The Daily PollDETAILS EMERGED YESTERDAY that Dunnes Stores worker Anna Perenc was sacked after selling alcohol to an underaged teenager.
She was caught doing this as part of a sting operation and was approached by a member of Gardaí moments after making the sale to the 16-year-old.
After a number of meetings with management the woman was sacked for gross misconduct. She has since been awarded €16,000 by the Employment Appeals Tribunal for unfair dismissal.
Gardaí have previously carried out sting operations to catch car and bike thieves.
Are sting operations reasonable? Or do they go too far? What do you think?

I work in the publiuc service and your absolutely right. The managers are useless in my department. They are supposed to worl 9 -5.45 every day. They dont show up until 10.30 and leave at 3 pm. None ever do a fulll weeks work. Some dont even bother comming to work two or three time a week.
The department is run efficiently by junior staff who have a work ethic.
Time for a root and branch clearout of managers in the public service starting with the HSE. They shouldn’t be paid a penny severence pay either. Let the courts decide if they did their jobs efficently.

The frightening thing is that as I looked at his brush off demeanour before the Joint Oireachtas Committe, he genuinely believes that he has done a magnificent job and that this has nothing at all to do with him as CEO of the HSE.

With the weather heating up plus great stretch in the evenings here in Ireland, this gentleman has now been granted garden leave from his new job, requiring the taking of late evening calls from Western USA…the job he shouldn’t have taken up till his contract at HSE expires in around 12 weeks time.
Ministerial approval has been granted, I understand, to now allow him give full attention to his radishes .

It was not the HSE which exposed this appalling scandal. The HSE did everything possible to cover up and to conceal this helped by the State Claims Agency.
It was not the Department of Health and Children which exposed this.
It was not HIQA or any quango which exposed this.
It was not politicians who exposed this.
It was not the Irish Cancer Society which exposed this.
It was not the medical profession which exposed this.
It was not public governance which exposed this.
It was one brave woman, laboring under a terminal diagnosis, at risk of losing her home, under debilitating chemotherapy and radiotherapy, who exposed all of this.
Public governance in the area of health does not properly function in Ireland.
Saving money costs the lives of real women, often young and middle aged.

At the start of the outsourcing process when people who had expertise in this area shouted out their warnings and said we’d see the awful consequences of outsourcing within ten years. And what did this very man Tony o Brien do….he said that they were ” on the wrong end of the procurement process” thereby trying to discredit them and implying that it was merely sour grapes on their part….now that they are proven correct we are told “well actually this wasn’t the problem that they said we’d have” ….and yet Mr. O Brien is deluded enough to believe that he should remain in his post, that he has delivered what was asked of him…….we’ll try again Tony…you have succeeded only in pushing patients into private healthcare, something no doubt your well heeled peers are thrilled with but you have left the health service in a much worse place with people actually dying from negligence…..and they thought you were fit to double job…..heads rolling….more like arsed in jail cells because this entire debacle is criminal…and Vicky Phelan should be nominated for president because she has done more for the women and patients of this country than the entire political system.

Eh- he’s actually handed in his notice a few months back so he’s due to leave already. So this is a blatant waste of time/showboating.
You don’t sack people in order to establish the truth, you sack them because they have screwed up so badly that they have cost 17 people their lives and they are obviously not fit for the positions they hold. Establishing the truth is an entirely unrelated matter.
It’s not a question of sacking O’Brien. The most despicable thing is that the man himself hasn’t the decency to admit that the buck stops with him and to resign voluntarily. Imagine working for somebody who disowns you in front of a Dáil committee. He has no ethics & no standards. Public servants like T.K Whitaker would be disgusted!

I think we can all agree that the HSE is a failing mess. And this animal has been running, and ruining it, for years. He should have been sacked years ago. Days of jobs for the boys and all these tw@ts looking after each other needs to end right now. Now sack him and go in and ask who knew what and when and did what and then sack a few more. Any contractors or businesses involved- sue them. Bring in the cops and jail some people. Get tough fast on this ffs.

There are more fall guys involved here that this guy,yes he should go but at the end of the line is a political system whose willingness to govern fairly is the real problem.
Politicians of all hue blame everyone when problems arise but they perpetuate this system.
Vicky luckily was an well educated articulate woman prepared to risk everything to get justice.
Those of us who have been beaten down by our health sustem quietly accept out faith as we do with a severely autistic son going ballistic in the House at this moment the ears of politicians and HSE are firmly focused on the hotspots they will live life to the full at this weekend.

I hope you can find some support for your boy and also some support for yourselves as a family…it’s a terrible thing to have to say but Ur better looking for this support from voluntary bodies as opposed to those who should be providing it to their citizens. Tanaiste is basically telling us there is gonna be no political or civil service accountability for this monumental mistake. No accountability means no meaningful loss or penalty for these incompetent idiots, therefore it’s telling them they can just carry on as before.

Getting rid of O’Brien and he going anyway does nothing other than to provide a scapegoat for the politicians and other senior civil servants who pull the strings. It should be all hands to the pumps now to get retests done, processed ASAP and put women out of their misery with accurate results and a fast action plan where required. The real problem is the vast cultural change that is required in our union suppressed public sector. The INMO and Liam Doran, amongst others, hailed the appointment of O’Brien. These are the parasites who reject innovation, work practice changes and any initiative that may introduce efficiency. Cross party consensus is needed, disarm the unions and tackle the problems head-on with cross party agreement on approach to what is a national scandal, our health sys

The problem for FG/HSE that happened last week was we were never meant to know this story. As with all previous enquires in this state nothing will happen the Garda should be investigating this and criminal charges should be issued.
The priority is a new system of HPV testing, more frequent testing, at least annually, more expertise and more resources to ensure that the job is done right.
