John Murray is out. Don't fret though, there's a familiar voice lined up for your mornings on RTÉ

The John Murray Show is ending and Brendan O’Connor is taking over temporarily.

RTÉ RADIO HAS announced the end of The John Murray Show but RTÉ has wasted no time in finding a temporary replacement.

Brendan O’Connor will present RTÉ Radio One’s 9am weekday slot from next month as John Murray ends his five year stint.

The John Murray Show has followed the most listened to radio show in the country, Morning Ireland.

It’s been announced this afternoon that Brendan O’Connor will be on air at 9am next month and will present that hour-long slot for the month of July.

It comes less than four weeks after O’Connor presented the last episode of RTÉ television’s The Saturday Night Show.

The Saturday evening TV slot on RTÉ One is set to be taken over by Ray D’Arcy who recently returned to the national broadcaster.

When it was announced that O’Connor’s Saturday night show was set to end, the broadcaster said that the Corkman would not be leaving Montrose completely.

An RTÉ statement says that Murray will return to RTÉ Radio 1 in the autumn in a “brand new role”.

RTÉ says the details of his new role and a long-term replacement for the current slot will be announced in due course.

Murray received particular praise in late 2013 for speaking frankly about the depression which left him unable to work for more than six months.

“It has been a pleasure and a privilege to present the show for the last five years,” Murray said in a statement this evening.

“I want to thank everyone who worked on the programme in that period but most of all I want to thank the listeners for their support and for making it all worthwhile.”

O’Connor also has a prominent slot as a front-page columnist on the front of the Sunday Independent, Ireland’s biggest selling newspaper.

I really like John Murray, he is talented, has a beautiful melodic voice , is fun to listen to and I always enjoyed the programme . I missed him when he was off . I would like to wish him all the best, and hope he has a lovely relaxed summer and I look forward to him being back in whatever role.

@john if you stop paying your TV licence fee they’ll send you to the mountjoy gulag where you’ll be liquidated through labour, and rightly so because if everybody decided to not pay the licence there’d be no rte and no Los angelus at midday and again at six, plus all d’udder. Good stuff..like

Please RTE, put Aine Lawlor in the slot. She is a hugely talented broadcaster and she has it all in spades. She is intelligent, articulate, very well informed on current affairs. But she is also personable and excellent on human interest or lighter stories without sounding patronising or like she’s dumbing down. She also happens to have a stunning radio voice. I can’t understand why she doesn’t have more profile in RTE.

I am so fed up with Irish radio. Same lads on all the time – 80% of RTE Radio One and 2FM shows are male led – see research on https://www.womenonair.ie. I really don’t like it when the same guys get slots on tv and radio. I want to hear a new female voice – someone intelligent who has lived a bit, is nice, and has a view point and half of all shows lead by women ( and not girly side kicks).
