Vince Vaughn: Guns in schools would help stop school shootings

The actor told GQ that mass shootings only happen in schools that are defenceless.

ACTOR VINCE VAUGHN is a strong believer in the rights of Americans to own, carry and use guns.

In an interview with British GQ, Vaughn argues that one of the reasons the US has seen so many mass shootings in schools is because guns are not allowed there.

CBSN / YouTube

“All these gun shootings that have gone down in America since 1950, only one or maybe two have happened in non-gun-free zones,” he told GQ’s Jonathan Heaf.

Take mass shootings. They’ve only happened in places that don’t allow guns. These people are sick in the head and are going to kill innocent people. They are looking to slaughter defenceless human beings. They do not want confrontation. In all of our schools it is illegal to have guns on campus, so again and again these guys go and shoot up these f***ing schools because they know there are no guns there.

Vaughan argues that the US right to bear arms was included in the constitution to protect the public against “corrupt and abusive government” and as such should be treated like the right to free speech.

The True Detective actor goes on to ask, “You think the politicians that run my country and your country don’t have guns in the schools their kids go to? They do. And we should be allowed the same rights.”

During the course of the interview, Vaughn also says that he he believes that, “Edward Snowden is a hero.”

“My idea of treason is that you sell secrets to the enemy. He gave information to the American people,” he said of the NSA whistleblower.

Viking have you any better or realistic suggestions to protect kids in school? “Banning all guns” is great in theory except for the fact there’s more guns in America than people so it’s not going to happen. Why not station one or two armed police officers at each school, If they’re trusted to protect the rest of us then why not the schools?

The solutions is unfortunately one solution, which is ban all guns, it might never happen in America, you’re right, but anything else is just a compromised half baked solution which will solve one problem, but create a new one, in this case, either they do it right, which they won’t or keep the mass shootings.

    Juan

A Japanese lad went and stabbed a load of kids in a school not too long ago. Should we also ban knives? It’s not the gun or the knife that kills, it is the person who decides to use them for evil purposes. They also tend to go where they know the public are disarmed. The solution is to arm the good guys for 1. a detterrant and 2. to protect children if someone is stupid enough to turn up at a school with bad intentions. Disarming everyone as you suggest, still leaves guns in the hands of criminals, like every other country.

There are also more guns than people in Switzerland – it doesn’t necessarily follow that this leads to mass shootings. There’s more to the situation than the number of guns, a cultural adjustment is both required and unlikely

Vaughn’s argument is that the presence of guns would act as a deterrent to attackers who see schools as vulnerable targets, not necessarily that they would be useful in the event a shooting takes place. He seems to have missed the fact that most school shootings are carried out by pupils, and thus are likely to have a more complicated reason for selecting their target than cool risk evaluation.

    He’s right about Snowden, though.

I think he also missed the fact that these massacres often end with the shooter killing themselves, so I don’t think guns are going to be a deterrent to these people, they don’t seem to fear death and probably want to go out in a hail of bullets anyway.

There’s logic there though. If guns don’t exist then gun attacks won’t happen at all, that we know for sure. If guns are present in schools etc then there’s a defence there against possible mass shootings. Take that cinema shooting for instance, if somebody had returned fire on that nutcase he’d have killed a lot less people.

The gun isn’t gonna be removed from American society anytime soon so the only alternative is to introduce deterrents. The idea of mass shootings is to cause maximum carnage and they’re usually carried out by a disgruntled person who seeks revenge on a certain group such as fellow pupils, employees etc they usually shoot themselves then after enough damage has been done, the idea of having defence against this will destroy their motivation for it, not because they might be shot dead but because they won’t even begin to do the damage they intend to do. They only do it because it’s easy, take the easy out of it and it won’t happen as much.

So more guns is the answer? It worked well in NI when the RUC and British Army were armed. Barely a shot fired by the various paramilitary groups. More guns is the only deterrent for this kind of thing.

Yeah it would have been great for the IRA wouldn’t it if the RUC and British army were unarmed. Not that this has anything to do with American gun control but it was the IRA that fired at the British army before the army fired at them, maybe the IRA should have remained unarmed instead of embarking on a futile murder campaign that seen 3500 people die for nothing and over 40000 injured. Idiots.

And no, more guns isn’t the answer but seeing as gun laws in the US aren’t going to change anytime soon it seems as if deterrents is the only alternative, having more guns is one form of deterrent. The ideal answer would be to have no guns but is this really going to happen in America?

The UVF killed people in 1966 and we’re arrested by the RUC and jailed, same way the IRA were killing in the late 50′s and into the 60′s. The troubles didnt start to 1969 and the date can be pinpointed to August 12th of that year.

I am being honest. You claimed the RUC and UVF started it, I simply stared that the UVF killings in 1966 were NOT the troubles and we’re quickly dealt with by the RUC, Gusty Spence (UVF Leader) was jailed and never got out until the mid 80′s so to say the UVF and RUC started it is kinda ludicrous. It started due to civil unrest in Derry then Belfast, the 12th Aug 1969, the unrest led to the deployment of the army.

Oh yes, because more guns to fight guns is totally logical. It’s not like there aren’t cuckoos who will take the guns from the teachers desk to kill people. Noooo never.

What needs to be done is having more regulation on the guns already out there. Ban them and stop selling bullets. See how many less shootings there are then. Sure you can always go black market, but there will still be less because it’s more difficult and more expensive.

And, honestly, why the hell do you not need to take a test before getting a gun licence anyway? You need to take tests for a driving licence, but not for a gun??

None of our schools have guns and we clearly don’t have the same problems that America do

Very funny phone call with Vince Vaughn (Mike MacRae) on the Jimmy Dore show:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dL0A9aC6BPk

I was wondering why this political show which had US politicians (impersonations by MacRae) on the phone. Jimmy called Vince his favourite conservative, now I see why.

The Ron Paul, Chris Christie and Rick Perry calls are hilarious. Pity we don’t have anything like this, here in Ireland.

The problem isn’t the guns in the schools its the Americans in the schools.
If the standard response of Government is to whack every little opponent it doesn’t like, while leaving the big ones alone then it’s hardly surprising if it’s people do the same.
