ROAD USERS IN Mayo will have a nagging reminder to urge them not to fall asleep at the wheel over the bank holiday weekend.

The county council has called on Mrs Doyle, the Craggy Island parochial house keeper for support in keeping drivers awake.

The council has erected a number of cardboard cut-outs of Pauline McLynn’s character to remind road users to take a break. McLynn herself has given the “Go On, Go On, Take A Break” campaign her approval

Recent figures released by the gardai and RSA show that over the past five years, 12 people have died and 27 people have been seriously injured on Irish roads over the August Bank holiday weekend.

Road signs of Mrs Doyle will be erected around the county which will have road safety slogans on them in an effort to remind drivers to freshen up by taking a break and to think about the consequences of driving tired.

Mayo’s Road Safety Officer Noel Gibbons said the August bank holiday weekend is by far one of the busiest and unfortunately the deadliest weekends on the roads.

“Using the roads is one of the most dangerous thing we do everyday, and people do so in a fashion that comes as second nature to them.You can’t under estimate the importance of stopping for a break for a cup of tea or coffee,as Mrs Doyle would say go on go have a cup of tea.”
