THE SEARCH FOR a missing fisherman will resume today off the coast of County Kerry.

The Chinese man was fishing on Friday afternoon when he was swept out to sea by a rogue wave.

The Irish Coastguard footage shown on RTÉ shows the area where the man was last seen.

Over the weekend searches for the man were co-ordinated by Valentia Coastguard, Shannon Rescue 115 and the naval vessel the LÉ Orla.

LÉ Orla was appointed as the On-Scene Coordinator, with Fenit lifeboat and Glenderry Coastguard unit assisting in scouring the area in rough sea conditions.

Speaking on Newstalk this morning, Fergus Cooney from the Irish Coastguard appealed to all shore anglers to wear a life-jacket when fishing.

I have done a lot of fishing in Kerry- the most dangerous spots can also be the best for fish, however I never Fish in these places- they are just too dangerous! I always wear a life jacket and would implore anyone to do the same! The sea and Lakes can go from tranquil to highly dangerous in a matter of minutes – not worth risking life and limb for a basket of fish!

Awful to see something like this happen again this summer. Also sorry but I don’t think that’s the LE Orla, wrong colour for a start.

That’s probably Fenit lifeboat, picture taken by crew on L.E Orla, unfortunately not the first person to be lost from this fishing spot :-(

It says the source of the picture is lieutenant Donaldson from the LE Orla.

Unfortunately this was unlikely to have been a ‘rogue wave’, just a large regular wave. People underestimate the power of the sea, and just how easy it can be to get swept off if you’re in the wrong place.

The thrill of standing on a dodgy fishing area to catch a poxy little fish. Ain’t no thrill to me. Senseless

Great article, the Kerry coast must be hundreds of miles long. So good of the journal to pinpoint the location so well as the Kerry coast. Keep up the shoddy work journal.ie, why change what you are getting away with.
