'We are really f***ing happy about being homosexual': Thousands take to the streets for Dublin Pride

Dublin is awash with colour today – and emotion.

TENS OF THOUSANDS of people took to the streets of Dublin this afternoon to celebrate the annual LGBTQ Pride Parade.

The city was awash with colour as the smiling crowds made their way through the city centre. The traditional rainbow flags flew high above them and the parade was dotted with people wearing the now familiar ‘Yes Equality’ t-shirts and badges that became iconic symbols of the same-sex marriage referendum campaign.

Sam Boal / Photocall Ireland Sam Boal / Photocall Ireland / Photocall Ireland

And the referendum was on everyone’s minds today. For the LGBT community, today is not just a celebration of their pride, it is a celebration of all they have managed to achieve in the last year.

Deryck Fay has been coming to the parade since decriminalisation in 1993. “It’s the same kind of atmosphere but on a much bigger scale”, he told TheJournal.ie, adding that there was a real feeling of “relief and freedom”.

He attended the parade with his partner of 21 years Justin Bryan and the couple told us they are hoping to tie the knot as soon as possible, though it may be a more low key event than their friends are hoping for:

Video TheJournal.ie / YouTube

This was the first parade for Davina Staunton from Cork who described it perfectly with one word: “emotional”.

“It was brilliant. Everyone was signing and dancing, everyone on the outside was cheering as well.”

I’m actually transgender, so I’m hoping for the [gender] recognition bill, that’s supposed to happen at the end of July. Once that happens, it’s a part of my life so I’d be happy.

There were some familiar faces hanging around…

‘We are really f***ing happy about being homosexual’

As the crowds reached Merrion Square, they filtered into Pride Village where the celebration continued. Panti Bliss greeted the crowds from the big stage, receiving huge cheers that spread through the park.

I’m am marching to remind lonely, especially young, LGBT people that they are not alone that we are here, we are really f***ing happy about being homosexual and that we are ready for her to join us whenever she feels ready.

I’m parading to celebrate how much we’ve achieved and how far we have come.

Panti said the parade today, with all its fanfare, would also serve as a beacon of hope for the kinds of people who are “not as fortunate as us”, living in countries where she said this kind of event would be “unimaginable”.

sailors Hello sailors. One of them, without knowing who we were taking the photo for, asked us afterwards to "put that on The Journal". There you go lads. Michelle Hennessy / TheJournal.ie Michelle Hennessy / TheJournal.ie / TheJournal.ie

Speaking to TheJournal.ie as he made his way through the city, David Norris said the decision by the US Supreme Court to legalise same-sex marriage in all 50 states was “very good timing” but made sure to point out that “we were before America”.

Michelle Hennessy / TheJournal.ie Michelle Hennessy / TheJournal.ie / TheJournal.ie

The sun hasn’t come out yet but there’s a wonderfully colourful atmosphere. It’s by far the biggest parade that I’ve seen. The number of people on the streets is quite beyond anything we’ve had before and the number of people on the demonstration – the overwhelming majority gay but a lot of straight people in support as well. I think that’s wonderful. It’s a very, very happy day.

Like Panti, he said it was important not to forget people who are living in countries where they cannot be themselves.

“There’a whole block – the majority of the globe is still bitterly homophobic.”

The parade celebrates overcoming discrimination and serves as a memorial to those who have been killed in anti-LGBT attacks.

It’s historical origins are simple. Up until at least 2004 this was the majority view…you were told to hide away..and the parade was about ”No, we won’t hide, we’ll rub it in your face even more”…that was history.

Today though…IMO/IME it has more of a negative effect.
On str8s it just reenforces stereotypes.
Those of us who are non-stereotypical , when realizing our sexuality, look at that and think “maybe I’m not gay..I’ve nothing in common with those people they’re walking cartoons…” and it deepens their crises even more as they think “well if I am gay..they all seem to act so diff…does my whole life have to change now do i have to start taking new friends go to new clubs and bars…change my identity” this aggravates the existing crises for many, esp as the answer to that < question by some LGBT groups is "yes, you do have to change". The vast majority of non-stereotypical guys are still deep in the closet so all they see in the world is the charactatures and they think if I come out I have to change my whole life and identity..I'm not doing it…so all the general public sees is characatures too..and the stereotypes get fed even more.

Because there are still countries were people can and are attacked and/or killed for being gay or sometimes just looking ‘gay’ By countries like Ireland still having these marches it shows people in those countries there isn’t something wrong with being gay.

Jesus, such killjoys on here. We’re Irish, any reason to party. You’ll find a huge amount of people at pride that are not gay. If you don’t wanna go don’t go. I hate country music but instead of calling for it to be banned I just don’t go to country gigs. Same for Transformers flicks, but in fairness, I think they should actually be banned.

Sinead, why are you concerned about a parade in Dublin? You’re not even a Dub! In Dublin, we tend to live and let live for the most part, we don’t direct others how to live. Don’t like parades, don’t go to them! You’re very quick to comment on PDAs when it comes to LGBT community. There have been many photos of straight couples kissing on articles on the Journal and you never comment on those. You are drawn to gay stories on this site, but never have a positive thing to say about those stories. Your hypocrisy is most distasteful. Call a spade a spade, you think you don’t have issues with gay people; but as soon as a gay person kisses another or goes shirtless, you are driven to post several comments about it on every occasion. Not ONCE have you decried a heterosexual couple kissing on this site! That makes you homophobic!

I don’t care the country is full of Irish people so it’s stupid to celebrate being Irish in Ireland and even more so in other countries, I mean why should one nationality get a parade in cities like New York when others don’t? I see what you’re saying (though the Paddies day parade is really a p1ss up excuse, though this is too in a way) but my angle is how this encourages caricatures and stereotypes and the damage that does to both the perception of LGBT people by the public and (way more importantly) to the 80% of gay/bi folk not stereotypical many of whom are young vulnerable full of doubts and feeling like if they come out they have to turn into this cartoon.

Ryan, I think the main purpose of it now is to celebrate the freedom that we have achieved, to celebrate who we are and to create visibility in the city and throughout the country. It’s also in a way a tribute to those who have gone before us – those who struggled outwardly, and more sadly inwardly.

Visibility is still needed very much, even though legal equality has been achieved. There are many families in Ireland that still have an atmosphere of hostility and even hatred towards homosexuality and homosexuals. Like most families in this country, those families will also undoubtedly contain non-heterosexual members. For these people, they face unbearable loneliness, despair, self-hatred, possibly the darkest depths of depression. This kind of visibility is part of what they need to counteract that. They need to see that they are far from alone. This is especially the case when it comes to young people.

In the grand scheme of things, Ireland is an amazing place to be if you are gay. It’s one of the freest countries on Earth. There most certainly is not the same need for Gay Pride marches as there was before. It’s purpose has changed. Previously, it was to secure civil rights. Now, it’s simply to express pride and celebrate who we are. As a similar example, we have our own independent state, yet we still celebrate St Patrick’s Day more and more each year and I’m really glad we do. Celebrating who we are as individuals and as a people creates a unique sense of solidarity and boosts confidence to be oneself.

If it takes one teenage boy/girl back from the brink, then it’s all worth it.

Ugh Ryan. By that logic lets ban the Paddies Day parade and Irish pubs. Lets ban any parade that is not relevant to the majority of society. At it’s very basic level, when you go to the pub there’s always the chance of scoring with someone. Most pubs are filled with hetrosexuals. If the majority was homosexual I’d want hetro bars so I could score.

Ryan, while I get where you are coming from, I disagree with you, first of all, like Dog Standard said, by your reasoning, you could get rid of all parades and celebrations, and don’t forget, just because there is now marriage equality in Ireland, there’s still quite a few countries in the world, where being gay equals a death sentence, pride is as much about raising awareness for that as for celebrating equality and the freedom to express one’s sexuality, and even though the L, G and B of LGBT are now mostly accepted, the transgender community is still facing an uphill battle for recognition, tolerance, and equality

So, in your world, if you don’t produce a child, you are objectively disordered. You do realise that that sort of thinking only adds to the problems associated with over-population, which the UN includes as one of the most important issues facing humanity. The ultimately most responsible reaction to overpopulation is for people to have fewer or no children until we can reach a sustainable situation without causing devastation to our planet.
On a related note: It is very sad to observe that you appear to have such a limited view of the human experience.

Priests and Popes can’t reproduce because that’s the nature of their work. That doesn’t mean they don’t get turned on when they see women (i.e their body’s reaction when they see a partner of breeding merit) unless they’re gay. It’s not about having kids but if you don’t have the urge to breed with partners of the opposite sex (like we should due to evolutionary pressues taking place of millions of years) then isn’t there something wrong? I can understand some people not having kids due to financial restrictions, etc. but these people may still partake in casual sex which ultimately, is them acknowledging their healthy desire to breed.

In a ideal world Conor!, so what if some people are different?, the vast majority of gay people didn’t choose their sexuality, call it what you like maybe a genetic mutation in the human gene passed down through milleniums, but homosexuality is not some form of modern perversion its been practiced since humans became civilised.

Still plenty of us straight people to reproduce and keep the human race ticking over, god forbid some of us might might produce a gay son or daughter, who knows what the future holds for you Conor?.

Good Old Cheney campaigned against SSM in 2004, based his re-election on antigay ballot measures to get out the conservative vote and he was narrowly re-elected…then he punked the stupid evangelical fools by doing what all good conservatives do on gays./ abortion / stem cell research when it’s one of THEIR family who needs the help…suddenly become a liberal on the issue.

Now with the Supreme Court decision in the US it’s all over and none of those ballot measures mattered, bet they’re steaming.

    Enoch, I think your Top Cat, Joe, J’s Back and now E. O’Leary were textbook trolling accounts. From Kathy Sheridan in The Irish Times;

‘The placard holders are members of one big family. When challenged by a pinstriped cyclist, 21-year-old Enoch Burke takes him on. “Well, where does Aids begin?” asks Enoch, following up with HIV figures from St James’s Hospital, to “prove” that homosexuals started it. “God help you,” says the cyclist mournfully. Enoch, who declined a place in medicine at University College Galway, is one of 10 children – all with biblical names – of Sean and Martina Burke from Castlebar, Co Mayo.
His brother Isaac is in third-year science in Galway. Esther is working for her HDip. Ammi hopes to study languages. The family belong to no particular sect. “We’re just a Christian church,” says Martina.
How do she and Sean find the time to support their large family and stand all day outside Leinster House? Sean, she says, was a qualified electrician, “and does a lot of different things now”. Martina, a qualified secondary teacher, “still does private tuition” for exam students. “Of course there are a thousand other things we could be doing. I could cry coming up,” she says, “but there’s a lot of unrest in the country, and the politicians are not representing the people.”
The Bible sustains them on the three- to four-hour drive from Castlebar two or three days a week, before they stand tall with their placards for up to nine hours a day.’

Yeh they’ll have to take a break from all the heterosexual skangers going in with their p-sseed off mothers, in their school uniforms, to the free clinic for their pregnancy and STI tests after bold Nahhhalie and Geooorrrgggggiiiiina ”got de roide” from Jayo and Makkar down the lane after a few tinnies and some cider…”jaysus I don’t remember a ting haha”

The diff being that the gay who was dumb enough to do it without a condom will take his injection and go home to be cured. The heterosexual skanger will be going down to the DSP for a cheque, a house, and 18 years of payments that will easily exceed €200,000, while the homo goes back to work to pay 50% of his income in taxes to support her.

Pride marches are positive things, and Labour knew that, regardless of the overall damage they have done to society, they hope this will get something for the election.

I don’t agree with these marches , but in fairness Joey that’s kinda apples and oranges. Heterosexuality was not illegal until 1993, it was not illegal until a few weeks ago for you to marry a woman, there was not a serious debate on having a diff age of consent for sex with women, heterosexuals didn’t feel like they had to hide who they were from their friends and families, they didn’t get cops busting into their house to arrest them for sex with their girlfriends…it’s not really like with like.

I think someone’s still bitter about the referendum result. Here’s the great thing Joey, you wanna have a “Straight Pride” parade, go right on ahead, no one’s stopping you. I bet it would be *great* fun.

But hey, every day is straight pride day. You just have to look at any media, notice the massive under-representation of LGBTQ people to see that. You had centuries where gay people were forced to hide their true selves, you had centuries of their love being illegal, you had centuries of your love being presented as normal, and theirs as abnormal. You have countries all over the world where they can be imprisoned or killed for loving who they love, yet you choose to begrudge them one day?

Let’s use your “logic”. You’ve had your centuries, now would you just f*ck off?

Depending who you ask “queer” (no, dunno what it means) or “questioning”, I personally think if you’re questioning you are either in GLBorT and just don’t know which one yet, so not sure a new letter was nessicary, I mean we could really take the mick with this and start adding E for ‘experimenting’, EC for ‘experimenting – it was college afterall’, KMFWPBNG for ‘kissed male mate when p1sssed but not gay’…for the girls FL ‘fake lesbian’ or “to watch the dumbass faces on guys in clubs me and my friend kissed each other and had a good laugh”.

In some cases they’ve added an I for inter sexual, apparently the A-sexual people not into sex at all don’t get a lookin.

I hate this entire set up because it pre-supposes that I am the same as another person because they’re gay…but 90% of the Gay guys I’ve met I’ve had nothing remotely in common with them, I look totally diff, have a totally diff personality totally diff interests…it goes to this idea that ”they’re all the same – the same as (STEREOTYPE)”. Why does their have to be a community based on who we like to f__k? People have diff clubs based on their interests but an entire social community based on ONE aspect of yourself? To me that’s letting just one part of you consume and define your entire identity…there is far more to me than who I sleep with.

I can’t understand why people decide what they think on issues like this with such illogic.
I often notice on here people say and get big thumbs up for real populist nonsense that on the surface seems like it makes sense but then if you actually stop and think about it for a second it’s totally illogical, like the suggestion the other day to nuke the middle east to deal with terrorism.

It does not really cost anything to get people together and march down a street, and the flags and signs cost about 30cents each to make, that’s hardly going to end child poverty.
You could say that about the Paddies day parade…hell why not all beat ourselves with sticks with a rusty nail in it all weekend instead of going to pubs, clubs , parks with the kids and put the money we were going to spend on ice cream for the kids and drink for ourselves and what not into the charity box.

Poor people in the 3rd world shouldn’t have kids. These kids have to live short lives of famine, disease, violence, etc. just because the parents were selfish enough to have kids. (If these problems were solved by say, addressing corruption or slowing down population growth in these places then obviously they would be able to have kids but not in their current circumstances sadly) It really isn’t our fault that their is poverty around the world so I don’t see why it should concern us. In saying that, I think excessive, self-indulgent parades are a bad use of money and they divert traffic, etc. I don’t think something as flippant as sexuality merits such needless celebration.

They want equal right and freedoms but once that’s in place you can shut your mouth and never have a differing opinion again. Can you imagine the uproar if the RC church had a Catholic Pride day where people of the RC faith (which I am not) filled the city with marches, prayers, statues of holy Mary and so on??? Those who think it could happen just look at the reaction RTE are getting by trying to look at the format of something as small as the angelus. Equality my hole!!

Catholics celebrate their religion every Sunday in every village, town and city all over the world. They even show their celebrations on TV.

Ireland is the last place that should have a catholic Pride Day after all of the child abuse, child-trafficking, forced labour and imprisonment of women, that would be like Armenians having a parade to celebrate Turkish History.

As most child abuse happens in the family, by that reasoning family fun days shouldn’t be allowed. The forced labour and imprisonment happened as the result of being a state proxy, so no state celebrations.

The fundamental flaw in that apologist line of more abuse happening in the family is that a massive organisation isn’t covering it up and moving the abuser on to other families so they can abuse even more children. The forced labour and imprisonment happened as a result of the catholic cults dogmas and doctrines, but let’s just pretend they’re completely innocent.

I’m sure most child abuse in families was covered up and probably still is. The problem with your response to any mention of the Catholic Church is the now knee jerk gratuitous mud slinging.

I am not a religious person or part of any church but I’m sure that there have been many many more priests and nuns and lay people did an awful lot more good that you lot give them credit for.

It has become very fashionable to slip into the name calling by so many that you all sound like echoes of each other. No thinking necessary.

The ‘mud slinging’ wouldn’t happen if those that committed the heinous acts were brought to justice. They weren’t and likely won’t be. Then they profess to know what’s best for children and what is moral. Yet they don’t encourage justice for their own transgressions…

They haven’t gone away you know. Don’t worry they’ll fine something to march againts. You got your rights to be like everyone else now could you all fu.k off and give the rest of us a break on about milking it. Didn’t see the pr.ck on TV who said the water protest was bad for business and keeps people away from the city centre. Better not offend the gays.

Dublin Pride today brought circa 60k (conservatively) into the city.

They all had to stay somewhere, eat somewhere, drink somewhere, travel to Dublin from somewhere, use the LUAS, make small purchases to sustain them during the day etc.

Organisers use serious amounts of stationery for the Pride Guide, signs for the contingents, printouts/handouts etc.

Examples; I bought my newspaper in Dublin today, I went for breakfast in a hotel nearby to Parnell Sq. I had the cunions and phey in a restaurant/take-away on the way home.

The person I was with? Bought phone credit, cigarettes, food etc. all up in Dublin too.

Ordinarily this money would’ve been spent elsewhere; multiply this by the many marchers who come from outside of Dublin and the value to the Dublin economy is huge.

    So Pride is a fantastic boon to the local and to a lesser extent economy;

in there yesterday never seen anything like it the behaviour was disgusting lesbian couples brawling in the streets, lewd behaviour in doorways in front of young people and kids no lie a two gay men wer performing sex acts on each other in the lane beside grogans a man asked them to stop and they abused him then called a group of angry lesbian and gay men out of the pub the lesbian women started punching the middle ages man who complained he started running and got a bottle thrown at him and called a bigot . I made myself scarce after that trying to get out of the cess pit of temple bar.
