THE CHILEAN GOVERNMENT has decided to deport an Irish priest who was convicted last year of sexually abusing a young girl, the interior ministry said.
The Irish-born priest, John O’Reilly, was sentenced to four years’ probation in November for repeatedly molesting the girl from the time she was five.
The abuse took place from 2010 to 2012 at an exclusive school where O’Reilly was the spiritual advisor at the time.
The interior ministry said it was revoking O’Reilly’s permanent residency and that he would have to leave the country after completing his sentence in 2018.
The decision can be appealed to the Supreme Court.
O’Reilly, 69, was once an influential figure in Chile as the local head of the Catholic Church’s ultra-conservative Legion of Christ order.
He arrived in Chile in 1984 and was granted citizenship in 2008 — but had it revoked in March by Congress.
The Legion of Christ has been beset by accusations of sexual abuse.
The order’s founder, Mexican-born Marcial Maciel, stepped down in 2005 amid allegations of pedophilia and fathering several children. He died in 2008.

He was possibly sent abroad originally when allegations were made against him here, wouldn’t be the first time.

Over one dozen reports in Ireland outlining the abuse of children in Ireland (Ferns, Ryan, Murphy, Cloyne et al) have been published in Ireland – and no prosecutions of cardinals, archbishops, bishops or Religious Superiors who condoned, facilitated and covered up the abuses. Indeed it is more likely for a bishop to be arrested for no TV licence that for the facilitation of child abuse by a clergy colleague.

Well, if he’s gone to confession and said he’s “weally weally sowwy”, God has forgiven him, his slate is wiped clean and he’s free to abuse… I mean be a priest again. He’ll probably be given a primary school to minister over. It’s what the catholic hierarchy does here – move abusers and present them with ample fresh meat.
Here? He’ll be welcomed back by the Legion and rewarded with plum job in one of their primary schools or retreats, no doubt. And the parents who defend so vigorously their right to a religious education for their children would do well to educate themselves on what they are demanding.

Good, he became a naturalised Chilean citizend and had it revoked by congress. If we could just do the same with the Naturalised jihadhist in Ireland, but we don’t have the cojones for that, even if is clearly highlighted in our laws.
