Dublin's Viking Splash Tours are heading for Europe...

AAAAARRRRGGGHHHH!

6076199929_83310a7760_o Mic Mic

LOCK UP YOUR daughters, the Vikings are coming.

Dublin’s Viking Splash Tours are some very modern Norsemen indeed though – they’re looking at a €100,000 expansion and they’ve announced they’re going to do it through crowdfunding.

The lender in question, Linked Finance, are Ireland’s largest crowd sourcing venture. They recently announced a €250 million expansion of their own fund by 2017.

The tours, formed in 1999, are famous for driving (authentic World War 2) amphibious vehicles around Dublin landmarks both by sea and land while shouting very loudly at passers-by and wearing Viking helmets.

They’re also exceptionally well-reviewed with just under a maximum rating on TripAdvisor, and are pretty much part of the city’s furniture at this stage.

With the amount of attention the tours attract from tourists (and stag and hen parties naturally) it’s rare indeed to see one of the tours’ vehicles empty.

Vikings1 Viking Splash Viking Splash

So, their expansion has been coming, but what will it involve?

Initially, the money will be used to develop the next generation of the company’s vehicle fleet, but after that, expansion to new cities will be the order of the day.

TheJournal.ie spoke to Crevan Dunne, founder of the company, who feels very confident about the future.

“We’re a successful, profitable, and hopefully enjoyable venture, but our six vehicles are 75 years old,” he says.

They’ve served us wonderfully, but we have to look to the future and that’s what this is about. So our project will see us design the next iteration of vehicle that will secure our future.
After that, we’ll be looking to expand into other European cities. Our current vehicles aren’t allowable in certain other cities so the expansion has to wait until our new ones are ready.

No cities are mentioned by name, but according to Dunne they’ll have a “million-plus catchment” with “river or sea access through historical areas”. So, pretty much every European city then.

Why crowd funding though?

Well, we’re very customer friendly, and we’d like to think we’re an integral part of Dublin’s landscape at this stage.
So rather than traditional banking routes, we thought it would be interesting to give other people the opportunity to get on board.
The structure is also very important to us, this kind of loan offers both very favourable terms and flexibility. So, given how seasonal our business is, we can move forward with the project outside the summer months when we’re at our busiest.

Meanwhile, Peter O’Mahony of Linked Finance sees the announcement as a “milestone” for both them and peer lending in Ireland in general.

“It’s a milestone also in the development of an innovative company,” he said.

The speed with which businesses like Viking Splash can secure loans from us will mean no delays in the completion of their new amphibious vehicle.

    @Deborah Behan:

“How many more votes do FG want to lose?”

I have vowed to NEVER AGAIN give a vote to a FG candidate, no matter who it is. I was always a FG voter over my lifetime but never again. I don’t vote for traitors or EU lovers who put the EU before the people of Ireland. I am considering giving my vote in future to SF, AAA and PBP as I believe they cannot be worse then the current idiots and deserve to be given a chance to prove themselves. If they do mess-up then they will be history at the following general election. After what the Irish people have endured for the last few years, what have we to lost by trying them out? It can’t get any worse.

In fairness Ciaran, it wasn’t just the rallies that made the government roll back, it was also the mass refusal to pay by already rode upon people of the country. The ‘peaceful protests’ around manholes had no impact in the roll back/suspension, in fact they actually made it harder for the rest of us! If people had paid, no amount of rallies and marches would have achieved what we did. We’ve marched about austerity and it has fallen on deaf ears as they have us by the short and curlies as they take USC and property tax from our wages if we refuse to pay if water was set up the same way, no doubt the taxpayers would be paying that too.

The mass marches were important in building solidarity and giving people confidence to engage in non payment. But it was the mass boycott which ultimately broke the back of Irish Water and without it we would be paying another banker tax now. The lesson is clear. Obedience and compliance is a recipe for exploitation. Solidarity and protest works and has the establishment running scared in the face of a mass movement of the working class.

And finally ministers, take the €6000 pay rise that you just gave yourselves and reverse it. Prove your good intentions, then get back to me about paying my water bill.

@stopit: unfortunately, it doesn’t pay for roads either. It recoups over €1b each year in motor tax, and the largest council spend was dublin at €60m. ITT (NRA) gets most of it’s funding from a multitude EU schemes, and tolling for motorway maintenance. Motor tax is just another grab tax (one that doesn’t cover the related usage), and that is why there was no issues in increasing it to pay for water as there was zero effect on road expendature.

I cannot see anything in contract law that would allow recovery of non-tax based debt without a signed contract.

Either way, this is going to bite FF/FG hard in the backside it pensioners are the ones that have to protest against being threatened by goons. Any TD worth their salt reading this, that wants their sons and daughters to be elected in the future, should immediately take action to state that no-one is going to be threatened and all IW bills are obsolete, otherwise they are going to be slaughtered in the January 2017 election.

(and before any shills come on, yes I think that anyone who paid should get the payment added to their tax credits, minus the environmental bribe)

I have no problem with rabble-rousing right-wingers campaigning for workers to pay more taxes so that the rich can have ‘free’ water, but they should confine the campaigning to the abolition issue and not encourage people not to pay a legitimate charge.

Personally, as a socialist, I prefer the ‘pay as you use’ and ‘polluter pays’ principle, but I accept that the politics of the right have won this debate and as a democrat I have to accept that. So, go on Michael O’Leary, and fill your swimming pool, I’ll sort it out for you with my USC.

Our water is supposed to be paid for through taxation Peter, there aren’t many ‘freeloaders’ as you call them around, just people who refuse to have a vital human resource in the hands of an incompetent for profit entity. Irish water have shown that they have no intention of fixing or upgrading water systems around the country, only lining their own pockets. Sending out debt collectors before they have provided the service worthy of payment shows their cynical nature, and it will probably be small businesses that suffer

I would rather the government raised taxes to help pay for water than pay a private company. If we need to have a system that encourages water conservation then surely a system can be worked out whereby we can claim tax credits at the end of each year.. people would have no problem conserving if it means getting a few quid back in the new year. But what’s really going on here is all in preparation to sell off our most precious natural resource to a foreign company and that can’t happen until it’s profitable hence the introduction of a collection agency. If we do hand over our water system to a foreign company which will undoubtedly include our rivers and our lakes, I would be very surprised if we saw any significant change in the system and the charges will skyrocket

Good, I was waiting for this to happen, never thought it would though. Whether people agree with paying bills or not is irrelevant, it was a legitimate bill people had to pay but many just stuck their 2 fingers up at it. Would they do the same with other utilities? Not a hope.

I suppose it’s common things these days , multinationals paying no taxes, not paying for water because its them that a debt collection agency has been set up to collect for.

If IW go down the road of using debt collectors, it just could tip the balance to outright revolt.
If it does, the government will have brought it upon themselves.
