Two gardaí assaulted after stopping motorcycle in Ballyfermot

Both men sustained serious facial injuries and one remains in hospital.

TWO GARDAÍ ARE recovering from injuries they sustained in an assault yesterday evening in Dublin.

The two gardaí in their 30s are understood to have stopped a motorcycle in the Landen Road area of Ballyfermot, near Markievicz Park at 5pm. It is believed they were attempting to seize the bike from a youth when they were attacked.

A garda spokesperson said the men were “badly assaulted” and both needed hospital treatment. Both are understood to have sustained facial injuries and one remains in hospital this evening.

No arrests have been made but inquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Ballyfermot Garda Station.

The Garda Representative Association (GRA) has estimated as many as 1,000 gardaí a year are assaulted, in a force of less than 11,000 men and women. The organisation has been calling for specific legislation to define strict sentencing terms for anyone who assaults a member of An Garda Síochána in the course of their duty.

100% there needs to be heavy punishment for anyone who assaults a member of the Garda. The majority of them are doing there best to keep us safe in our homes and communities. These individuals need to treated severely. Anyone with convictions on a regular basis should receive no state entitlement as there are contributing nothing to the state. Invest the savings into Garda resources and recruitment.

Is it time that we started to arm our Garda with Taser guns at least?? No one needs to go to work expecting some potential of violence without having an adequate form of defense.

It’s past time for Minimum Mandatory sentences of 5 Years rising exponentially for each charge of assault on any Gardai, Prison Staff, Fire Fighters and Medical Staff.
In this case 2 Gardai assaulted = Minimum 10 year sentence with no remission, if only the minimum sentence is applied.
It’s also time to bring back the “Hard Labour” concept and introduce Chain Gangs into our Prisons.
Prime example of where it works like a dream is Maricopa County in Arizona run by Sheriff Joe Arpaio. His chain gangs carry out menial labour tasks around the county saving the local taxpayers millions of dollars each year. He also uses convict labour running the county animal pound.
So instead of having convicts that are not willing to either educate themselves or learn industrial skills while in prison and just walk around the yard or play snooker in recreation halls they can be made to be useful to society by simple physical labour.
And if you dont want to comply with the work regime. Then you stay locked up 23 hours per day with your TV stations limited to CBBC, The God Channel or Peace TV, your food to be the same meals every single day, your visits to be limited to 1x 30 min per month same with phone calls and letters.

Arm the Garda, give them the tools to subdue the parasites of our communities. Taser guns and other non lethal weapons should be the minimum tools of the job Stop pussy footing around and give the Garda the tools that they need to effectively protect the rest of us law abiding citizens.

As a person with a few gardai in my family I certainly hope they do not get armed… Well with guns anyway.. Tasers yes without a doubt. Introducing guns opens up the possibility of criminals using guns against the gardai which thankfully isn’t a common occurrence against the force.. I reckon it would be very hard to live in the US if you have a Cop in the family. The poor families must be in constant fear!

I’m regularly in Ballyfermot, have never once needed a bleeding protective mask. I’m also already living around Tallaght, and it’s not like that. There’s some dckheads everywhere, and lots of good people. If you genuinely believe you can tell whether or not a person is good based on their address then you’re very naive, and you should be more careful. Bad people live everywhere. Stay safe.

Certainly, some Gardai need some kind of defensive weapon, as more a deterrent than to be used, but they should be able to carry something, like pepper spray. And only allowed in the most vulnerable areas. But for the most part, the regular Gardai should not need or have it, they are the communication in troubled communities, they are the guys and gals dealing with situations, and they are trained to deal with it.

A man with a certain set of skills!! It seems very extreme for a guy on his own to assault two experienced members of the force in broad daylight over a motorbike. I wonder if they got abusive or extra smart and overstepped the mark with the guy, who then overreacted himself? Of course he could have been intoxicated or on drugs making it an even more dangerous situation.
In a time in this country where the State and its minions treat people with a lack of respect there will always be ‘ the straw the broke the camels back’, it’s unfortunate for the boys in blue but they’ll get well compensated for it when they take a court case next year. They’re lucky they didn’t carry weapons or by the look of this situation we would be talking about two dead Garda. Very fortunate
