Overnight mission: Three rescued in late night call-out for Coast Guard chopper

A ‘May Day’ call was received after reports of a possible engine fire on board the fishing vessel.

THREE CREW MEMBERS of a fishing vessel were taken safely to shore in the early hours of yesterday morning after the Kilmore Quay Lifeboat and the Coast Guard Rescue 117 helicopter were dispatched to a late night call-out off the south east coast.

It followed reports of a possible engine fire on board the craft, just south of the Saltee Islands – off Kilmore Quay.

A ‘May Day’ call was received – and the two rescue crews responded at around 10pm.

The crew of the lifeboat helped the fishing crew bring the situation under control, as the Rescue 117 chopper illuminated the scene from above with its searchlight.

“Rescue 117 stood by overhead in case any crew were injured or needed to be winched to safety, while illuminating the scene with its ‘Nightsun’ for the Lifeboat,” a message on its Facebook page said.

“Thankfully there were no casualties to report and the Kilmore Lifeboat towed the vessel safely back to the quay, arriving at approx 00.15hrs.”

I have to say I’m impressed with the quality of our lifeboats and rescue helicopters. FairPlay to all involved! Makes me proud to be Irish! They do an amazing job!

These guys are amazing, both the voluntary and the permanent boasts and heli crews but one thing always irks me… we don’t own the helis. they are provided to the state, a maritime state, for half a billion euro over ten years, and flown by a private company.
