300 new jobs as Tipperary plant that lay vacant for 4 years to reopen

Amneal Pharmaceuticals has taken over the Johnson & Johnson facility.

A NEW OCCUPIER has been found for the former Johnson & Johnson plant in Cashel, bringing up to 300 new jobs to Tipperary.

Amneal Pharmaceuticals bought the 200,000-square-foot facility with plans to manufacture inhalers and other generic, specialty medicines.

When the factory is fully operational, the company said it will require between 250 and 300 staff.

The Johnson & Johnson building lay vacant for about four years before it was acquired by Singapore-based investment firm Solidus earlier this year.

Amneal then worked with IDA Ireland to purchase it from the new owners.

Jobs Minister Richard Bruton noted that the region has been blighted by unemployment but claimed that in the past three years the South East “has seen the fastest rate of jobs growth in the country”.

IDA chief Martin Shanahan echoed the sentiment, noting that regional development is a “core part” of the agency’s strategy.

“That Amneal has chosen to locate in a facility that had been occupied previously is especially pleasing and is a credit to the IDA executives who are advertising ready-to-go sites just like this in boardrooms across the world on a daily basis,” he said in a statement this morning.

Local politicians Minister Alan Kelly and junior minister Tom Hayes also welcomed the development in their county, praising the town, its workforce and infrastructure.

What a childish comment. Do you want salt & vinegar for that chip on your shoulder? Employment outside urban areas reduces the demand for housing in built up areas. It also brings much needed consumer spending into rural towns allowing local business to grow creating further employment. More jobs, more tax, lower rents & mortgage costs benefits us all, urban and rural.

Cain I have a job and I don’t live in Dublin. To say I have a chip on my shoulder completely misses the point. The whole reason jobs are more available are for a few simple reasons, location and the availability of quality trained technically proficient staff which simple don’t most rural areas. I live in a rural area where the house prices are and always have been through the roof. I didn’t say it wasn’t a good thing so you can dismount your soapbox. everything a few jobs are announced you will get a few who still aren’t happy. Simply put if the job won’t come to you then you go to the job. You sound an awful lot like a politician. lower taxes ??? pffft

Super news. Amneal is one of the biggest drugs manufacturers in the US and Europe. Massive vote of confidence for the pharma industry here. Well done Martin and the IDA guys yet again.

That factory was kept going with a skeleton staff all along – i hope they all get permanent jobs with the new company.

Don’t be so negative all the time MK, rejoice in the jobs, especially as this doesn’t have the “in the next three years” attachment of doom ring to it :) surly no-one can go against a (for a change) definitely positive job front announcement, if they do, back to be and get out the other side would be a suggestion.

Hi IsThe. Glad my absence was noted.

In reality, I’m still scratching my head as to why people, who so vehemently opposed paying for water (“I already pay”….”Not a penny Enda Kenny”….yada yada yada), are now celebrating the fact that they will have to pay a multiple of that, through taxation.

Like I kept saying, you’ll pay one way or another, but in this case a much higher amount.

    Some victory.

Fantastic news. I have seen young people up and leave Tipp, heading to Dublin, Galway, Cork and Limerick. It’s depressing when the youth is drained away, leaving a high percentage of pensioners.

Don’t forget that there’s a knock on effect when you have:
    A manufacturing facility (materials, transport)
Lots of workers with cash to spend. (services)

The more often we read the words; ‘Made in Ireland’ the better.

Liam i agree 100% our local td’s are only point scoring of each other now as Tom Hayes said earlier in the year that the cashel site was sold to an american investor turns out he was telling porkies bet kelly will take all the credit for today’s announcement but one thing is for sure Tipperary town really is suffering and the local politicians don’t want to know about it.

can’t have everything John. Also, the plant has been vacant for 4 years, i doubt they will be able to walk straight in and start working. maybe some refurb work? also 300 jobs means more money in the town for shops, cafes and restaurants.

Yes John, after all, we need is more empty factories, it’s good we can use the ones we have (bad we have them) and it also means the lads can get to work quicker instead of waiting a couple of years. Also, do you suppose the work would go there if they had to start from scratch and invest heavily on building. besides, it’s housing we need to be building, we already have empty factories, maybe if there was housing nearby it would be easier to populate these factories and areas.

It is great News for Tipp and Cashel! However, where do the expect the 250-350 and families to live as there are only 7 rental properties and the 19 that were for sale have all been sold.

I’d imagine the villages and rural hinterland around Cashel will see an influx of new people renting there if the town cannot provide enough workforce.

Tipperary Town, Clonmel, Thurles and Cahir, all within 30 mins drive of Cashel, so that’s hardly a difficult commute if you live that region (offer that to someone living in the Dublin Commuter belt?).

There’d be the attraction of bring able to purchase family accommodation at comparatively lower prices to that in Dublin or Cork as well. And then there’s the potential for support services (shops, resuaurants, etc) and supply-businesses to the Plant that will also possibly grow from these new jobs. Great news for the region and general confidence.
