These are the jobs with the brightest futures in Ireland right now

But there are also skills that can help you in almost any career.

WHILE THE RECESSION wreaked havoc across Ireland’s workforce, some jobs have bounced back far better than the rest.

From niche careers like butchers and de-boners to broad categories like engineers, many are defying a jobless rate still hovering at just under 10%.

And as the country’s export industries begin to fire again and tech companies continue to soak up any the available talent, some sectors are already feeling the pinch of skills shortages.

According to the latest skills report produced by Solas for the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs, there were problems in getting good workers in industries from the ICT sector to transport and logistics.

The group’s chair, Una Halligan, told TheJournal.ie that as the economy picked up, the gap between industry needs and the skills available was becoming bigger in several fields – particularly those linked to major export sectors.

Employers are looking for people with the abilities to trade internationally – and the big issue there is a lack of foreign-language skills,” she said.

European languages like German and French were in high demand, but there was also an appetite for languages such as Chinese to smooth access to emerging markets.

Everyone needs IT

Halligan also said the need for IT abilities was being felt in almost all industries, with experience in fields like data analysis and online security in demand everywhere from retailers to shipping companies.

Meanwhile with a boom in the number of visiting tourists, the hospitality sector was also starting experience shortfalls for skilled trades like chefs.

The positive thing about that industry is that the jobs are across the board – even in regions where they have difficulty encouraging manufacturing or industry,” Halligan said.

These are three of the careers which, according to the report, have some of the brightest futures on the current trends:

1. Engineers

Engineer UCD engineering students Myles Butler and Niall Henry Leon Farrell / Photocall Ireland Leon Farrell / Photocall Ireland / Photocall Ireland

Yearly jobs growth (average, 2009-14): 6.5%

Unemployment rate (end-2014): 5.1%

Between 2009 and 2014, the rate of jobs growth for engineers was the highest of any broad employment category as the sector added about 6,000 extra workers. Meanwhile unemployment sits at about half the national average.

The growth has come as part of a shift towards high-end manufacturing and design jobs in the country, as low-skilled work has been increasingly sent to eastern Europe and Asia.

2. IT professionals

Zoo Dublin's Career Zoo last September Sam Boal / Photocall Ireland Sam Boal / Photocall Ireland / Photocall Ireland

Yearly jobs growth: 4.1%

Unemployment rate: 3%

Another fast-growing category, the number of IT jobs in Ireland has gone up faster than most other sectors, while the jobless rate is below that considered to represent full employment.

Those in IT and communications jobs are also the workers who, on average, have enjoyed the biggest increase in earnings over the past four years.

Pay in the sector has gone up 15% over the past four years at the same time that average earnings across the board have stayed flat.

3. Scientists and lab technicians

Mater Inside the Mater Hospital, where a new technology centre was launched in May Sasko Lazarov / Photocall Ireland Sasko Lazarov / Photocall Ireland / Photocall Ireland

Yearly jobs growth: 0.3%

Unemployment rate: 5%

While a relatively small cohort of the total workforce, natural scientists and lab technicians are crucial to some of Ireland’s biggest export sectors like pharmaceuticals, medical technology and food processing.

These industries were expected to do well in the medium term and a general push towards high-value activity was predicted to further drive up the need for science skills.

Thank you Cristiana for publishing the list. Anyone out there desperately seeking pay rises, being told how much we can’t afford them, should print off that list and have it by the front door for the next election, …. which could be anytime.

@canuckandgo: Apple have €200 billion in reserves which coincidentally is the same size as Ireland’s national debt. Our government is of course fighting tooth and nail so that Apple gets to keep all of the money including the €19 billion in dodged taxes and interest owed to Ireland. As explained, we have an establishment political class which serves the capitalist elite at the expense of the majority working class.

Or maybe take a look at NAMA presiding over a vast firesale of land and property assets at knockdown prices to the international vultures masquerading as charities while a domestic homeless epidemic rages. It’s a feeding frenzy for the speculative sharks and the blood in the water as ever is that of the working class while paid cheerleaders like yourself squawk approval from the sidelines.

Maybe you missed the part where capitalsim has produced the obscene inequality where 62 individuals now hold the same wealth as the poorest half of the globes population, 3500 million people who live and die in misery and poverty. And capitalsim is not here to stay as it’s internal contradictions means that it ultimately cannibalises the foundations which sustain it most particularly the working class.

The normally get same % pay increases as more junior staff.
To be fair the civil servants at grade TD,s are linked to should also be asked to refuse this pay rise

My apologies I meant a monthly pay increase of €300. And of course this doesn’t include their allowances. There is no way to justify this pay increase. We are in the middle of a housing crisis with rent rates through the roof. Hospitals overflowing with people on trolleys and serious delays in treatment. And where is our health minister? Don’t worry though he found time to attend the Dail to vote for the pay increase for himself. Insurance costs spiralling out of control with no Government intervention and our legal system leaving the law abiding citizens of this country at the mercy of the criminals while they laugh in our faces and gather their benefits that we pay for. This Government are a disgrace! They should worry about actually doing their jobs rather than raking in more cash for themselves.

Both me and my wife work 30+ hours a week and can’t afford to pay rent and save for a mortgage at same time. 2 cars on the road that are too expensive to run yet are needed because we had to move out to the countryside in order to afford rent. We would love to have kids but it’s impossible with rising costs of everything. Yet these leaches that do fcuk all in my opinion continue to tell each other how well they do and give themselves huge pay rises.

Can somebody please explain to me why TDs think they are worth their extortionate salaries? I just can’t wrap my head around how they can justify their salaries in any way shape or form considering the state the country is in and they being the ones responsible for it.

They are on an average of 87k after this payrise excluding expenses I presume, and just for comparison, the starting salary for a member of the Gardaí is on 23k, increasing to 42k after 8 years of service etc. (google told me this, apologies if it’s wrong). Gardaí put their lives on the line every single day for the public and TDs take 3 month’s holidays 2 weeks after a general election?! I just can’t understand how their pay is justified.

What? The TD’s are getting 70c, while those on minimum wage are getting 400 euro.

See what I did there? I used the after tax per HOUR figure for the TD’s and the total ANNUAL amount for the minimum wage. I did it to distort the truth beyond all recognition to make my point, just like you did when you contrasted an annual amount with an hourly one, as though you were comparing apples with apples.

The only difference is that my description is more accurate as at least I am comparing 1 year views, where you are using different timelines to further exaggerate your fiction.

Or if you want to take a longer term view, let’s go back to the peak. How much was the minimum wage reduced by when the crisis hit (answer, temporarily reduced by FF until FG increased it is one of their first actions in government), and by how much were public servants pay cut ( answer they actually were cut).

I don’t disagree that they are paid enough already, but please try to stay somewhere within the realms of reality when you are having a rant.

It was only the other day A certain TD was on to the news for court proceedings relating to unpaid taxes and debt and it disgusting to see his name on the list approving himself a pay rise while shafting the tax payer with one hand and having the gall to line his pockets with the other . Classic Sinn Fein, vote against a pay rise, when your own party in government has voted to themselves 7 pay rises in votes since 2011. Then take the money and continue to donate the proceeds of the €50,000 of salary over the €39,500 gross salary you receive yourself. The 23 SF TDs will donate over €1m per year to their party and they have the audacity to complain about others taking a €1,275 after tax per year pay increase for 2 years.
If they were serious about this they would have written a letter to the payroll section asking for the increase not to be given to their TDs not sought the limelight of being anti-pay rise, they are shameless hypocrites.
