The British Pound loves David Cameron

The UK currency jumped as it became clear the Conservatives were on the march to victory. Not such good news for Irish consumers though.

WORLD EVENTS CONSISTENTLY affect financial markets, either for good or ill.

Natural disasters and political upheaval can send stocks soaring, or kill off a company’s shares completely. And one thing that’s certain today is that the pound sterling very much wanted a Conservative victory in yesterday’s general election.

Yesterday’s landslide for the David Cameron-led party saw the value of the pound begin to jump as soon as it became clear the Tories were on their way to victory.

Given all polls before the election proper were convinced it was to be Labour’s day the stagnation of the pound before the dramatic jump makes more sense.

XE XE.com XE.com

The phenomenon makes some sense when you consider the Conservatives would traditionally be seen as the party of free market capitalism.

Unfortunately, it makes things more expensive for consumers on this side of the water. But exporters will love it.

The precipitous fall of the Euro following Mario Draghi’s giant bout of quantitative easing earlier this year is another good example of how dramatic the effect of world events can be on financial markets.

The currency has been in freefall for months, with some suggestions it may fall as low as being worth just 0.8 against the US Dollar by the end of 2017.

As a purchasing manager for a company in Ireland, this drop in value of the euro is a serious pain in the face. I’m buying no more than I used to, yet it is costing a lot more money. It’s very difficult. Doesn’t look like things will change then. :/

So the weakened euro is discouraging imports from non-euro markets and incentivising domestic consumption then? Sounds like the policies are working.

FG cutting tax is debatable, however they are offloading public services into private hands such as health and water, so in the end it costs us all more, despite any decreases in tax. Right wing privatisation will be the death of us. Literally

The pound loves stability, anything but a hung parliament would have resulted in a rise in the pound. Think a Tory majority probably gave it an extra push though.

Was going to say this almost certainly would have happened if any party had won an overall majority. Conservative win, buying stuff on Amazon more expensive and we don’t even gets to see my favourite picture from the last election of a “Hung” Parliment

It is entirely possible to log into amazon.de and purchase from there. Interestingly you’ll find the euro price is often exactly the same as sterling. I just bought a Kindle for €99 €7 postage, UK price was £109, I figure a€40 saving. Worth checking out.

Great news in Scotland – Independence is truly on the horizon fully , at last !

Only a matter of time , before The UK disintegrates altogether and Ireland Unites fully , to a One Island pluralist Republic.

Not really, the electorate had the chance to vote for independence which is the SNPs main policy. They shied away from it due to scare tactics from Tory and labour so they’re not core SNP voters in their want for independence sense, but rather in the local representation in the union sense I fear! :(

You gotta love the way the business press praises major conservative figures like Hillary Clinton and Osbourne and Cameron etc saying they love them because they are “measured” , “cautious” , “pragmatic” and “pro business” when the real reason is quite simple…agree with their policies or not the city and the 1% in general (no I don’t think being in the 1% is treason like some, but you do have all the power that can’t be denied)…well…they don’t like them because they HAPPEN to agree with their policies, they love them because they are good b1tchs who obey, who do as they are told for a pat on the head, a donation, and a non executive directorship when they leave politics
