A CHICAGO TV station has apologised after it used a photograph a Nazi Holocaust symbol to illustrate a news story about Yom Kippur.
WGN TV broadcast a story on Tuesday marking the beginning of the Jewish festival that’s considered the holiest in the Jewish calender.
But viewers were shocked and angry by the choice of image broadcast by WGN TV to begin the story about the Jewish day of atonement.
Introducing the package, the station used a still of the badge Jewish prisoners were forced to wear inside Nazi concentration camps.
The six-pointed star has the word ‘Jude’, written inside it. Jude is the German word for ‘Jew’.
Viewers were angry.
After the reaction from viewers the station was forced into an apology.
Poynter reported that the WGN TV expanded on their apology later saying that they are “extremely embarrassed” by their mistake:
Last night we ran a story to recognize Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement. The artwork chosen to accompany the story came from a graphics image bank. Regrettably, we failed to recognize that the image was an offensive Nazi symbol.
“We are extremely embarrassed and we deeply apologize to our viewers and to the Jewish community for this mistake. Ignorance is not an excuse. ”

I often read posts here about journal having weak stories and think what a bunch of moaners. But now seriously, journal you can’t publish an article about a ‘little known app like messenger’. Everyone uses messenger and there’s not much need for a tutorial on a news site
Always on the cutting edge of new technology eh journal? Not really.

Young persons of my acquaintance made me aware of this some time ago. However, since I’ve no interest in Facebook (or Facebook lite) the information wasn’t much use to me.
i use this in work and i also use whatsapp web which is also very good and also owned by Facebook
Being an auld one (in terms of tech) I hadn’t a clue what this was. So you’re going to get at least one thank you anyway for writing this article ;)

Firefox has an add on that disables your news feed. Very useful as the news feed had turned to crap with adverts and posts from people I don’t know and you can still post happy birthday to friends’ walls etc. Just no more stupid posts.
That would be all of them then.

Jeez I’m 68 and I’ve been using messenger to chat with almost all my acquaintances for a year now ! Little known ! Like Brennan’s Bread ! Of course you must have a Facebook account…. And real butter for the Brennan’s !
