Dublin is getting a 50-foot 'Rockefeller-style' Christmas tree this year

The lights will be lit on 26 November.

CHRISTMAS MIGHT BE three months away, but the competition for Ireland’s tallest tree is already on.

At a new Dublin market due to open in two months, the focal point will be a 50-foot tree, donated by Coillte, which organisers say will ”rival Rockefeller’s”.

The “I Believe” Christmas village, launched today, runs from 26 November until 23 December in the Custom House area.

Some 230 seasonal jobs are expected to be created by the festival, which focuses on food, drink, craft and horticulture.

The two-month market will add an estimated €8.4 million to the economy and attract over 10,000 visitors every day, according to organisers.

They hope the area will also provide a space for charities to fundraise and promote their work.

‘Christmas market map’

Speaking at the launch, Lord Mayor of Dublin Críona Ní Dhálaigh called the initiative “a fantastic opportunity for us to put Dublin on the European Christmas market map”.

“Custom House Quarter is a unique venue, which is close to the city centre and extremely well-served by public transport… so I have no doubt that it will do fantastically,” she said.
