Taoiseach Enda Kenny rings the Nasdaq bell with Web Summit CEO Paddy Cosgrave last year Brian Lawless/PA Archive

Web Summit paid only €1.3 million for Lisbon move

Co-founder Paddy Cosgrave made the announcement the event was leaving Dublin today.

Updated 12.36

THE DUBLIN WEB Summit will be shifted to the Portuguese capital of Lisbon next year.

Co-founder and CEO Paddy Cosgrave said this morning that after “careful consideration” the company had decided to move the event.

The announcement comes after more than a month of speculation that organisers could shift the conference to one of several alternative locations, including Amsterdam or London.

The company would not reveal what incentives were offered as part of its final decision to move to Lisbon after whisperings that it was pushing for a better deal from state agencies to stay in Ireland, however Portuguese media reported government “investment” in the event totalled €1.3 million per year.

“We chose Lisbon because of the strong infrastructure in the city, the amazing venue and the thriving startup community,” Cosgrave said in his statement.

We want (the Web Summit) to continue to grow and for our attendees to get the best experience possible. We look forward to working with the Lisbon community – they have been incredibly welcoming.”

Five years on

The tech conference, which organisers expect to bring in 30,000 attendees this November, was launched five years ago in the Irish capital with a few hundred industry figures.

By last year it had grown to over 22,000 attendees at Dublin’s RDS Arena. Fáilte Ireland has put the value of the 2014 Web Summit to the Irish economy at €100 million.

However the event was plagued with WiFi problems and concerns were also raised about price gouging by hotels and guesthouses in the capital during the event.

Cosgrave said the Web Summit organisers would “always be grateful for the support and encouragement” they received from Dublin and the Irish authorities.

When asked what financial incentives had been provided to move the event to Lisbon, a spokesman for the Web Summit told TheJournal.ie the company would “not comment on confidential commercial agreements”.

Figures from the IDA showed the state development body spent €320,000 on both the Web Summit and F.Ounders events in Dublin between 2012 and 2014.

A spokesman said the spend was in line with that from other organisations wanting to “secure access and high-profile branding” at the events. The sums included tickets, exhibition space and other perks.

Enterprise Ireland spent about €456,000 on participation fees for the event between 2011 and 2014, and another €69,000 in costs on stands. The agency recorded €36,750 in income from last year’s event.

A spokesman said Enterprise Ireland was “delighted” to be partners with the Web Summit since its foundation and it was disappointed to hear of the move.

The Web Summit has also received “significant financial and non-financial support” from other state publicly-funded bodies including Fáilte Ireland and Dublin City Council, among others, according to a spokesman for the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.

State of the art

In a blog post further explaining the decision, Cosgrave said the new “state-of-the-art venue” in Lisbon, the MEO Arena, would have the capacity for more than 80,000 attendees next year.

A spokesman for the RDS said the Web Summit was a “great event for Dublin” and it was “regrettable” the decision had been taken to move it next year. The event’s organisers have agreed a deal to bring in a third-party WiFi provider for this year’s summit.

Cosgrave said the company remained Irish, employing 130 people in its Dublin headquarters. It has launched a number of spin-off conferences, including Collision in the US and RISE in Hong Kong.

This decision has nothing to do with infrastructure or WiFi.

It’s all about the money, money, money.

Fair play to government, they obviously wanted taxpayers money to fund the private event. Cost/benefit probably didn’t stack up. Bloody capitalists, sling yer hook. Companies want low tax regimes to set up business. This lot are event organisers, they will still funnel any profits made in other countries through here anyway.

I would have moved it too. Ireland has an illusion of innovation because we keep attracting established foreign companies here. But the reality is we do fukc all to support entrepreneurs and start-ups. If Lisbon has a better start-up community, they have more innovation and they deserve the summit.

For the last 4 years the Wifi has been awful, this is a TECHNOLOGY conference, most of the attendees are running there companies and networking while there. Despite repeated threats that if it did not improve they would leave. It didnt and they have.

This was one of the jewels in Ireland’s technology crown and its been thrown away

There are wi-fi problems at practically every technology event. It happens when there are thousands of attendees trying to connect their phones and laptops at the same time. There were issues reported at IFA and CES.

I’ve no doubt at all that there’ll be wi-fi issues in the venue in Lisbon too.

The headline has now changed to infer money was the de using factor. Nice impartial journalism there for you. The truth is they have probably been courted before by other venues in other countries. I’d be surprised if they weren’t . They hadn’t gone before and thst says they were trying to make it happen in Ireland . Too many feck ups and not much support from your country just getting ripped off was probably the straw that broke the camels back perhaps. All I know is it was in Dublin and the organisers gave fair warning they would go unless there were improvements. They wasn’t and they got a better offer and left. It’s still our loss.

Do people not understand how wifi works?

Wifi is a local connection. It is provided LOCALLY. If there are issues, it is within your power to correct it, not your ISP.

IF as, some people have suggested, it was because the venue insisted on using their own equipment, not allowing a BYO approach, then simple solution “We bring our own or we walk”.

Chris I took a look at the link the the times article provided above, seems he was recruiting those from Tinity with a 2.1 or above, and those from other Unis who had a 1.1

Cosgrave’s reasoning apparently was that grade inflation was rampant in non-Trinity colleges and that the other degrees were 3 year as opposed to 4 year courses.

I’m not sure about the truth of the claims of grade inflation, but I’m pretty sure many IT degrees in the other colleges are 4 year ones…

I was at it last year. Wi-Fi was a shambles. Someone handed me a tablet to fill out a survey, and the thing wouldn’t load, which was very embarrassing for them. While the main issue with the wi-fi would be for the exhibitors, it obviously affected the attendees too. I had a good 4G connection throughout, which was fine for me as my company are paying for it. But it wouldn’t be a viable option for visitors from abroad who would be roaming, and most tech employees need to be online even when they’re at a conference.

Also, the only way my company could afford to send me was because I didn’t have to stay in a hotel and opted to stay with a relative in Dublin instead. Hotel availability and prices were shocking. I bought my ticket months in advance, and by that time there was nothing reasonable left at all.

The market for this European and International tech companies, not just Irish ones, so there’s no loyalty from the majority of the attendees to Ireland. As sad as I am to see it leave Dublin, it makes perfect commercial sense to move it to another location which can handle the size it has become.

If they got money from EI then it would more than likely have been an investment as opposed to a “grant”. If this is the case then moving abroad could be something EI is supportive of as it may mean the value of their investment will grow. If they are keeping their offices in Ireland and employing people here then more power to them. It’s up to the RDS and Dublin in general to try and win them (and other similar events) back to Ireland in the coming years.

Lisbon is a really modern and tech city with capacity to hold this event and at significant lower prices (food, accommodation, transport) and really friendly people. Startup scene is booming there and we have one of the most brilliant engineers out there. The night life there is crazy as well it starts 00h-01h00 and ends after hours. Dublin Global Techno Hub? Really?
And please read the entire post. I am sure you will raise an eyebrow when done.
When a business that supposedly generates “100 million a year for the Irish Economy” is moving abroad either someone has been telling porkies or someone in Government has been vast asleep, or both.
Lisbon has a better infrastructure then Dublin?
Ok that I can believe, or maybe not.
But wait a minute. This does not seem to bother Google, Paypal, Twitter and Facebook who all employ a few more people then the 130 people the company behind the web summit employs.
and lets not forget the other small boys called Intel.
We all know that the RDS is a pretty small place compared to some other venues across Europe, but Lisbon.?
So why this move to Lisbon and not Berlin, Munich, Amsterdam, Paris, Madrid, or, yes and I forgot the other small village called London.
London has no decent infrastructure for this type of event?
But the truth might have more to do with $$$ then with location.
I can understand the LA and New York are a little to far away.
Ok then Lisbon it is, after all it is the best alternative to Dublin.
    Or is it?
    RDS CAPACITY : 10.596 SQ M
LISBON CONGRESS CENTER: 10.000 SQ M
    Population Lisbon 530.000
    Population Dublin 527.000
And not enough hotels in Dublin.?
Dublin had more than 3.5 MILLION overseas visitors in 2014.
One in three euro spent in Ireland by overseas visitors were spent in Dublin. and I guess it’s a little more then the 100 million generated by the Websummit
So why Lisbon? I guess we’ll never know.
As a famous Irish person one quoted.
“MEN IS LEAST HIMSELF WHEN HE TALKS IN HIS OWN PERSON. GIVE HIM A MASK AND HE WILL TELL YOU THE TRUTH.” (Oscar Wilde)

I agree. But i am wondering. I have seen so many comment here about poor wifi.

Do the likes of Google, Facebook, Paypal, Microsoft and Intel suffer from poor wifi?

Some say a loss to Ireland. Really, ‘com on and smell the coffee.
Do you know any other exhibition where they charge entrance fees of €1000+
This was always hyped up by. “You can rub shoulders with some famous people”
    And never about TECH!
Many fools feel good when they can say “I met so and so”

And then they had the audacity to get students to work for them for Free as “Volunteers”
And invite other students to get a stand at a discounted rate of just €1000.

    Focussed on, and supporting IT?
These guys have never had one second of passion for anything to do with IT other then the $$.

I run a very small software business from Ireland, and 90 of my customers are in the USA
Not one of them has ever told me. “I don’t want to buy from you because you are based in Ireland”
My customer include several US Government Departments.
And not one of them has a problem with me being based in Ireland.
Did I get any support in Ireland achieving my goals? You MUST BE JOKING RIGHT?
And, bye the way, as all my business is global via the Internet my WIFI is JUST FINE!

I guess customers like my product because I am honest, transparent and without any bullshit.
And there are of course many more companies in Ireland with similar stories.

I might not make as much money as the guys who run Websummit, but I prefer to have a proper long term reputation, then just hyping things up for the sake of a few extra $$$.

At least I can be proud of having build a successful business with a strong global reputation.
And which will be around for many years to come.
And when you can count several US Government Departments and some of the world largest corporations as your customers, well that is fine by me.

The truth is, the reason they are not going to Amsterdam is because they would look stupid there.
And likewise if this is such a great European Event then London should be a much better place to locate to then Lisbon.

Lisbon is not even on the IT map ANYWHERE!
Lisbon is great for start-ups? Don’t make me laugh!
I thought Dublin was the start-up Capital of Europe. Or has then changed now!

And Enda Kenny is only interested when he gets to rub shoulders with some famous people.
And then pretends he cares about Irish businesses.

maybe people should start focussing on re-building Ireland by producing proper products with a proper reputation.

Look at every other country on the Planet, and you will quickly find they are not successful for no reason. They focus on product and not hyped up nonsense.

If you do not entirely agree with me that is fine.

Just look some of the products you own and use everyday.
then ask yourself, “Do I LIKE this company, and do I trust them to deliver me a decent, value for money product.

You will soon agree that, yes not even you, would spend your hard earned money on hype and hot air. Unless you are a deluded fool, but I always assume people are smart.

Not very often do you hear someone other then myself say “They are all full of SH*T”

I do agree that this guy has set up a nice event and worked hard to make it a success.
But as I noticed, they very quickly got sidetracked by the $$$$$$$$ and lost the plot totally.

If it is ok for him to get rich, ok that is fine. But as I always say, if your motive is to get rich you might as well become a drug dealer. They make a lot more money!

In my opinion, Dublin – Attention to detail for events like this – 0. Taking everything for granted!
Lisbon and Portugal will hit top marks as they know how to attract and retain this and I for one am delighted that the event is going there – bravo!. An old European saying is never spit into the soup but I don’t think event organisers (RDS) or any of the crowd reaping benefits from this give a toss about that and happily spit away into the soup – someday you have to taste that very same soup folks! And today is the day.
Sadly since the “boom” and it continues today only a few get the quids in this country, the majority of people who do work hard are happy to not question or revolt against it…I mean just reading the journal and the amount of corruption and state of affairs the country is in and the arrogance the politicians have reads like a banana republic!
I am just hoping that all the contributors here do take action – so much of what is being commented is excellent – some trolling but that’s the greatness of being able to express via these forums. Ireland has the potential to be not a good country but a great country, it belongs to everyone of us who have earned our rights to be here, respecting this country is our first priority and if we don’t have people showing that respect to us (politicians, cronies etc.), we need to take action. We may criticise the Greeks but for me they represent a fighting spirit, one we as Irish have been famous for abroad but somehow have lost it or diluted it.We need more than words and more action guys and together every Irishman, woman and child can shape their future – not the future of a bunch of crooked politicians and business men.

What a disaster for Dublin the so called IT tech capitol of Europe!!!!!But I totally understand the move – for a country which has more tech and IT companies than other European countries its size, the infrastructure for people living in the country is very poor and to be honest pretty low tech. Forget Dublin and the alleged fibre optic speed bands there, people outside the pale struggle with poor telecom and internet networks, particularly those in Co. Cork! Perhaps the joke of Eircom now rebranded to Eir (how much did that cost again…?) will look at this as a sign of things to come….sorry guys but Dublin you are too expensive, offer poor quality and take things for granted. If events like this cannot be maintained, developed, showcased or the vision of those benefiting from this too short term i.e. grab the cash (Celtic Tiger Syndrome) and feck the rest! then no wonder the organiser is bailing.
I am delighted that Lisbon has grabbed this, plus the climate, the culture, food and the fabulous hospitality and great value price!!! the Portuguese capitol will bring to such an event.
