Dublin Fire Brigade ferried equipment to the Ireland to fight the fire.

DUBLIN FIRE BRIGADE have ferried firefighting equipment out to Ireland’s Eye as crews battle a gorse blaze on the island.

An Air Corps helicopter was also called in to drop water on the fire.

Access to the island has proved difficult, but crews from Dolphins Barn, Phibsborough and North Strand are currently on the island.

The gorse fire was first stopped earlier this afternoon, and is still being brought under control this evening.

Bummer Herring Gulls and Great Black Backed Gulls nesting on the ground at the moment. Fire would be catastrophic at this time for them.

They have their place in the Ecosystem. Beautiful birds. Both species actually close to threatened status in Ireland.

Any word on whether this was a natural fire or caused by human activity?

The fire started at the back of the island and could have been brought under control very quickly by requesting the assistance of one of the firefighting tugs from Dublin Port. Instead a helicopter and Dublin Fire Brigade took 3 days to bring it under control at huge expense.
