Scientists have been studying the link between stress and junk food

Why a challenging meeting can lead you to reach for chocolates or sweets…

STRESS CAN TOTALLY derail a whole diet plan by impairing our self-control, researchers have found.

A challenging meeting or an upset customer could lead you to reach for chocolate or sweets later in the day, a study which appeared in the journal Neuron this week revealed.

Lead author Silvia Maier, of the University of Zurich’s Laboratory for Social and Neural Systems Research says that the brain is sensitive to upsets.

Self-control abilities are sensitive to perturbations at several points within [the brain], and optimal self-control requires a precise balance of input from multiple brain regions rather than a simple on/off switch.

She emphasised that much work still remains, however, to fully understand the mechanisms involved.

In the study, 29 participants underwent a treatment known to induce moderate stress in the laboratory before they were asked to choose between two food options. An additional 22 participants did not undergo the treatment, which involved being observed and evaluated by the experimenter while immersing a hand in an ice water bath for three minutes, before choosing between the food options.

All of the participants who were selected for the study were making an effort to maintain a healthy lifestyle, so the study presented them with a conflict between eating a very tasty but unhealthy item and one that is healthy but less tasty.

The scientists found that when individuals chose between different food options after having experienced the stressful ice bath treatment, they overweighed food taste attributes and were more likely to choose an unhealthy food compared with people who were not stressed.

@matthew The exact text is “The excise duty of a pint of beer or cider, and a standard measure of spirits is being increased by 10 cent (including VAT)..” so from what I can tell it should just be exactly 10 cents.

Anyway, my point was that bars usually take these opportunities to raise their own prices. Anecdotally speaking there was a large price increase last Christmas after the budget by pubs and bars in Dublin city centre especially.

Taxing wine by the bottle is regressive, i.e , its more expensive if you’re poor. For example someone who drinks a 5 euro bottle will pay 10% tax whereas the quaffer of a 20 euro bottle will end up paying 2.5% tax. Tax on wine should be charged as a percentage not by the bottle.

This will only increase in the sale of illegally imported cigarette market.

How about using the money generated by taxes to pay for medication and treatments to get people to stop smoking.

Why not decrease the VAT on Nicorettes and other such products?

Just another way of taking money out of peoples pockets and in this case those that are addicted to that horrible drug.

A smoker who has that horrible addiction would have spent some 173,000 euro over a 50 year period – most of that in taxes.

For all the talk of health, most governments are ambivalent about reducing smoking.

It’s a massive tax earner. And no, improved health as a result of less smoking would not balance out the reduction in tax take if they actually succeeded in reducing smoking. People may live longer but will eventually die of something, so are just a deferred cost to the health service, and while they live will need pensions and housing and other benefits that are a cost to the state.

If you were running a country had no morals at all you’d ideally want people to shoot people the morning of the day they retire. Healthy people who live to be very old are a terrible drain on resources.

Marshall, you may be right. However, increasing taxes on alcohol will not stop any of these issues from happening. The best example are the illegal drugs: are there no problems associated with them, just because they are illegal?

This is what will happen: more people will drink at home, will buy cheaper products, will go for poor quality, will make their own alcohol, and smuggling will flourish. This, in turn, will put greater pressure on the health services, since you cannot control the quality of smuggled or home made products.

The only viable solutions are educating the people, making them aware of the problems linked to alcohol consumption, and changing the culture of binge drinking.

So in 12 months €1.50 has been added to the existing tax on a price of a bottle of wine. Why is the extra tax added to all wine where prices vary widely? €1.50 on a bottle of wine that’s only €5 and the same in a bottle that’s €20. If I could afford the more expensive wine I’d buy it, not fair!

Morons! Why did they not put cigarettes up much more? It is a completely toxic, poisonous product that is far too available to young people to start smoking in their teens – a horrible and cynical business – they need to put it up so high that it is not affordable for teenagers to start smoking. And crack down really hard on the illegal fags. In all honesty, all the teenagers I know who smoke do not in any case buy the illegal fags – they get people to buy fags for them in the local newsagent, and of course there are also many newsagents who sell to young people who are plainly much younger than 18. Shocking to see the next generation getting this awful habit that will likely plague them for decades, destroy their health and take so much money out of their pockets.

Michelle…as stated in earlier responses, be careful what you wish for! If the smokers and drinkers in this country stopped cold turkey the economy would collapse. What might happen then?…think Cyprus…they come after you and your bank accounts…

This ongoing austerity will have the same affect on the Irish nation as a tourniquet can have on an injured leg.

The more you tighten it the more the blood flow is decreased to it, but if you don’t remove the tourniquet, the extremity may die from lack of blood flow and require an amputation.
