WHILE IT’S AN incredibly popular app, Snapchat has had its fair share of security problems in recent times.

It’s slowly rectifying that and the app’s most recent update for iOS and Android adds two-factor verification to the mix.

For those unfamiliar with the term, it adds an extra layer of security to your accounts by requiring a temporary code to be entered on top of your username and password.

You can find it in settings under the heading ‘Login verification’. Once you activate it, you will receive a six-digit code via SMS which will allow you to log in.

It ensures that anyone who has your username and password would also need access to your phone number to log in, reducing the chances of someone logging in without your permission (granted, it’s a different story if someone steals your phone but that’s what lock screen passwords, fingerprint IDs and Find my Phone is for).

Once you’ve set it up, you can also create a recovery code (to store somewhere safe) in case you lose or break your phone.

Since its launch in 2011, Snapchat main demographic are teens and those in their early twenties although it’s growing in popularity with older age groups. According to research from Ipsos MRBI, 8% of 35 – 54 year olds use the app with roughly one in five using it daily.

Globally, the app has nearly 100 million daily active users and 65% of them are posting photos and videos on the app every day, according to its CEO and co-founder Evan Spiegel.
