7 unusual ways to get some culture this weekend

And they’re all at the Tiger Dublin Fringe opening this week.

TIGER DUBLIN FRINGE opened this week and the line-up is pretty sweet indeed.

From acrobatic installations to one-woman plays and a hootenanny* (whatever that is), there’s definitely something for everyone in this celebration of theatre, art and performance.

We’ve rounded up a few of the best acts that caught our eye – so now you’ve no excuse not to have a full-on, jam-packed week ahead.

*It’s an informal gathering with folk music.

Scotch and Soda – Company 2

Fringefest Fringefest

Scotch & Soda is a classic drink but in this instance it’s a mixed-up combination of physical feats and jazz accompanied by acrobatics and musicians. We’re not totally sure what to expect, but combining circus performers and music makers called The Crusty Suitcase band (so you’ve some idea what to expect) – and throwing a little humour in there (of course) makes for a heady evening altogether.

GROUNDED by George Brant

Fringefest Fringefest

She’s a hot-rod F16 fighter pilot. She’s pregnant. She’s grounded. Her career in the sky is over.

GROUNDED tells the story of a fighter pilot grounded by her pregnancy, now relegated to flying drones over the Middle East. As she progresses with 12-hour shifts, exhaustion and dealing with her family, pressures mount and lines are blurred.

With a timely take on many issues facing the world today, from the crisis in the Middle East, to the usage of drones, as well as women in the military and how they are differentiated from their colleagues, there’s enough meat in this play to keep your mind chewing over for the rest of the week.

After each story, judges give a score and the winner moves on to the Dublin GrandSLAM championship.

Want to get onstage at the Spiegeltent? Prepare a five minute story on that theme and simply drop your name in the hat on the night.

HARDER FASTER MORE – Red Bear Productions

Fringefest Fringefest

What do all these people have in common - a confused sex chat line worker, the sister of a porn actor struggling to cope, battling movie producers who are under instruction to ‘sex it up’, a daytime TV talk show host who’s too old for the job and a lonely pole dancer missing home? They’re all characters in a new piece from the award-winning company Red Bear Productions.

To tell you any more would be to give it all away, and if that doesn’t pique your interest, nothing will. (It’s not suitable for under 18s)
