Gardaí appeal for witnesses to Tallaght shooting

35-year-old Alan O’Neill was shot dead on the Kiltalown Road last night. Two men have been arrested.

Updated at 18.40

THE MAN SHOT dead in Tallaght last night has been named as 35-year-old Alan O’Neill.

The incident happened at Kiltalown Road at around 10:35 pm.

O’Neill was treated at the scene but died after being transferred to Tallaght hospital. It’s understood he was not known to gardaí.

Speaking at a press conference at Tallaght Garda Station this afternoon, gardaí said that O’Neill was set upon after getting out of his car and shot several times.

Gardaí on patrol at the time were called to the area after a report of a Nissan Almera acting suspiciously.

As they approached two men ran towards the Almera from another car that had just been set alight.

The two men, aged 18 and 28, were arrested while another man at the scene escaped. They are being held at Tallaght Garda Station

Gardaí are running door to door enquiries but say they can’t comment on whether or not the killing is gangland related at this time. They have appealed for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

90382223 Sam Boal Sam Boal

Locals interviewed by RTE News said that O’Neill was a “lovely chap”.

“It’s crazy that this has happened,” said one woman, while another man added: “he was lovely, a very nice fella. It’s so sad.”

The scene of the shooting and the burnt out car have been preserved for a technical examination.

A post mortem was due to be held today.

Gardai in Tallaght are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have any information to contact them in Tallaght on 01 6666000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

Let’s hope something can be done to halt the loss of banking services in rural Ireland. We’ve had local BOI branches closed all around us and now the AIB are going cashless! So what exactly is branch going to offer customers? Is it just a mortgage application office? Local businesses are to be left with no way to deposit cash or cheques outside of Post office hours as the letter from AIB says the cash drop facility is to go too.

@Sara Davis: how about legislation that doesnt take 10 years for a bank to repossess a house from a tactical defaulter when house prices fall below value of mortgage??
We would have a variable rate 1.5% less than present then.
    Ireland’s laws+legal system a joke.

I would say the government is in favour of this, but can’t show it in public. The less cash in the system, the more traceable money becomes. There are so many ‘cash jobs’ going on around the country they are losing out on a lot of tax.

Seems like quite a logical move to me. I’d love to see the statistics re cash usage in Ireland in 2022. We are definitely moving towards a cashless society which is fine by me, i would say 90% + of my transactions are by tap these days. Not sure what the outrage is all about. Now dont get me started on their customer service helpline – id prefer to see them in front of an oireachtas committee for that shambles – which they still blame on covid (working from home not working!)

@MB: I don’t have an issue with cashless either personally.

Most of the people I come across with an issue about cashless cite fears that the bak would have total control over their money and could restrict access in the morning.

They always get confused when I point out that any cash they ever have on them originated from a bank in the first place so the banks could still do that in the morning regardless but they haven’t, because why would they.

@Gavin Mckenna: Gavin, not trying to offend but we’ve got to move with the times. I don’t think your comments are fair – re old people in rural Ireland An post are still providing the services , also ATMs will still be operational. The world is moving this direction and in order to “remain”competitive decisions like this need to be taken, would you pay an extra €25 pm in charges to have it available? These are the stark choices if people want cheap banking.

Cash Is a tangible Asset, credit is not, It’s nothing to do with being old or young, everyone wants everything now in the moment, The generation of, instant, access, no one even teaches they kids to count money, hand them a revolute card and off they go, not understanding the value of anything, I want I buy, no saving, just spending. Good luck in future house buying when all you do is spend, give your kids a post office account, a credit union account, teach them the value of money. And only last week, Internet went in a group of shops in Dublin, and staff could only take cash. Everyone scrambling with their cards today find a bank machine. WELCOME to cashless society. Banks systems go down regularly, when they are totally reliant on them, watch the failures.

Foreign currency, check cashing, children and teens getting money from granny, farmers markets, there are many reasons that banks would have cash. And that banks would actually be a service to its customers. Such an exercise of making decisions that make no sense to its target audience-the public.
