What's happening at this year's Culture Night?

Culture Night is here again… It’s the project’s tenth birthday, and a raft of intriguing events have been announced.

CULTURE NIGHT HAS been a huge success in the last decade.

And once again this September, venues, museums and art studios will be throwing open their doors for hundreds of free events, tours, talks and performances.

The project is ten years old this year – and a bumper programme to mark the milestone was launched earlier today.

As usual, there’s so much happening your best option is to have a quick trawl of their website for events in your area.

In fact, the full programme won’t be confirmed for a few weeks yet – but we’ve been sifting through this morning’s announcements for some highlights…

Dublin

  • The RTÉ Philharmonic Choir will perform a massive concert at Trinity, alongside the Army Number 1 Band.
  • And of course you’ll be able to pay after-hours visits to a host of attractions – including, for the first time this year, the new Teeling Whiskey Distillery in the Liberties.

Cork

  • Cork IGNITE will see the front of the city’s College of Commerce brought to life with 3D projections and music.
  • ‘Secrets of a Safe Harbour’ will present a secret gig. By whom? Well, all we’re told is that it’s “a Dublin born Irish singer-songwriter, specialising in atmospheric, indie folk/chamber pop”.

Galway

Belfast

  • Amnesty International and the Rainbow Project host a ’Big Fat Gay Wedding‘ with the Feile Woman’s Choir providing the music.

Around the country

  • Luka Bloom performs at Kilkishen Cultural Centre in Clare.
  • ‘Codladh Sámh’- what’s being described as a “truly unforgettable traditional music experience for babies”- takes place in Sligo.
  • Culture Night comes to Achill Island, where there’ll be specially organised ‘Culture Crawl’ on September 18th.

What’s with the ridiculous Big Fat Gay Wedding? That’s not at all in any way related to culture night. Bullshit.

Culture Night is huge in Limerick City, last year had over 80 separate events one of the best nights of the year attracts massive crowds.

There doesn’t seem to be anything officially organised yet. Check out the culture night website, and there’s no events listed for Limerick.

Gay marriage is still illegal in Belfast so “good luck” to amnesty with their propaganda stunt.

That’s the point… It’s to show support for getting same-sex marriage legalised up there.

I’ll be giving “Culture Night” a miss if the line up in the article is anything to go by. Luka Bloom my hole.

Why can;t someone who is not up their own hole organise a festival these days in this country?

I never met a “cultured” person who could understand the Second Law of Thermodynamics.
“Arts and Culture” is a cult for people who are a bit dense.
No good at Mathematics…any of them.
(Cult and Cult-ure have the same root in language).
