All the colours of the rainbow: The day Ireland made history

Ireland said yes!

IRELAND, IT’S BEEN emotional.

The sun was shining down on the people of Ireland today as our little country made history by being the first nation to vote in same-sex marriage by popular vote.

There were happy scenes from up and the down the country as people celebrated the Yes result of 62% to 38% No.

There were tears, marriage proposals and hugs all round. These round-up pics from the day will bring a tear to your eye.

Backwards to Castlemaine to find someone to carpool with for my lift to Tralee because its the nearest village or walk to Tralee and arrive at work anyway, or maybe arrange for neighbours to go to work at the same time whether they want to or not!! @Zlim Jody: cycling uses about a third of the energy of walking so you can usually multiply your walking pace by three to get a good estimate of speed and maximum distance you can do. A completely unfit person can cycle about 10km without being tired, and if they push themselves about 60km on a weekend for exercise. You quickly build stamina cycling compared to eg running, so you can get to satisfying distances like 120km in only a few weeks if you enjoy it and are happy to spend time cycling.

What about peoplle who need the Gardaí to help them? People who use public hospitals? The government is quite obviously not perfect but without tax revenue you would have absolutely none of these services. If you have a valid point you’d like to discuss please make it.

Most journeys in cars are single occupancy, imagine if they had to carry all the extra items on their back instead. If you physically had to carry the unnecessary stuff in cars around you would simply not carry it.

This guy Ryan is a menace …. . he is causing havoc in this country. Green is right!

He forced us all to change to Diesel Cars and now we all have to scrap them as they are more polluting than petrol.

Now we are being forced by Richard Bruton and Plastic O’Donoghue to buy Electric cars … but a 12 yr old petrol car has less emissions than an Electric car changed every 3 years .. do the modelling! .. due to battery mining and manufacture … based on current power gen mix.

In 10 years time we will be forced to scrap Electric cars and go “Hydrogen” .. perfect fuel .. non fossil, produced by electrolysis ( wind power) , same technology as LPG (LPG is fossil based so not on) or butane cylinder for you Barbi.

Hydrogen means No Carbon cost of mining and battery manufacture for Electric cars.

Poorer people are still paying €600 and €700 motor tax a year for older cars while Diesels drivers are paying just €280 or less. Gov sponsored Torture by Tax!

Totally Daft insane stuff from Fine Gael Gov and FF backers. These guys are not up to the job …. and worse ..listening to the Looney Greens … daft.

@Neuville-Kepler62F: Please catch up. You will never again see or hear of a hydrogen car. Completely impractical (and by the way they are electric cars which charge their batteries using hydrogen!). Electric car batteries last 30 years and pollution ends the day they roll off the production line. Cheaper, faster, cleaner and better in literally every conceivable way. No negatives of electric can be cited without considering the equivalent in the oil industry. Don’t forget, petrol cars use half as much electricity as EVs per mile, ON TOP of the petrol, when you factor in refinement of oil etc.

@Use Your Head: … “Electric Car pollution ends the day they roll off the production line … wrong.

12 yr owned petrol car has less CO2 emissions then an electric Car changed every 3 years … and who will be able to afford electric cars …. those who change their cars every 3 years!!! Ask Richard Bruton .. on his second already!

do the modelling…. based on current electricity gen mix.

Hydrogen fuel cell ..way to go ..they are not batteries as you understand them.

So you will all be told in 10 yrs to scrap your electric cars … just wait.

@Neuville-Kepler62F: charge an electric car using diesel alone and it is FIVE TIMES more efficient! Our grid is currently almost half renewables, so now we’re at 10 times more efficient. Used electric cars cost €5k and you can save that amount in fuel, maintenance and tax in the first 18 months. There is simply no argument against them and no other option. Google hydrogen fuel options. It’s even worse than fossil fuels, and profoundly impractical and expensive and dangerous. Never before has something been so guaranteed not to happen.

There was a suggestion made a while back that services like Uber or Lyft should be allowed operate in rural Ireland as they do in the US. So, make it so there is no requirement for a taxi or hackney licence for people doing a limited number of hours of “car share” driving in rural areas.
Also, there already is a very extensive public transport network that covers the vast majority of rural Ireland that only operates for 2 hours per day during the week – the school bus network. How difficult would it be to make this operate longer hours to get more use out of the vehicles and provide more employment for the drivers?

@SC: Obviously you are one of the privileged who never had to walk a few miles to school and home afterwards , as we did years ago. We lived in the country, we got jobs in industry, farming, buildings etc., we built houses on parents sites, or bought sites locally. We could not afford to live in towns or cities. We need cars, no public transport within 4/5 miles of most country isolated areas . Just get real, use your intelligence, see that Ireland does not end at the Red Cow or at Blanch.

Valid suggestion – something that might work in some villages. Go-cars already very successful in Dublin. Joe Duffy’s arrogant negativity towards Eamon Ryan was despicable and completely unprofessional.

This coming from the shower who ‘gifted’ us with diesel engine cars by raising the revenue take on petrol. In total ignorance of the fact that they were even worse for peoples health than petrol engines are. Now, according to Eamon Ryan, we are supposed to believe that it is all Volkswagen’s fault. And whereas VW are nothing short of lowlife s*&m with their emission lies, Ryan and the Green Party’s ignorant idiocy predates VW’s lies by many years. Green my a88e. Greed would be nearer the mark.
