"A dreadful, dreadful thing to happen" - school mourns death of Leaving Cert student in crash

18-year-old Michael Warren had been due to collect his exam results this morning.

A COUNTY LONGFORD school is in mourning following the death of one of their Leaving Cert students in a car accident.

18-year-old Templemichael College student Michael Warren was involved in the single-vehicle accident which happened on the Ferefad to Ballymacormack Road in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Five people were in the car when it collided with a ditch. Michael was the only one injured.

He was removed to hospital from the scene but died from his injuries on Monday in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin.

A native of nearby Newtownforbes, Michael, who played hurling for the local Clonguish GAA club, would have been due to collect his Leaving Cert results this morning.

Local Fine Gael councillor Peggy Nolan said the accident was “just a dreadful, dreadful thing to happen”.

“It’s such an awful thing to land on any parent’s door,” she told TheJournal.ie.

Nolan, who sits on the Board of Directors at Templemichael, said that Michael was “an exemplary student, and just a wonderful young man”.

“All of these accidents are just horrific,” fellow Fine Gael councillor John Browne told TheJournal.ie.

You’ve five people in a car and they’re just too inexperienced.
Your heart has to go out to these people. All you can hope is that people can learn from a tragedy like this.

A statement from Templemichael College said that staff and students are “shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the death of one of our Leaving Certificate students Michael Warren”.

Our sympathy and thoughts are with Michael’s family and friends at this tragic time.
We need to support the members of our school community who have been affected by this tragic event.
Counsellors and Psychologists from the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) will be in attendance at the school on Wednesday to offer care and support to those affected at this difficult time.

Michael’s funeral will take place on Thursday at 3pm in St Mary’s Church, Newtownforbes.

He is survived by his parents Michael and Elaine, sisters Katrina, Ciara and Megan, brother Cormac, girlfriend Aidene and many other family and friends.

Don’t think these red thumbs are intentional, people accidentally and unknowingly hit the red thumb as they are scrolling down the page, it’s a fault with the app
