GP can detect it weeks or months earlier.
It was a hotel gym, they are often just a small room with no staff.

Whats suspicious? You can easily have the setting too high, loose your footing and hit your head as you go down. Or if he had chest pain lost his balance or something, can happen any number of ways.
