A GOVERNMENT TASKFORCE in New South Wales, Austrailia, is considering making it compulsory for child sex abusers to be chemically castrated.
In some parts of the country courts can already order dangerous sex offenders to have the treatment as part of their release conditions and offenders in New South Wales can undergo the treatment voluntarily while in prison.
However news.com.au reports the state’s justice minister wants to go one step further by making castration a judicial sentencing option.
One of the worrying statistics that came out of our investigation is that up to 17 per cent of child sex offenders are likely to re-offend in two years,” Mr Grant told the ABC.
“We must do everything possible to reduce that figure.”
However 9news reports psychiatrists in the country say mandatory castration of paedophiles would be unethical. Dr John Kasinathan said the code of ethics for psychiatrist require that there be valid consent from patients before undertaking any treatment like this.

Perfect solution. I would say after any serious sexual incident with a minor. It’s not something people experiment with. If you do it your a paedophile and that’s that. Cut to the chase and castrate them save time money and potential suffering for another child.
But what if it turns out he didn’t do it. Back to this old chestnut. Trust me I have a daughter and would kill anyone who touched her but this needs an awful lot of thought. I just don’t know.

Would prefer execution but you take what you can get. Its certainly miles better than anything considered in Ireland.

Sadly, castration is ineffective and even turns some offenders more homicidal and dangerous.
Permanent incarceration in conditions of high security is the only effective preventative method.

Execution is the best solution from both an effectiveness and financial point of view.
There is a danger of wrongful conviction.
The major problem, as identified by criminologists, is that child molesters facing execution as a result of conviction will more likely kill the child victim so as to reduce the risk of discovery and conviction.
However emotionally attractive execution is, it will not address the problem. Life long imprisonment is more effective although expensive.
The danger of wrongful conviction is massively overstated by anti-death penalty campaigners.
Most people at risk of execution in the US currently committed their crimes in the 80s and 90s. These days our forensic methods have improved to such a degree that guilt can be proven in the vast majority of cases.
I think you will find that life long incarceration is about as attractive as the death penalty for people who have their freedom. So while I won’t contest that a criminologist said what you claim but I highly doubt that is the general consensus.
I was under the same impression that castration makes the offenders worse in that they use foreign objects to gain pleasure etc etc

Actually Anthony, chemical castration is working in the US. Early days mind you. Offenders, are living somewhat normal lives with no thoughts of re offending.
Castration followed by execution would be more appropriate

I saw a film documentary about a paedophile priest who molested hundreds of children in the States before he was deported back to Ireland. They found him in a playground (in Dublin) looking at children. The biggest grin in his face. When he was talking about molesting children including infants, he was laughing. This creature has no business left here on earth as hell is awaiting him. Execution is a tough row to hoe no doubt many legal complexities but in these cases, it does prevent more victimization.

I get that BUT it’s hard to reverse that decision if there is a miscarriage of justice.
Depends what you want doesn’t it? If you want to be 100% sure they won’t re-offend then execution or life meaning life with no option for parole. The latter allows for rectification of wrongful convictions. Chemical castration is not effective enough as it still leaves the possibility, no matter how remote, of re-offending. If you give them life imprisonment then you should also ensure that mechanisms are in place to force them to earn their keep. Alternatively you could apply the McGahan principle and tie their testicles to the nearest train.
Another option is to allow for retaliation by family members and not prosecute or allow for a defence of minors clause.
How about actual castration?

in cases like these the death penalty would be more appropriate…………………..and would serve as a massive deterrent. many will consider in humane and suggest lifelong incarceration for the offender, how much will that cost the state? how many new wards in children’s hospitals or homeless accommodation units that are badly needed could be funded with that money.

Well I don’t agree with it. I would agree with life in prison with no chance of parol and reduced rights to quality of life.

The proposed solution would still have very disturbed individuals living within normal society with a high risk of causing harm.
