Blue powder and 'Goodbye' note sent to office of gay rights group

Emergency services have now given the all clear.

Updated 2.45 pm

PastedImage-52197

THE ARMY BOMB disposal team have ruled out any threat after a a suspicious package was delivered to the offices of LGBT advocacy group GLEN this morning.

Emergency services were deployed to the scene on Upper Exchange Street in Dublin’s city centre with crew donning hazmat suits before entering the building.

It is understood the package was opened and blue powder was found inside, along with a one-word note which read ‘Goodbye’. It is thought the letter was personally delivered as there was no stamp.

The group indicated on Twitter that the substance was tested and is not toxic.

“The intent was to terrorise – no matter what was in the envelope,” Tiernan Brady of GLEN told TheJournal.ie.

“We’ve never had this before and the goal was to scare us and inflict terror.”

Gardaí, Dublin Fire Brigade and an army bomb disposal at the scene earlier. The Defence Forces have confirmed that the package was a hoax. A bomb disposal team arrived on scene at 1.15pm and left nearly two hours later.

Beano, you really need to stop digging. The emergency services can’t afford to take any credible threat lightly and have to respond appropriately which is why hoaxing such as this is taken so seriously as it’creates a massive waste of resources and dilutes the effectiveness of the response of the emergency services should a real emergency happen while they are responding to what turns out to be a hoax.

@Shane Kilcoyne – over 30000 people attended the Pride March in Dublin last year. I would be amazed if even 200 of the participants were dressed provocatively, even guys without shirts! If you Google ‘Pride Dublin 2014′ for images of the parade (not posed for newspapers, but of the crowds) you will see thousands of people in t-shirts and jeans. To say that Pride is full of naked people is absolute nonsense. As for twerking, it has been around for decades and was popularised by performers like Beyonce, Miley Cyrus, Destiny’s Child and others – HETEROSEXUAL performers! Do I think that the video of the child is appropriate? No, but I am not the parent of that child and I have no say in how the child is brought up. Would you have posted the link if it had been taken in their own home, or at a school or in a park? No you wouldn’t – but at a Pride parade makes it perfect fodder for you to exhibit your homophobic ignorance and blame it on the ‘gay agenda’. Well MY agenda is equality and respect and support for all law-abiding people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. What’s yours?

New York City’s Stonewall rioters of 1969 and the daring organisers of Britain’s first-ever Gay Pride parades in the early 1970s have seen their dreams of equality come true. They had a dream, those early warriors for homosexual rights, and now that dream is a reality. Let us rejoice! There is only one problem with this narrative – it is the biggest load of bunkum. It glosses over the fact that those early gay radicals were not remotely interested in getting married, or in winning equality, the only thing that today’s super-square gay campaigners and their cheerleaders go on about. The Stonewall radicals wanted liberation, not equality, and they wanted to destroy marriage, not buy into it. The Gay Liberation Front that emerged out of the Stonewall riot insisted that “complete sexual liberation for all people cannot come about unless existing social institutions are abolished”. It was pretty clear that one of the social institutions that would have to be done away with was marriage. A Gay Manifesto, an influential radical pamphlet published in 1970, described marriage as “a rotten, oppressive institution”. In Gay is Good, lesbian activist Martha Shelley’s explosive and much-loved 1972 booklet, homosexuals were described as “women and men who, from the time of our earliest memories, have been in revolt against the sex-role structure and the nuclear family structure”. As for Britain’s early Gay Pride get-togethers – they viewed marriage and the family as ”a patriarchal prison that enslaves women, gays and children”. To depict last night’s passing of the gay marriage bill as a victory for these early campaigners is a bit like saying the nuking of Hiroshima was the joyous outcome of CND marches. Writing in 2002, on the 30th anniversary of Britain’s first Gay Pride parade, Peter Tatchell said: ”There were no calls for equality; our demand was liberation. We wanted to change society, not conform to it.” So in essence, the gay marriage campaign of today, with its drab demand that homosexuals be granted equal access to the social institution of “rotten, oppressive” marriage, represents not the fulfilment of early gay radicals’ demands but the warping of them, the stomping of them into the dirt of history. http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/brendanoneill2/100201727/the-gay-radicals-of-the-past-didnt-want-equality-they-wanted-liberation-and-thought-marriage-was-oppression/

When the YES side won my first thought was that they have conformed to to society.

The government must be delighted with the YES vote

As someone who remembers the Stonewall clashes in the UK, this is very wimpy stuff. GLEN needs to grow a pair.

While you’re busy with nostalgia, it might serve you better to remember that the Stonewall riots took place in New York, not the UK.

You don’t remember them very well, then. Stonewall was a few thousand miles away from the UK!

So Jacob, perhaps you would like to explain how the violence that propogated the stonewall riots somehow makes it acceptable by any measure to send these kinds of threats and hoax attacks to any gay group? Or are GLEN just not manly enough by your estimate for treating the lives and wellbeing of their members with respect by alerting the relevant authorities?

If the person who sent this is caught what would they be charged with. could sending a note with goodbye and some harmless powder be considered a crime.
when I left work years ago I got a card with goodbye on it and a cake with candles that were lit on it should I have gotten ten firebrigades round to put the candles out in case it might be something sinister.
If anywhere else got this it would have been thrown in the bin and they would have got on with their day. But there would have been no headline in the journal then.

Depends on their motivation, whether it is a crime or not. Still should be charged with wasting the emergency services time.

It must have been to scare them for some reason – why else would they send a packet of mysterious blue powder?
