Attack on elderly couple a 'sign of the times'

The couple in their seventies were tied up and threatened with a hammer during the ordeal at their home in Waterford. A local councillor has said the community is in shock.

A TRAUMATIC ATTACK on an elderly Waterford couple during which they were tied up and threatened has been described as a sign of the times by a local councillor.

Sinn Féin county councillor Pat Fitzgerald, who is a neighbour of Nicholas and Kathleen Dunphy in Dunmore East, has told TheJournal.ie that it was an “horrific ordeal” for the couple, who are in the their late seventies.

They were threatened with a hatchet and a hammer and a quantity of cash was stolen from their home at around 9pm on Monday. Kathleen Dunphy freed herself after the group of masked men left the house. She raised the alarm at a neighbour’s house.

Pat Fitzgerald has said that the couple has not yet returned to their home, and that they are being cared for by members of their family. He said that the Dunphys had been the victims of theft in the past, but that it “wasn’t an ordeal like this one”.

He said that the couple aren’t wealthy people and are decent and hardworking. They live in a rural area but they are neighbours nearby and the house is situated on a busy road. Fitzgerald said that incidents like this are becoming more frequent and that it’s a “sign of the times” that they are on the increase.

He said the community is in shock and sending best wishes to Nicholas and Kathleen.

Gardaí are searching for at least three masked men. A spokesperson told TheJournal.ie that no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing. They’re appealing for anyone who may have any information to contact them on 051 874 888.

If you have no idea what the cause is how can you rule out terrorism?

@Walt Jabsco: Because, as I’ve read from other sources, no traces of explosives have been found so far, and the pilot had refused to undergo the deicing procedure, as well as the aircraft maintenance company is under investigation for not following procedure in regards to oil change and air filter replacement.

    @Larissa Caroline Nikolaus:
Terrorism might be unlikely, but until such time as the precise cause has been established (which it hasn’t yet) how can anything be ruled out?

@Ger Healy: Why, do you think airplanes magically maintain themselves, and don’t require oil, or air filters?

The Russian prosecutor’s office launched criminal proceedings for suspected violations of air traffic safety rules. They found reports that the airliner had been banned from operating international routes in 2015 and had resumed operation after it changed its policy in 2016. Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Transport (Rostransnadzor) stated that during their examination on the accident aircraft, the airliner had violated the procedure of the oil change in the gearboxes and the washing of the air starter filter.

@Shaun Gallagher: Unfortunately it’s indicative of the world we live in that it must be considered. To dismiss it and refuse to consider it as a possibility smacks of political interference and indicates it may be the real cause.

@PutinBot 5000: Fake news. The Rosatom lad’s name is Vyacheslav Pershukov Alexandrovich (b. 1958).

The guy on the plane, Ivanov, was born in ‘86.

You’ll need better sources than /r/TheDonald, brother.

I do hope the de-icing was carried out correctly pre flight.
Unfortunately many Russian pilots have a terrible reputation for skipping this vital procedure.
