TWO PEOPLE DIED when a plane carrying crew members from a film starring Tom Cruise crashed in Colombia, aviation authorities and Universal Pictures said.
The crew had just wrapped up production on the upcoming Doug Liman film “Mena,” when it went down while returning to Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport in Medellin.
“On behalf of the production, our hearts and prayers go out to the crew members and their families at this difficult time,” Universal Pictures said in a statement.
On Twitter, Colombia’s civil aviation authority said villagers confirmed two dead and one injured.
The twin-engine plane crashed in a mountainous area in the town of San Pedro de los Milagros around 5:30 pm local town, said Uriel Bedoya of Aerocivil.
Pilot Alan Purwin was among the dead, according to Steve Gatena, chief executive of Helinet Aviation, which owns the plane.
The other two passengers were identified as Jimmy Lee Garland and Carlos Berl.
Cruise, who arrived in Colombia on August 20, recorded scenes there for the film based on the life of American pilot Barry Seal, who worked for drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, who was killed in Medellin in 1993.

Over rated band. Some of their lyrics amount to no more than childish nonsense. He likes to keep his engine clean, its a clean machine. If your 6 year old child came home from school after writing that. You wouldn’t even put it on the fridge.
@: The Beatles are rated exactly as they ought to be. You may not like them and that’s OK. but if you smugly state that The Beatles are overrated and are not good at all (said with a superior air due to you not having fallen prey to such a ‘mainstream, uninteresting, common and popular opinion’ as liking The Beatles, your shortcoming is that you invariably know very little nothing about them. You maybe heard Yesterday and Yellow Submarine, and then decided to go against the majority, to be contrary because that’s just the kind of fascinating, breaking-the-mould person that they are. Haha It might seem that way if you are only able to interpret lyrics in their literal sense. Also, if my 6 year old child also created the catalogue of a world renowned, influential artist, I wouldn’t isolate one single piece of work and base my judgment solely on that. Their output was certainly not absolutely perfect. No one’s is. Not only did they change the song-writing and musical elements of pop music, they changed the recording process, the album making process, the attitude to the album itself, the concert/touring aspect, the business aspect, the relationship with the media, the concepts of celebrity and fame, the expectations of a popular, mainstream band.
@: Lyrics like the one you quoted are actually evocative and poetic rather than ‘childish nonsense’ (the same could be said of some of Bob Dylan’s output). If that’s not your kind of thing, fine, but 1960s music (especially Dylan’s) liberated us from the curse of hearing nothing but literal, straightforward lyrics. It was hugely influential and inspirational.
@Brendan O’Brien: but the thing there is the line is both literally true (firemen and their fire engines!) and at the same time evokes a whole culture. ‘clean’ is a running joke through the hard days night film. Penny lane is a good example of writing that is both literal and figurative. Hard to pick out a line from that song that doesn’t hit both levels. Excellent song, real and surreal.
