This just shows the sorry state of this country. The government control nearly every aspect of the housing sector. Yet they cant build homes for the population. Younger workers are being screwed. High rents and expensive houses are suiting the state owned banks. But are ruining the economy.

@prop joe: they’ve just built 333 units! that’s what the article is about. the housing budget goes to these units instead of houses. the private sector, on the other hand, is investing billions of non taxes in building tens of thousands of houses, freeing up lower cost houses and apartments. what do you want, the govt to race ahead and put the PMVT, and developers, out of business?

@Gulliver Foyle: Developers are only interested in building office blocks and hotels. homeless people can take a hike as far as they’re concerned.

@Sean Conway: the vast majority of developments are housing. even the new luxury capital dock is housing. it’s not aimed at housing homeless, but it stops workers taking other rental units, eventually freeing up the lower end of the housing market, which hopefully lower paid families can eventually rent.

@Gulliver Foyle: stop making sense, the usual people in here want everything in this country to grind to a halt until tens of thousands of social homes are built right where they want them to be built.and also from reading comments in here they all want 3/4 bed houses with front and back gardens.

Wait just a minute. The Peter McVerry Trust very kindly provided just under 1,000 beds across the country – and the government claim credit for this as part of the part of the 333 that were promised in the government’s winter strategy.
By this logic when Mrs. McGuire rents a room they’ll claim they just took someone else off the streets…

@Boyne Sharky: hold on a minute these beds were part funded by the government and the rest through public donation. I am not an apologist for this awful FG/FF government but tell it as it is. Housing should not depend on charity and the only solution to homelessness is for FG/FF to build more public housing.

@Boyne Sharky: the government provided the funding for these units so they can claim credit in the same way as if they are paying the rent to Mrs. McGuire under hap they can claim credit. That’s not saying the whole housing situation isn’t a complete disaster.

@Boyne Sharky: In fairness the government only part funded this and therefore can only partly make this claim.

A Referendum is needed to upgrade the defective Irish Constitution to establish special status for the Family Home … like the German Constitution.

Family Homes and not simply property like offices, warehouses, shops and pubs; they are human shelter, a basic need in the hierarchy of needs, a life essential like food, water, cloths etc …

Family homes have a higher order importance than just property because of their underpinning of human dignity and family.
