1. #SHOOTING: A sheriff’s deputy has been shot dead while filling up his patrol car at a suburban Houston petrol station. He was pumping petrol into his vehicle when a man approached him from behind and fired multiple shots.

2. #ANGLO: The High Court will rule this afternoon on a bid by former Anglo chairman Sean FitzPatrick to stop his criminal trial from going ahead in October, RTÉ reports. Mr Justice Moriarty is due to give his judgment at midday.

3. #WE WON’T PAY: Motorists in Dublin city centre are being advised to expect traffic restrictions this afternoon, ahead of a major demonstration against water charges.

4. #COASTLINE SEARCHES: The Irish Coast Guard has issued a warning to the public to avoid an area of coastline near Kilkee in Clare, where searches for a Japanese couple have been taking place.

5. #MISSING GIRL: Gardaí have issued a renewed appeal for help tracing a 17-year-old girl missing since last week.

6. #POGUES: Shane MacGowan, the 57-year-old lead-singer of The Pogues, has broken his pelvis, the Irish Daily Mirror reports. It happened while he was attempting a “complicated dance move” according to the paper. He’s said to be recovering well.

7. #RED PLANNING: Six people have shut themselves inside a dome for a year in Hawaii, in the longest US isolation experiment aimed at helping NASA prepare for a pioneering journey to Mars.

8. #VAN THE MAN: Van Morrison is about to turn 70. The famously truculent singer has given an interview to Fintan O’Toole of the Irish Times to mark the occasion (in the paper’s Weekend section this morning).

9. #AS YOU WERE: And, so much for the optimistic predictions… That Indian summer isn’t happening.
