THERE HAS BEEN widespread condemnation of racist graffiti sprayed on the front of a family home in Dublin.
The family – a mother and two children – have moved out of the house on Lealand Avenue in Clondalkin after two men painted the words ‘blacks out’ across their front window last Tuesday night.
The woman’s car tyres had been slashed on two separate occasions in the week leading up to the incident.
Local residents yesterday painted over the graffiti in a show of support for the family.
Community members also expressed solidarity with their neighbours in a meeting held over the weekend.
‘Sickened’
Local People Before Profit councillor Gino Kenny, who helped to organise the meeting and clean-up, told TheJournal.ie the family had been living in the area for six years.
It’s repulsive. People here are sickened. There’s been a big response from neighbours saying this won’t be tolerated – a family won’t be put out of this community because of the colour of their skin.
He said that the children’s mother is a popular lady who has been left traumatised by the attack.
“I’m not sure if she’s ever going to come back,” Kenny said.
Speaking this morning on Newstalk’s The Pat Kenny Show, the woman said she was at a loss to explain why her home was targeted.
Everybody is trying to not let me go, but I have to go because of my children. I don’t know who is doing this.
TD Robert Dowds said he was disgusted at a hate crime like this being inflicted on an innocent woman and her children, describing the people responsible as “thugs”.
“I attended a street meeting and was incredibly impressed with the community’s solidarity with the victim. The residents who came out to show their support for the victim are the decent, compassionate, and genuine face of our community,” he said in a statement.
Gardaí at Clondalkin are investigating the incident and have appealed for information.

There are 100,000 irish people on the social housing waiting list. My guess would be that these people are not happy to see a migrant getting housed ahead of them. I’m not condoning this despicable act, but social housing is a problem and is going to become a bigger problem as more migrants who don’t work enter the country with their families. Expect more of this.
people need to stop picking on the most vulnerable helpless members of our society, ie, the disabled, gay people, the old, and sick, and yes migrants, the people should be organized and direct their anger against the people who hold the purse strings here and that’s the government, it’s policy here not to prioritize housing and homelessness and this has been the case for years.

I live in this part of Clondalkin (I’m not going to narrow down my identity for anyone for reasons which will be obvious). I’m white and Irish. My wife was Canadian and white. We moved in October 2006. From spring 2007 to summer 2009, we experienced almost 200 incidents of attacks on our apartment, attempted attacks on ourselves, the vilest threats and insults, repeated threats against our two dogs from local pre-teens, teenagers and young adults of both sexes. My apartment is protected by several security systems which have prevented thousands of euros worth of damage. I’m not going to list every kind of incident I’ve exprienced. There never was a single reason for any of this beyond it was in the nature of the locals to do this based on the apparent believe that I’m American (their word for me – the least disgusting term they called me). No excuses, no justifications, no defense. Anyone in the comments here who has even suggest this family were targeted (as mine was) for anything resembling any possible legitimate reason…..I am ashamed of you. I have to state as well that the level of support, understanding and concern I received during all of this from neighbours, people I knew, etc was seriously inadequate. A polish family in the same area as this black family were also targeted and terrorised and had to return to Poland in 2014. There was another family in a nearby estate (I didn’t know their nationality/ethnicity) were also targeted.

You move in to one territory where theres already shortage, poverty, expect resistance, fighting for zones, land. Mike, this country was sustained for a very long period by the “remittances” of the Irish working in Britain and America during the late forties and the fifties( and probably way beyond that).. My parents were forced to emigrate merely to eat. The likes of you have never known privation. I accused you of derailing the discussion about the problem of racism in Ireland by going off on an unrelated tangent about immigration reform when there is absolutely nothing in the article or anywhere else to suggest that this woman was an immigrant (either legal or otherwise). Rashers, Irish are the same race as British and despite history are culturally more similar to the British than most other Europeans. Irish blended in well and most Irish got on there, worked hard and built up Britain. How do you know what privations a person has been through or is going through simply on their comment? Fact is Irish and other Europeans are same race and similar cultures, they didn’t take over Britain or change it from being non-British. There is no comparison with people of same race and similar culture going to each others countries and with different races and cultures coming to Europe.

Describe racism?? I have hardworking decent friends that are Asian and black, I also know a few traveler family’s who are very honest hard working decent people. But I also know a ton who are not, respect is earned not given. Look at Andy Lee , no one cares that he comes from a traveler family because he is a decent guy, a great role model and respects people and in turn people love him and are very happy for him to represent Limerick and Ireland.

Please show me where I attempted to label all Irish as racist. Scroll back up through the comments, they came out of the woodwork and there are buckets of people claiming that Ireland does not have racism, which is what I said. Oodles of the saying that it doesn’t exist here, and it’s all just liberal, lefty nonsense.
How do I define racism? Spray painting “Blacks out” on a family home seems a pretty good definition. So there’s your proof that racism does exist in Ireland. I never claimed all Irish are racist, but we do have them, and attempting to gloss over that reality by pretending that it doesn’t exist or by pretending its roots lie elsewhere won’t accomplish anything.
@Bryan Kelly. Ireland has always been a racist country. I regret to say my own father was one – that’s how I learned to recognize it. Racism exists in every country and society in the world and appears to be part of the human condition. It is for us countries who claim to be “civilized and modern” to lead the way in the fight against such thinking and someday it may pass away. At least, that has to be the hope.

There are racists in Ireland, but I don’t think we have a problem like they have in the US. The racists in this country don’t even know why they hate black people, so the hate is based on complete and utter stupidity. US racism is based on ignorance and stereotyping.

Identity Ireland must be very proud of their work. They even spelt Black correctly.
The truth is a lot of Irish people are racist. They act subtle about it and do it indirectly but it’s so obvious. Many ignorant Irish people use the justification ” they’re living off us and taking our social welfare” but to be honest you Irish people don’t have a clue. Do you know how hard it is to get a job in Ireland as a foreigner? You are judged by your name and aren’t even considered for a job you’re well qualified for why? Because your skin pigments make your a second class citizen. I work 7 days a week Monday to Friday full time (9-5) and part time Saturday and Sunday. I practically work for peanuts anyway why? Because my skin color prevents me from getting the promotions I deserve in the work place . “Sure we’ll just make Niamh the manager can’t have one of them in charge” . I pay a lot of taxes and what do I get? Racist comments and abuse from Irish people who have nothing better to dothan sit around and collect social welfare. IIt’s disgusting that I get my car vandalized and the actual gardai who deal with me are racist themselves ” if you’re not happy here move back to your own country”. Still think its easy being a foreigner in Ireland? All the abuse we get and some ignorant Irish people can still have the nerve to open their mouths to say “they’re living off our government”. No the government is living off us and to be honest the foreign workforce is what is holding the Irish economy up. Maybe we’d be a bit more friendly if you actually gave us a chance and treated us foreigners as humans not like savages. We have rights too. Stop racism in Ireland. Break the silence
