The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EACH WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you five things you should know at 5pm.

1. #RACE FOR THE ÁRAS It’s been an eventful day in the race to be the next president of Ireland with Fianna Fáil deciding that the party’s Oireachtas members will not be endorsing any candidate, putting the hopes of David Norris and Dana Rosemary Scallon of being on the ballot paper in some considerable doubt. Earlier, senator Labhrás Ó Murchú withdrew his interest in running for the Áras.

2. #MCGUINNESS Sinn Féin’s candidate for president, Martin McGuinness, has blamed what he calls ‘West Brit’ influences in sections of the media and the political parties for references to his past as a commander in the IRA and insisted his record as a peacemaker is “unequalled”.

3. #SATELLITE A 6.5-ton NASA satellite is falling back to earth this week and scientists have admitted  they do not know where it’s going to land…

4. #SOMALIA The government in Somalia has banned foreigners from delivering aid to some of the areas worst affected by drought and famine leaving potentially millions of people facing certain death, according to GOAL. It’s CEO John O’Shea is calling for a peacekeeping force on the ground in the region.

5. #ON YER BIKE A new survey of 80 cities around the world has found that Dublin is the ninth most bike-friendly. Amsterdam topped the poll but we’ve been asking whether  you think Dublin really is a bike-friendly city.

One could ring the Gardaí in Ardeen but the station would be very difficult to find on a map.
