@John Harkin: The difference could be put down to the tax credit which most people I’d imagine don’t even understand. The personal & paye tax credits is equivalent to a 0% tax rate on the first €16,500 of your income (20%*16500=3300). Any government really should front end that system before an election. When Eddie Hobbs suggested tidying it up, they practically called him an alchemist.

There’s a reason why a minister for health from every party across the political spectrum has failed to properly reform the service over the past 30-40 years and it’s not down to lack of trying or lack of budget. @GrumpyAulFella: too simplistic to lay blame for lack of reform at unions – no doubt there are challenges – but something like the health administrators hired 16% increase in management roles in HSE – highly paid roles on 100k level – nothing to do with union practices – simply adding layers of additional admin into an inefficient overly administrative organisation – outcome are not improving – and by the way productivity gains are part of wage agreements as are improving the organisations which unions sign up to – so you are quite wrong to say nothing can be reformed – they reformed how revenue is collected to pretty efficient levels without ‘union’ issues -

So effectively they are perfectly staffed numbers wise pre-covid, and staff are relatively well paid. They use covid to let loads go and then offer the same roles on lower wage and horrible conditions – the 20 hours you mention and then months later say – ‘there’s not a lot we can do when we can’t get the staff…..’

@Richard Carroll: I agree it is not good enough but why fix it as “we are the laughing stock on Europe”. Why not fix it as it should work regardless of who is watching and because it will have a negative impact on the tourism and businesses in Ireland. Takes about 4 minutes to get through security in Knock, we leave our house (40 mins away) 1.5 hours before the flight. Why cant Dublin replicate that on a larger scale?

@Sarah Lou: Its widely reported that this is a staffing issue. There weren’t massive queues back in the peak of the summer of 2019 with 20% more traffic…… Knock had 8 scheduled departures today all spaced out. Dublin had 340ish. Increasing Dublins security infrastructure to 40 times that of Knock isnt feasable…… The main problem time at Dublin is the morning departure rush. There were 67 departures between 6-8 in Dublin this morning, 20% of total departures. A rough estimate of 150 per flight is over 10,000 people in 2hrs vs a flight here and there at Knock. Other times of the day at Dublin you can sail through security in less than 10mins, particularly in T2.

@Heisen berg1: believe it or not many of us are not from the Dublin area but have no choice but to fly out of Dublin. Many of us would much prefer to fly out of Shannon or Cork or Knock. Wouldn’t it greatly help if there was a quota of certain routes operated by each airline if they want to operate from Dublin too? There’d be less queues at the airport, less parking spaces filled up, less traffic on the M50, more jobs spread evenly throughout the different airports and every side of the country would have a better choice and create better competition.

I’m at the gate now, waIting to board a flight. Contrary to what is being said though, the security screening system is working OK, more or less. The biggest problem seems to be the collapse of confidence in rhe system, causing people to arrive too early. I was talking to some people in the queue and they were there at 6.00 for a midday flight.
No sign of any suits during my one hour and forty minute journey through the departures area. I can understand that they want to avoid the wrath of customers and hard-pressed staff, but a few hours on the floor might teach them something.

Imagine flights at 8, 9, 10 and 11am. If passengers arrive 2 hours before their flight then the check-in etc will be busy at 6,.7, 8 and 9am. But now imagine that ALL passengers arrive at airport between 6 and 7am. You have ’4 hours worth ‘ of queueing squeezed into 1 hour. An impossible situation, so many people for the 8 and 9 flights will miss their flight. Solution? Separate queues for different time slots. 8am flightd queue here, 9am flights queue there, 10am flights queue somewhere else, so the people for the earlier flights get seen and processed first.

    You cannot completely blame DAA.
At the moment every single airport in Europe is experiencing the same delays. The main reasons for this is that they cannot get enough staff to man the positions needed for smooth Transit through the airport.
Lots of sectors in Ireland at the moment are experiencing the same issues with no staff willing to work even though I think they are available. I think if we could sort this issue out things would run much better. So while the airport is at fault there is other issues going on that are causing these problems as well.

So despite all these talks and politicians having their day in the Dail doin speeches, there is nothing in place to change a thing. Theres a staff shortage becsuse they sacked everyone instead of putting them on PUP. They did this so when they had to refill those jobs they would do so with lower salaries. Hence todays €13ph advertised positions. The CEO did the same at Morrisons. Some actual journalism at “the journal” would be great.

I assume some of this number were accommodated and have gone on their merry way so less than 1000 people inconvenienced and the DAA needs to report by tomorrow. @The world outside the M50: sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder when it comes to the capital. I called it the capital because it is the capital. It’s the metropolitan and population centre of the country. Why are the main airports around Europe centred in the capital cities? Paying a ridiculous price for a house in Dublin must come with some benefits after-all, jobs, education, transport, retail, hospitality hubs. This is what happens in population centres. Dragging people out of a populous area with a major European international airport on their doorstep to drive 3hrs to somewhere else to catch a €200 return flight to Lanzarote isn’t going to work.

The busiest airline route in Europe is Dublin London. Unfortunately if you don’t live in the capital city then your flight needs won’t be as well served and you may have to travel longer to get to your departure point. Same as every other country.

@GrumpyAulFella: the Dublin to London route is the busiest because they made it the busiest by limiting peoples options. It’s very much the case of all the eggs in one basket and now they are paying the price. If a census was done in the morning i think you would find that a lot of people would prefer to fly out of places other than Dublin. The demand is there to fly from Shannon, Cork and Knock but the options aren’t and as long as the DAA have the monopoly it will remain like that.

The only way this can be fixed is to put all the airport authorities under one umbrella organisation, or put it under the directives of the IAA so that no airport cannot take prioritiy over the others, like the DAA currently are.

It comes down to greed. When times were tough during the pandemic the DAA cut staff instead of leaving them on PUP most workers in the airport are contractors from facilities companies who’s contracts were reduced by the DAA during the pandemic. This in turn had a knock on effect and many people were let go. Instead of starting a recruitment drive 18 months ago it was left till the last minute because of costs. They knew how long it would take to recruit and train and vet new members. They also knew how many people had booked holidays last year to fly this year and dud nothing about it. No management lost there jobs during the pandemic only the most important people lost there jobs. Those who actually do the work. Time for heads to role. Army should take up role of management

Look at the money the DAA will lose if the common sense approach is taken and the IAA stepped in and told them to move some of these flights to Shannon or Knock. It’s not just a case of moving them if needed, otherwise, the problem will reoccur next week. The cure is the permanent rerouting of these flights and not allowing them tovaccept new ones…maybe even giving Shannon or Knock the priority that Dublin currently enjoys.

Did you know that many children who use wheelchairs are suffering in pain everyday because they’ve outgrown their wheelchairs but can’t get new ones? Thousands of children are getting sicker everyday while on years long wait lists for therapies, procedures and surgeries? The government won’t tolerate these airport delays but they will tolerate neglect of sick and disabled Irish children by the HSE. Please support the FUSS protests on June 11th. Absenteeism was mentioned this morning on RTE- “the practice of regularly staying away from work or school without good reason.”
    - I wonder did the match the previous evening play a part?

The worst of it all was the ground staff. Yelling at passengers like sheep. Move, move, move….. Like an American Bootcamp. No please, no politeness, no courtesy. Not to anybody. Families, kids, elderly….. Where did DAA finds those employees? Were they bouncers in some drug riddled bars in Dublin before? This filthy airport has become a national disgrace. Did you ever compare it to any other capital airport in Europe?

Just as a matter of interest who covers the cost of all those missed flights and accommodation?

Just had a quick look, between now and November 1st, there are 42 destinations being served from Cork, other than long haul etc, if someone can’t find a holiday destination in that choice, I give up. Twenty five mins from carpark to airside !! But don’t all come at once, we don’t want Cork turning into the disaster that is Dublin Airport.

    https://www.thesun.ie/news/8870774/dublin-airport-baggage-handlers-lufthansa/
We boarded the flight after a delay of 1.5 hours. After a other hour no bagage was loaded. After another hour the copilot was sent out onto the tarmac to see if a bagage handler could be found. Another 45 min later the plane was loaded and ready to go. Then there was no pushback vehicle. Took another half until that was solved. Then our departure slot was gone. Another 25 min. Arrived in Frankfurt 4.5 h late and earned 400 Euros as per EU passenger rights :-) great

So glad we are flying out of Cork for our holidays. You can show up, get through security and relax before your flight rather than fighting for your life. What a nightmare. Post- Covid staffing is not going well it seems….and how many who are working in that nightmare situation in Dublin are going to want to stay on as they deal with the abuse of irate travellers. No thanks.
