Two accidents (one involving seven vehicles) on the M50

All lanes have since re-opened.

DUBLIN FIRE BRIGADE attended the scene of a seven-vehicle incident on the M50 southbound this evening.

Five cars and two trucks were involved in the incident, which took place at junction four (the Ballymun exit) at about 7pm.

While en route, DFB was informed of a second accident that occurred on the other side of the road (northbound).

DFB told TheJournal.ie this was likely due to the fact someone took their eyes off the road to look over at the first accident.

Five people, including two children, have been taken to hospital in relation to the first accident.

Both roads had to be temporarily closed, but the lanes have since re-opened.

The children have been taken to Crumlin Hospital, while the adults have been taken to various other hospitals.

None of their injuries are thought to be serious.

In the northbound incident, which was described as minor, a number of people were treated by DFB paramedics on the scene. No one from this accident had to be taken to hospital.

Three fire brigades and three ambulances were on the scene. DFB confirmed that a third accident, also minor, took place nearby but they weren’t in attendance.

Grafton Street fire

In a separate incident, DFB attended the scene of a small residential fire in an apartment above Lifestyle Sports on Grafton Street in Dublin at around 8pm.

Slack for iOS Upload Hugh O'Connell / TheJournal.ie Hugh O'Connell / TheJournal.ie / TheJournal.ie

The fire was quickly brought under control and no one was injured.

A crash caused by gauking is not an accident. You don’t accidently gawk. It’s simply careless driving And journal, you should know better

Just do as I always do and pass that idiot on inside. Irrelevant of speed it is not illegal as I challenged the RSA on this and they couldn’t show me anywhere in the ROTR or the Road Traffic Act where it says otherwise on motorways. You queue behind a hogger and you are also lane hogging. No wonder the driving lane is always empty. Use the driving lane, That’s what it’s there for.

Legal or not, it’s not very safe though?

If there are idiot middle lane hoggers, I either wait patiently in the left lane, or if I can be bothered I go around.

Big breath, patient drive, low blood pressure > drivers who get all worked up and must always be overtaking (to be clear, I’m not implying you drive like that, Shawn!)

Every manouvre on roads have risks. Passing on left has the same risk as overtaking a left hand drive vehicle. If you ask any driver do they check their left mirror when changing back to driving lane, everyone of them would say yes. When undertaking you have to be aware of traffic to your right merging. The fear people have stems back to when it wasn’t a legal requirement to have a left side view mirror. It is safer to pass on inside than to make as much a 6 lane changes to get ahead of hogger who is in lane 3, wouldn’t you say.

Same myself. An empty driving lane makes everyone else hoggers. Just curious but how many lanes to your right would the hogger have to be be before you would pass on inside?

Using the m50 you see people drifting lanes on phones, crossing 3 lanes to exit, tailgating and speeding from entry to the next exit in the slow lane. Garda don’t seem to have a preventative role. Aggressive driving and skipping queues using peoples good nature should be punished also. Shocking overall standard of driving.

On motorways the only time you could be charged for undertaking is if you are constantly weaving in and out of traffic to pass. If you are simply passing on left within the limit then those to your right are committing the offence of lane hogging, and if a Garda pulled you in rather than the one who is committing an offence then he would not be carrying out his duty. Anybody who says it’s illegal is talking nonsence.
