80-metre wind mast knocked over

It is unclear what exactly cause the collapse.

DSC_0011 Wind Aware Ireland Wind Aware Ireland

A METEOROLOGICAL MAST has been knocked over in Co Laois.

The structure was in place in Cullenagh Forest in the south east of the county.

The 80 metre mast, which is owned by sustainable energy company Coillte, has been irreparably damaged.

Coillte has said that it is currently investigating the matter and has informed An Garda Síochána.

The company was granted permission for an 18 turbine wind farm in the area in June of last year. However, this is currently the subject of a court appeal.

It is reported that there has been some opposition to the wind farm in the local area.

Firstly the title “80-metre wind mast knocked over” makes no sense at all and based on the article should read “80-metre meteorological mast knocked over by wind”

Secondly the “journalist” calls Coillte a “sustainable energy company” when it is a state sponsored forestry company.

I know I am helping the clickbait that the Journal desperately needs in order to pay the wages of their mostly useless journalists but this type of crap has to stop

The structure is actually a anemometer a used to define the best possible wind in a particular area. Coillte have changed in recent years to dabble in wind energy also to note coillte applied some years back to develop and run a nursing home in one of there forests in Wexford.

“Based on the article” wind was at fault you say? Where does the article say that?

Did they contact the Gardai to apprehend the wind? “Last seen travelling at 30kmph due West. Advise caution, this wind has priors and may resist arrest”.

It’s a wind mast, even though they are sometimes referred to as metmasts. They don’t have the full compliment of meteorological measurement equipment, jus an anemometer and wind vane. They are used to obtain a 12 month wind profile for the site. I seriously doubt the wind knocked it over. Lattice masts offer very little in the way of wind resistance.

Agree with you somewhat, but the main issue I have is the proximity to someone’s house that turbines can be constructed(500 metres). The rules were created when turbines were 50 to 70 metres high. A lot of proposed wind farms now contain turbines that are 170 metres high.

The Wind power ‘solution’ is touted as almost the saviour of the environmental lobbyists- this technology has its place in the ‘Generation mix’ but it’s major stumbling block is the lack of storage infrastructure to offset the inherent variable nature of wind. The wind industry needs to invest in pumped storage infrastructure for example to have a viable and credible future. Most of these Renewable technologies suffer from a common flaw – Generating capacity does not meet demand at any given time (wind supply is decoupled from electricity demand)…hence need for storage. Storage is prohibitively expensive though to build, along with its own environmental impact. Clean Nuclear Fusion is always only ’5 yrs’ away but as classical Fossil fuel technology is retired from use…relatively dirty Nuclear Fission is only viable option to fill the gap. Yeah, there’s the Solar Cells, Battery storage, compressed air storage facilities…none of these are enough to match our current electricity consumption and is NOT going to be enough to boil your kettles in the morning folks. Conventional Thermal Gas generating plant will be phased out eventually over the next 60yrs…What then?

Todd, I’ll finish your sentence for you. Wind is an excellent source of subsidy generator for the owner. As an energy generator there total pants. With that in mind, and the fact the protectors of rural Ireland Fine Gael, don’t see any issue with putting an industrial turbine 1 and a half times the height of the spire beside people’s houses, that exceed the noise levels fourfold what the WHO recommend is required to avoid environmental insomnia, you might start to realise the issues Irish people have with them.

Tod. What factual basis do you base your assertion that wind is an excellent source of energy?
The overwhelming independent evidence would suggest otherwise beyond a certain percentage on the grid. We have the 3rd highest electricity cost in EU.
Wind power is intermittent, which makes the management of electricity systems increasingly difficult if the share of wind power in total system capacity approaches or exceeds the minimum level of demand during the year (base load). It is expensive and inefficient to run other sources of power so that their output matches fluctuations in demand. This is because the backup sources achieve much lower levels of thermal efficiency, that is, the proportion of fuel that is converted into electricity, when running for extended periods as ‘spinning reserve’ than when operating all or most of the time.

The problems of intermittency could be addressed by investment in storage systems, long distance transmission or transferring electricity demand from peak to off-peak periods by adapting pricing policies. There is some research on storage options being undertaken at present, but this is not part of the current plan in Ireland. Also the proposed interconnectors to Britain and France could potentially smooth out wind availability across a large area.

However, to date, this is theoretical. There is significant risk that annual CO2 emissions could be greater by increasing wind energy in the system than by investing in combined cycle gas plants. The outcome will depend on how much wind displaces gas generation used for either base load demand, middle of the demand curve or peak demand. For example, CO2 emissions increased by 3.6% in Germany in 2012 despite having the second highest wind energy penetration in Europe.

One Irish study, ‘A Cost Benefit Analysis of Wind Power’ by Eleanor Denny, found that ‘the carbon dioxide reduction benefits of a carbon price can be completely outweighed by the added cycling costs….When a carbon price and wind generation are combined, the cycling costs are increased further,’ and ‘It was found that even with 3000MW of installed wind generation, the cycling costs can still exceed the value of the saved carbon dioxide emissions.’

Yes, Sean. The “guidelines”( meaning they are just that, not regulations), were introduced in 2006 when industrial wind turbines were 50metres high. The best international practice matrix of height of turbine to distance they can be placed to a home was 10 times the distance. So, 50m high turbine should be 500m from a home. Now, the industrial wind turbines are truly enormous, some as high as 185m ( approx 600ft). The guidelines have remained unchanged at 500m setback. This is clearly ridiculous. The massive amount of international peer reviewed reports and evidence show that these giants cause people and animals to become sick, this is called wind turbine syndrome. It’s caused by “infrasound”. Take a look at this video of a couple from Roscommon who were forced to move out of their home because a wind turbine built 700m from their home was having a devastating effect on their health. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjdUHpdFP-E …Minister Alex White is far too close to the wind industry and has been successfully lobbied by them to block the publication of new guidelines. People are very, very angry.
