The 23-year-old – who played the Electric Picnic festival in Laois on Saturday – took to Twitter to break the news which he described as “one of the highlights of my career”.

Speaking to Nick Grimshaw on BBC Radio 1, he said: “I’m so relieved to actually talk about this, this has been a top secret mission of my own.

I got called into the office with Barbara Broccoli and Sam Mendes and they gave me the script, I read the script… they said ‘have a go at the song’.

He said it only took himself and Jimmy Napes 20 minutes to write the song ‘Writing’s On The Wall’, which was was recorded back in January.

This is the first James Bond theme song to be recorded by a British male solo artist since 1965.

The film, ‘SPECTRE’, starring Daniel Craig, will be released on 26 October. It will be the 24th movie in the franchise.

Andrew, it’s would have. ‘Would of’ does not form a valid sentence. I think the word you were looking for is would’ve which is a contraction, forming the 2 words would and have.

Safe, boring choice. The male Adele. At least it wasn’t Ellie Goulding. Muse would’ve been a decent choice but Portishead I think would’ve been amazing….

Breakfast conversation between me and my partner:
    - I see Sam Smith will sing the next James Bond theme.
-They must be going for novelty. Why would they ask him?
    - I guess because they like his voice.
Partner looks a bit puzzled and shrugs. -Is he not getting on a bit? I like his articles..
    -What are you talking about?
    - that journalist you were saying is going to sing in the next James Bond film.
    Oh dear God.

Should be Delores because of her aesthetic and her original, alternative voice ,you know the one she mentions when talking about the entrants on the voice ,failing that the current iteration of the Rock steady crew will do .
