Boston, Philly and onto New York: How Penneys is plotting its US takeover

More details of Primark’s US expansion have been revealed.

PRIMARK’S FANCY NEW stateside store will open in a month’s time, 46 years after the first Penneys store opened in Dublin.

It was announced last year that the historic Burnham Building in Downtown Crossing, Boston will be the location for Primark’s first US store and the company have now revealed that their second location will be in Philadelphia.

The Boston store is set to open its doors on 10 September with the company in the middle of an advertising push to hire prospective sales assistants and supervisors.

Primark say that the new Boston store will have 77,000 square-feet of floor space and will stock some clothing that’s exclusive to US costumers.

The group have also partnered up with US-based style media company Refinery29 who will feature Primark clothing through an ‘Editor’s Picks’ feature.

Primark, which is owned by Associated British Foods, explains that their US expansion plans will see them have a total of nine stores by the end of 2016.

The second of which will see them opening up in the King of Prussia Shopping mall in Philadelphia, one of the biggest malls in the US.

Their focus is the east coast with stores also planned for New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Much of this expansion is likely to come by way of a deal Primark signed last year with US retail chain Sears.

Sears is looking to raise cash and agreed lease agreements that will see Primark open seven stand-alone stores in shopping centres across the northeastern US.

The conglomerate started on Mary Street in Dublin city centre in 1969 and now over 57,000 people and operates over 287 stores around the world.

Its headquarters are in Ireland too, it’s only the headquarters of the parent company (Associates British Foods) that is in London (and that company was founded by a Canadian).

They are officially an Irish company.

The same way Guinness is an Irish company owned by a British Parent.

Or Fosters being Australian even though it’s not…

Wait… is Fosters even made in Australia?

Andrew is also right, ABF was founded by a Canadian whose family still own the company. Galen Weston heads the family now – fun fact; Galen Weston originally opened A-Wear, which he wanted to call Gay-Wear until it was pointed out to him that the name wouldn’t fly over here. He also bought Brown Thomas for his Irish wife as a birthday present.

Not true. Some items are the same, but the stores in every country have different buyers resulting in each country running different lines.

Penneys faced legal action from JC Penney when it moved into the UK. Supposedly the company had to rip down the “Penneys” name from a shopfront in the UK and the store remained nameless while they tried to come up with an alternative name. They ran a competition to see if the public could come up with a suitable alternative, and in the end someone on the board suggested Primark.
