JOAN BURTON HAS announced a series of forums for Labour members across the country to discuss policy ideas ahead of the next general election.
A social media campaign – #talktojoan – has also been launched with the Tánaiste encouraging all people to communicate the ideas and topics that are important to them.
However, Burton said she was concentrating on people with positive ideas.
Speaking to the media at the Merrion Hotel in Dublin, she said: “We have, and I think most parties in Ireland experience, the so-called keyboard warriors and I think we’re all used to reading an amount of that comment.
I’m really concentrating on people with positive ideas.
The #talktojoan hashtag has already generated some chat on Twitter in the last 24 hours and quite a lot of it has been negative:
Burton said the forums would help Labour to develop policy ahead of the next general election, which she said is due “sometime between now and early April”.
Asked if she would prefer an election before the end of the year, Burton said there is “a lot of merit” in the government going the full term.
She said the forums would focus on issues that are most important to families as well as job creation, housing, childcare, health and education.
The first forum, which is only open to Labour members, takes place in Dublin tomorrow with others planned for Cork, Limerick and Galway in the coming six weeks.
Details of the online campaign, which will include a Twitter chat with Burton, are to follow.

Joan appears to be trying to copy Nicola Sturgeon’s success in the recent UK elections, it won’t work for Joan unless she is prepared to get out into the constituencies and listen to what people say. The people who matter are now tuned into social media. If she has something to say then she should stop hiding behind Enda.
At best a diversion, at worst just another example of how utterly meaningless so much of our politics is. I’ve been wondering who are the PR advisers to the FG/Labour government, because (unless it’s been proven that utterly obviously transparently cynical tactics have the best long-term ‘status-quo’ maintaining results) nearly everything FG/Labour have done has just alienated more people. Unless you’re someone who supports the parties with the passion of an extreme football club fan…….who is any of this supposed to reassure, convince, encourage, etc?!! It really is just a matter of playing out the government’s term, creating fear of any alternatives, denying they said or did what they previously said or did and hope voters just get so discouraged they don’t either vote or vote for anyone else…..and if we vote in FF or SF they will inevitably do pretty much the same (with minor differences). SF are already doing this frequently in opposition and FF have done it in opposition and government. Use your vote the best way you can, but don’t stop at voting. Lobby politicians and refuse to let them blather on.

Careful guys. This is an obvious baiting exercise. Labour wants to censor comments/ criticisms on the internet with proposed bills by both Pat Rabbitte and Lorraine Higgins. So, if people respond to this bait by being overly critical, Labour will use these as examples in order to push through their legislation, censoring the inherent. Don’t give them the ammunition. Object to government censoring the internet.
Correct Michael Farrelly. The general population have found a forum for sharing information not under the control of Government. We must protect it by being prudent with comments and not responding to baiting or give kneejerk reactions. They have protected Dail privilege (quite rightly); our freedom of expression and dissemination of information needs to be protected too. Don’t give them an excuse!

Would seem to many a waste of taxpayer money but I supposed 12million was handed over to political parties so the could indulge themselves. With only 5000 paid up party members of which only 1200 bothered to turn up at the parties conference in Kerry. Ended up with more Gardai doing security that delegates debating FG policy’s. Maybe if Joan was more positive when replying to Dail questions instead of getting her bass balls entangled with mary Lou’s and actually answering questions instead of blaming FF. I find it hard to see the positive in taking money away for one parent family’s while multi nationals foreign and domestic move profits out of the country to enrich investors.
