"What a lovely man he was" - tributes are flowing for food critic Paolo Tullio

The much-loved star of RTE’s The Restaurant passed away yesterday aged 65.

TRIBUTES HAVE BEEN flowing in for popular tv chef Paolo Tullio who passed away yesterday aged 65.

Tullio, an Italian michelin star chef, was well-known as a warm and generous critic on RTE’s ‘The Restaurant’. He had been ill for a number of months.

He had been the Irish Independent’s main food critic since 1997 and made weekly appearances on Seán Moncrieff’s afternoon show on Newstalk, where his double act with the host was a treat for listeners.

His agent Noel Kelly told his Facebook followers that he is “missing a great friend, full of kindness and with only positive things to say of others”.

Twitter tributes have been flowing for a man who was universally loved it seems.

And finally…

Rest in peace Paolo.

I was very sad when I read about the passing of Paolo last night! I’ve no interest in cooking or food programs, but used to love listening to him on Sean Moncrieff’s show and the banter with Sean and the stories he would tell about his life. Rip Paolo!

It is with great sadness that I learn today of the passing of Signore Tullio, an erudite, passionate and soulful man. A proper gentleman who brought an aura of sunshine around with him where ever he went and was more than happy to share this positivity with anyone. I will always remember him laughing heartily on Moncrieff Show one day when a texter asked if he was related to the “Hairy Bikers”, he enjoyed that joke and I had hoped to recall it with him someday. Paolo, where ever you are I hope you have found peace and happiness, a nice glass of Elderberry Wine and that you have some ham hocks on the stove for dinner!. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. Godspeed you Paolo Tullio.
