MET WITH GERMAN faces so friendly that it brought some to tears, over 6,000 migrants and refugees have reached Munich
Travellers predominantly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan who had been told for days they could not leave Hungary were scooped from roadsides and Budapest’s central train station and placed on overnight buses, driven to the frontier with Austria and allowed to walk across as a new day dawned.
They were met with unexpected hospitality featuring free high-speed trains, seemingly bottomless boxes of supplies, and well-wishers offering candy for everyone and cuddly toys for the children in mothers’ arms. Even adults absorbed the sudden welcome with a look of wonderment as Germans and Austrians made clear that they had reached a land that just might become a home.
“I’m very glad to be in Germany I hope that I find here a much better life. I want to work,” said Homam Shehade, a 37-year-old Syrian shopkeeper who spent 25 days on the road. He left behind his parents, a brother, wife, a 7-year-old boy and a 2 ½-year-old girl.
He hopes to bring them all to Germany Until then, he said:
“I hope that God protects them from the planes and bombs. My shop was bombed and my house was bombed.”
As the migrants departed Hungary, leaders took a few final swipes at their departing guests.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban told reporters that Hungary drove the migrants to the border only because they were posing a public menace, particularly by snarling traffic and rail lines west of Budapest.
Orban said the people being taken by Germany mostly come “from regions that are not ravaged by war. They just want to live the kind of life that we have. And I understand that, but this is impossible. If we let everybody in, it’s going to destroy Europe.”
The contrast could not have been greater in Vienna’s central train station. When around 400 asylum seekers arrived on the morning’s first border train, charity workers offered food, water and packages of hygiene products for men and women.
Austrian onlookers cheered the migrants’ arrival, with many shouting “Welcome!” in both German and Arabic. One Austrian woman pulled from her handbag a pair of children’s rubber rain boots and handed them to a Middle Eastern woman carrying a small boy.
Sami Al Halbi, a 28-year-old veterinarian from Hama in Syria, said he fled to avoid mandatory military service. “They asked me to join the army. I am educated. For years I’ve been holding a pen. I do not want to hold a weapon,” he said. “We all want to have a better future.”
It got better as travellers continued west on more trains, some of them specially provided for the migrants.As Austria’s government noted, virtually none of those coming intended to seek asylum before reaching Germany the eurozone powerhouse that has pledged to aid Syrians fleeing from their 4-year-old civil war. Germany expects to receive a staggering 800,000 asylum seekers this year.
In Munich’s central station, the first arrivals from Hungary received cheering and applause. Many who had endured nights sleeping on crowded concrete floors at Budapest’s Keleti station appeared disoriented as Germans approached them holding trays of food. The youngest brightened up as teddy bears were offered as gifts.
“We are giving a warm welcome to these people today,” said Simone Hilgers, spokeswoman for Upper Bavaria government agencies tasked with providing the migrants immediate support.
“We realize it’s going to be a big challenge but everybody, the authorities and ordinary citizens, are pulling together.”
A total of about 6,000 people had come through Munich by Saturday evening, Hilgers said. All were given food and drink, and most were housed in temporary accommodation.

using statistics from the UK, 75% of Muslim women and 50% of Muslim men there are unemployed. That is a significant amount of one social group. I don’t think anyone can call statistics like these racsist or intolerant as they prove clearly there is an issue with the Muslim population in the UK not working and living off benefits. Another study showed that 40% of Muslim men want Sharia law imposed in the UK. I don’t want to tar all followers of Islam with the same brush but those figures are shocking and there is clearly an issue with the Muslim community living in western society simply not contributing or integrating.
Did you ever asked yourself why so many muslim people are unemployed? Is it only because they don’t want to work or might another reason be that employers prefer not to employ them?

Patlyndo please explain how I am being racist to use statistics to make a point? Is it because the statistics paint a minority in a bad light… therefore I am racist because it cannot be that there might be a problem with the minority? On why there are so many unemployed I would guess that one reason could be that many employers on health and safety grounds will not employ Muslims as many have long beards (men) and wear niquabs (women) for religious reasons. Also many observe the call to prayer which is something that might be unsustainable in certain types of jobs. Obviously an employer cannot discriminate on religious grounds but it would be sued or forced to employ someone who contravenes the health and safety policies other employees have to follow in certain jobs.

How are we supposed to have meaningful dialogue about this issue if the word “Racist” is bandied about so much, especially when what the woman said isn’t racist?

The statistics that you are using come from a report, first published in the Daily Mail in 2010, to highlight the significant racism and anti-religious sentiment that Muslims in Britain face on a daily basis. They have since been lifted by countless far right websites and manipulated in the way you have done here to ‘prove’ there is an issue with Muslims when in fact the problem is with the wider British public. If you quote statistics, may I suggest you don’t just lift them from far right, anti-Muslim websites and present them as fact without fully explaining them.

The vast majority of Muslims in Britain are British. Are they supposed to leave their own country? I only highlight racism when it is so. So, if someone manipulates statistics and produces them as fact about a group of people, then I will call it what it is; racism, xenophobia, anti-Muslim etc etc. We need to care about the Irish people because they fear these more than they do refugees.

@catherine the difference with an Irish economic migrant and a Syrian/middle eastern economic migrant is the attitude, and Irish economic migrant is seen as a victim “the poor guy had to leave his family behind to go to Canada/Australia to provide for his family” whereas a middle eastern economic migrant is seen as “They’re coming for our benefits system and they’re going to implement sharia law and ruin the white gene pool” this is the difference and I hope you can see that, we seem to be very sympathetic to the Irish who had to leave ireland to provide for their families yet we can’t do the same for others of different countries who are trying to the same for either their families or their own safety, that’s totally closed minded.
How will we cope when we can’t buy pork because a shop assistant refuses to handle it ? Or beer ? Or when all our meat is halal without us even being asked? Tesco are selling halal stuff and it’s not labeled as such and Subway are using turkey ‘rashers’ in some of their outlets, this multiculturalism is a one way street.

Five of the wealthiest Muslim countries have taken no Syrian refugees in at all, arguing that doing so would open them up to the risk of terrorism. Although the oil rich countries have handed over aid money, Britain has donated more than Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar combined. At one time one could enjoy a beer in Cairo but that all changed with the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood and other extremists. Mind you, they got rid of the Coptic Christians so I supposed not having a beer is a minor problem.
Most of our educated and skilled workers that were in a position to leave for other countries have gone… due to a lack of jobs in Ireland.
These alleged educated workers coming in of which I am sure there is some, what work are they going to do ? where are these jobs for the educated going to come from ?
If there is jobs here from them how come our Irish family members had to leave for foreign countries to get a job ?

Could someone explain how I am skewing statistics to make them racist or xenophobic? Facts are facts. I personally have an issue with the Muslim religion due to its intolerance towards women and gay people, not to mention the disdain for western culture. I also do understand there are moderate Muslims who embrace both their religion and western culture. I don’t understand how disliking a religion that views me as second class makes me racist? Or for pointing out that in one country the majority of followers of that religion do not work makes me racist? In fact I don’t understand how disliking any religion makes anyone racist? People are quick to critique the Catholic Church and its clergy men in Ireland (and rightly so) but critiquing Islam is racist?

1. Lumping people together on the basis of religion when examining something like job statistics makes little sense unless you are examining discrimination. Do you think there is something inherent in Islam that would make people from various different ethnic backgrounds less likely to be employed? Have these statistics been controlled for race, ethnicity and the socio economic level the person was born in to? If so how do they compare to Christians born into low socio economic levels? How do they compare to other first and second generation immigrants from developing countries who are not Muslim?
2. Thinking this is an appropriate statement on a story about refugees says a lot about how you view people fleeing war. Do you think future employability would have been a suitable criteria for Jews fleeing to Britain and other countries during WW2? There was likely plenty of people who just dislike Judaism and not Jews who could have made similar arguments to the ones you make now. Are only educated people allowed protection? Would you be asking the same questions if these were Christians fleeing violence? Would you pull out statistics for black people in the UK or incarceration rates for African-Americans if refugees were fleeing an African conflict and consider that appropriate?

If you had actually bothered to read the article, you’d understand that the point was that British society was anti-religious and xenophobic. Germany with it’s high average age, lack of low skilled workers and strong industrial economy may need economic migrants, we don’t!
360,000++ unemployed many of them young low skilled people, 1200 homeless people in Dublin alone, lack of proper affordable housing, high birth rate and a mainly catholic population…. Ireland is not the place!
There’s a very obvious reason that, as you point out, most of the refugees are men of military-fighting age. It’s because they would be the first to die. They are the most in danger.
As one refugee interview pointed out; he’s 28, trained as a vet, spent his life holding a pen instead of a weapon. Replace the word ‘vet’ with ‘teacher’ and that’s an exact description of me. I completely get him. If I were in his position, I would be terrified. If the tables were turned, would I fight for Ireland? Very likely not. I’d be bullet fodder within a few hours. I’d be useless.
You get one shot at life, and that is it. Why should any of these men lay their lives down for what seems to be a hopeless cause? Without external military help, it sadly seems that Syria is a lost cause.
I’ve spent the last few weeks not knowing what to think about this overall situation. These people need to be saved, but I doubt Europe can handle it all. However one thing is very clear, every single one of them is someone like you and me, and they deserve to live and to be safe. There should be no expectation that they should give their last hours/days/weeks fighting in a terrifying situation that is beyond anything we can imagine. These men are just as terrified as their mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, daughters and nieces. Just because someone is male and between 18-40 does not mean that he is a coward for wanting to live.

We’ll see if they’re still crying ‘tears of joy’ in ten years time after they have failed to integrate and expect special respect be paid to the guy who flew up to heaven on a winged horse. If Germany wishes to sign it’s own cultural death warrant, let them go right ahead.

There guys there from Pakistan, will they be granted asylum. Many currently fleeing to Germany will have a shock when they find their applications for asylum refused. Germany has carte blanche for Syrians but i think they will not be so kind to those obviously economic refugees.

@Kirk – I was watching BBC news last night. I noticed 2 things from the footage. 1. The vast majority were young males 2. They were all well dress with smartphones.
The article above mentions one chap saying that he is educated and should only have to use a pen, not a gun to fight as was requested by him by the army. This really shows how emasculated this generation of young men have become in general.
If this generation of boys (which is what they are – not men) is what we would have had in the 1930s to 1945 – the whole continent would have been overrun by the Nazis in a very short time.

The figures for this year will no be released for another few years and I agree that they are likely to increase, but not by much. You have to remember that even a couple of years ago, there was war and persecution happening throughout the world, which would have caused mass movement of people anyway. It didn’t just start with Syria. Of course, with all of Europe’s media focussing attention on Syria, we believe that it is much larger than this.

Well, the German population is aging, so they could do with an influx of young people to work, pay German pensions with their taxes, and care for the increasing number of elderly people who fill German ranks. We should definitely do our bit and like the UK, we should take whatever number is realistic, directly from the camps. I’m sure there must be a good number of people reaching Germany who are deserving of “refugee” status. However, if there was a real or even perceived danger of death or persecution due to a war in my country, I wouldn’t leave my wife and son behind, and plan to get them later. That is definitely what economic migrants do – I’ve seen countless friends do just that over the past number of years as they left Ireland, but even countries that Irish people have gone to in recent years have immigration controls, visas etc. Different areas of the world have different prospects for prosperity, it’s a reality if the world we live in. Europe must be able to distinguish between migrants and refugees and act accordingly. It should be acknowledged too that Germany has an aging population and within a generation, will have problems associated with that. It seems to me that their silliness of announcing a blanket acceptance of Syrians is causing the rush to the EU and this endangering lives.

Well DIngle when I bring out my autobiography I’ll be sure to send you a copy however I don’t see why I should give my life story to someone hiding behind an anonymous account. Emigration is indeed different from refugees in fact they are the complete opposite, thanks for that as it never dawned on me until you told me. They will however become an issue if people like Jamie get their way and decide to open the floodgates and have an uncontrolled mass influx of people. What will happen when Irish people who went abroad for what they thought was a few years or maybe 2 years of a work visa only to come home and find 30,000 per year added to the work force and no jobs? We have a duty to give refugees asylum and this should be done however only within the capacity that we have.
We have a broken asylum processing system that couldn’t handle 12,000 people at the height of the influx, a broken direct provision system and people in the system for the past 8 years. On top of this lunatics want to bring in even more! I’m sure their humanitarianism sounds great at dinner parties and on their Facebook page but how many will actually come up with a working solution for it or gladly pay extra taxes to fund it?

Jamie, to be fair I understand where you are coming from and if we had the resources and conditions I would gladly accept as many people as possible however we can not save the world. It’s not just the crisis now that we have to think about it is 5, 10, 15 years down the line as well. A lot of Irish people have emigrated over the last few years with the intention of coming home and if they come home to an Ireland that has no jobs because of inward immigration for whatever reason then think of the social consequences. Ireland could well be booming after getting back on track but the jobs are all taken up by foreigners. It would be like a double whammy and I would think cause massive unrest.
Lets take in as many refugees that we have the capacity to handle at the moment, fix the reception and processing systems that we have and then let free market forces dictate the amount of people that enter or leave over the next few years.

I agree with you. We EU should only receive true refugees especially Kurds and Yazidi and in measure which is sustainable economically and culturally. We should ask rich Arabic countries to take their share of their fellows . African subsaharian are economic uneducated migrants which will be only a burden on the States and as such should be diverted back . We need balance compassion with reason and real resources. Yep…If you are fleeing for your life, would you leave you wife and kids behind? I have no problem with this country helping people in need and would have no problem in welcoming anyone who’s life is in danger. when you cherry pick a country you want to claim asylum in….it does look like its economical migration more than genuine asylum. Yes we need to and should do our share to help asylum seekers but many other’s are using this as a one way ticket to a hand picked European country to settle in.
you run, you stop where you feel safe, you realise you can’t stay there long term, you realise you can’t apply for asylum without illegally entering the country first, you realise you can’t bring children and elderly on the journey needed – you leave your family in the safest place you can create and risk your life to go ahead and try and find a safer place.
And people say ‘look at that man, strolling around here on his own claiming our jobs, money, houses and rights. he must not care about anyone but himself to come here alone’. …. and you realise that you will put up with any amount of lonlieness, of danger and of racist abuse if you can just unite your family in one safe place again. you realise that your life now is given for them, even if you can’t be with them.

No one can judge for sure the actual implications of these decisions as it takes time for it to reflect. However, only thing we can do now it to use the talent and skills amongst these people and use it for the betterment of the country so that they are not burden on taxpayers.

The Germans are accepting the refugees folks because they have a demographic crisis. The German birth rate is chronically low and will not sustain the rapidly ageing German population in years to come. There simply won’t be enough workers to pay for the old age pensions, health service etc. That’s why there so keen. You want see France copying them as the French have sustainable birth rate and a huge Muslim population. Exact same for the UK. Which is why they’re not on agreement on any of this with the Germans.
Germany leading the way, with superior services it is inspiring what you can achieve.
Relative to what we can provide I hope we can achieve the same.
Has there been any news about what will happen with the current numbers of asylum seekers already here? I worry that the reality for these people is that there will be a massive back log and people could be trapped for years.
Hotels and holiday parks are not a long term solution. What can we provide in this situation?
How will these people integrate if they are just placed in accommodation far from the local community?
Our Government will not be prepared and will not be able to control the social and economic issues that are going to arise from this.
I am pleased and happy to see the Joy of the Syyrian and other refugees given initial sanctuary and welcome in Germany. Well done to those who made brave political decisions. It is a joyous occasion and it shows human nature at its best, helping our fellow human beings in desperate and urgent need.
In Ireland we suffer from a disabling fear, a fear of difference, a fear of change, a fear of outsiders and a fear of different cultures. Religion is partly the reason. Only Archbishop Martin has belatedly and reluctantly responded to the Christian duty dimension of all of this.
Right now, we are seeing the panic of the fearful, scared, trying to rationalise and to justify that fear, supporting their fear with selective arguments, and scaremongering tactics. An insecure, timid and immature nation wants this problem to be solved by others, while we sit complacently and safe in our island off the coast of mainland Europe.

Have intelligence levels dramatically dropped or am I missing a point. This wave of refugees somehow coincides with the material destruction of these peoples homeland. Death is a high probability, ISIS on one side, Assad on the other. You can really see this tearing the EU apart as there are huge differences between the countries in their attitudes. And this thing is going to get a lot worse. Putin is now going to send heavy weaponry directly to Assad. That’s a nightmare scenario as the region will explode. As said before, the likes of France and the UK have large populations and high birth rates. Each already has a large Muslim population. Germany is taking in refugees for demographic purposes because they are facing a genuine crisis with their very low birth rate. This has been near the top of the agenda for years in Germany, how exactly to fix this. Immigration is the only solution for them. But other countries don’t face the same issues. Ireland is one. We have the highest birth rate in Europe.
