Lucky escape: A cyclist fell into a Wicklow river and got trapped in thick brambles

Two lifeboat crew members managed to swim to the man. He was later taken to hospital.

A CYCLIST HAS been rescued from the Avoca River in Co Wicklow after a multi-agency rescue operation last night.

The Wicklow Fire Service, gardaí, ambulance and Coast Guard volunteers all responded – as did the Arklow RNLI crew.

The alarm was raised at around 9.25pm, following reports a cyclist had fallen into the Avoca River, near Arklow.

The man was eventually located, tangled up thick brambles, upriver from the town’s landmark ’19 Arches’ Bridge.

Two RNLI crew members swam to the man, reassured him that he would be okay and began removing him from the brambles.

A small rescue boat was then launched, and the crew-members – along with the rescued cyclist – clambered on board.

A waiting ambulance transported him to hospital.

John Tyrrell, the Arklow Lifeboat Operations manager, said it was a successful multi-agency response:

“I’d like to say well done to all involved, this incident involved almost all of our local emergency services, through the inter agency co-operation we all managed to save a life, again this shows the importance of our emergency services training together to work together.”

@ChronicAnxiety: Its a popular political tactic to dig up past comments and quote them so Edwin would be the preferred winner among opponents I’d say, they’d never be short of a quote and they’d find international fame, so they would.

I do love that Edwin Poots cited London as part of his “international outreach” plan. It must be awful confusing being a hard line unionist at times

@Gary Garden: The natives of our Island? Their ancestors have been on the island for hundreds of years, at what point are they natives themselves? You don’t sound like the most inclusive person yourself.

@Gary Garden: so how many hundreds of years does a family need to live on this island? What must our recent immigrants to these shores think of the possibility of integrating their families into Irish life. Grow up & be part of the solution not the problem.

    @Gary Garden:

“Moved back”. There’s a better chance of all WASPS in America moving back to Blighty!

You do realise, The Plantation of Ulster by folks from S. of Scot and N. of Eng first started almost 20 yrs before The Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America on ‘The Mayflower’ to escape religious persecution back home in England.

So it’s unlikely that folks with that heritage will ever be “moving back”, similar to folks in USA with 26 county heritage going back over two hundred years.

Our fellow countrymen and women of Unionist persuasion are well settled on the Island and shouldn’t have to move anywhere!

We all just need to figure out how to orchestrate a good old ‘Boston Tea Party’ style event to help finally break the link with our colonisers.

Brexit just might be a hors d’oeuvre!
