Garda arrested over leaking of information to media in Roma case

The Ombudsman for Children issued a damning report on the case last July.

A GARDA HAS been arrested this morning in connection with the leaking of information to the media in a high profile case involving children.

Two years ago two blonde Roma children, aged 2 and 7, were removed from their families over fears that they had been abducted.

The Ombudsman for Children Emily Logan issued a damning report on the case last July.

Following the report a Chief Superintendent was appointed to investigate issues raised relating to personal and sensitive information appearing in the public domain.

RTÉ is reporting that the garda arrested is the most senior officer ever to have been arrested as part of a criminal investigation.

The gardaí have confirmed that an investigation is on-going.

The article does not state a Chief Superintendent has been arrested, it states RTE reports that it’s the most senior officer ever arrested! Hell of a difference.

Maybe just maybe the gardai are turning the corner in regards to corruption. Long over due. They must be given the right tools to do the job the public ask of them. It’s a terrible state of affairs when a guard catches a criminal and then the judge lets the criminal off because his mother smoked a joint back in the 80s. You know what I mean. Things have to change right true the system.

    http://www.joe.ie/uncategorized/garda-walks-free-after-entire-18-month-assault-sentence-suspended/24457

The Judge basically issued the sentence to highlight that there is a convention in the courts that gardai will always have custodial sentences suspended

That case you referred to related to an off duty Garda. He was convicted of assault causing harm and there is no way in the world that he would have gotten a custodial sentence if he wasnt a Garda – it is unheard of for a person to be jailed with a previously clean record for such an assault. This was another case where the judge deliberately chose to jail someone because he was a Garda, but thought better of it. This Garda also lost his job as a result of this conviction, which us automatic – unlike a builder, a truck driver or a factory worker so that Garda was actually punished MORE than a civilian in a comparable case. Check out the irish sentencing guidelines which, if applied fairly and consistently in the Waterford case would have resulted in non custodial cases there too – but the newly appointed judge there (Albert Reynolds daughter appointed in the dying days of Fianna Fail government) decided to make a name for herself and went totally contrary to the established precedent. There are people convicted of far more serious or repeated assaults in the courts all over Ireland every day who are given suspended sentences – so its plain to see that Gardai actually have much greater chances of being jailed than regular people.

Now, Garda Officer, XXXX For the record, admit that you did the leaking. We have the evidence. [wink/wink]
Answer: No, I did no leaking. I would never do that.
Question: Now, are you sure about that?
Answer: I’m sure. I’d stake my reputation as an honourable Garda Office on it.
Question: Sure, you can say fairer than that, can you?
    Answer: No
Question: Listen, are you joining us for golf next month?
    Answer : Sure.
Question: Excellent. Let’s not keep you any longer.
