A MAN DIED last night after falling into the river Liffey in Dublin city centre.
The victim was one of two men who entered the river separately late yesterday evening, sparking a large rescue operation, a spokesman for Dublin Fire Brigade confirmed. The first incident unfolded at around 10.20pm, when a man was helped from the water alive after entering the river near the Ha’penny Bridge. The man was arrested by gardaí.
A second man, believed to be in his early 20s, then entered the river at the Talbot Memorial Bridge near Custom House Quay at around 11.10pm. Another search operation was launched and the man was found and taken to the Mater Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.
Three fire engines, a turntable ladder and a tender attended the scene as well as ambulances and garda vehicles. The two incidents are thought to be unrelated.
